We Need SUBWAY!

So when are we getting a SUBWAY in Accy then? Preston has a couple, Burnley has one, we need a SUBWAY!

Oh and whilst I'm on the topic, http://www.subwaymad.co.uk could do with your help by registering and debating :)

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Indeed! Subway's are great!! We have subways all over in Moscow, I've often wondered why there are so little in England.

garinda 24-04-2005 12:10

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Lol, at first l thought you meant an underground train route because you were so impresed with the one in Moscow.

Then l thought you wanted us to have an underground tunnel under a busy road, handy when you ned a pee apparently.

Now you want another chain of sandwich shops.

Thats it take the fod out of my Brother's childrens mouths. What about the poor independants? My family have been baking bread and selling sandwiches on Union Rd. for nearly 75 years. Choice of breads range from the humble teacake to Paninnis, fillings from cured ham to Chicken Bang Bang [a hot litle number.] All individually made, and if your lucky/unlucky enough to be served by my Mum a cabaret as well, as she usually has the shop in stitches with her quips. :)

Neil 24-04-2005 13:40

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

So I should stop going to the one on union road opposite Rhyddings Street then mate?
Can you arrange AccyWebbers discount for us and we might all start going. Maybe an AccyWeb poster in the window as well.

garinda 24-04-2005 14:41

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Those newbies, who buy their bread in? Pah!

325 Union Rd. is where you need to be straight across from The Royal Oak, and round the corner from Tinkerbelles dog biscuit warehouse. :)

WillowTheWhisp 24-04-2005 14:49

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

I'm fully supportive of the independant butty shop. Why should we want to be the same as everywhere else when we could be better instead? It's so boring when everywhere you go you find exactly the same shops. I used to love Carley's bakers in Church. It was on Blackburn Road but all that remains where that row of shops used to be is a green mound with an often weed filled flower bed. There was a geat baker on Ramsbottom Street Accy too, Mr. Chaffer, alas also long gone.

Mick 24-04-2005 14:52

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Well i vote the subway runs from Holland street to Persia street then over to the STAG INN at Church
there is less chance of getting knocked down then when me and Less come home hehe

We usually use the one at the bottom of Rhyddings St at the fire station but I will give your mums place a try this week garinda and check out their culinary expertise.

I hope they do a nice dog biscuit in meaty gravy :D ?

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

We have plenty of butty shops in this area, some of which are excellent. Subway have branches all over New Zealand, and although they are not bad I feel that they have no character. They are the McDonalds of butty shops, and you all know how I feel about McD's I can't stand them.:D We are overrun with pound shops and charity shops, the last thing we need is to be bombarded with mediocre butty shops which will drive our excellent small bakeries and shops out of business and further reduce the town of any character.

PurpleLass 24-04-2005 16:01

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Don't think we need a Subway but I do think that most sandwich shops need to be a bit more adventurous. I like crusty bread but most sandwich shops only stock those round doughy things that sort of pass for a bread roll. Choices of menu tend to be prawn, chicken, beef, ham or cheese with or without salad. Faced with this sort of choice I usually prefer to make my own.

Roy 24-04-2005 16:14

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Exactly purplelass, the local shops need to buck there ideas up or they will be pushed out of favour by places like subway.. I think subway offer a choice of 6 different types of bread and tons of fillings, all nicely prepared before your very eyes. Oh yeah, and subways usually have an eaty in bit.. The world changes and so does your need for a decent butty shop, cheese and tomato no longer cut it alone!

lindsay ormerod 24-04-2005 17:50

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Pre packed sarnies are rubbish!I much prefer to get mine freshly made.Choice in the town centre ain't great,Greggs and Oddies are rubbish and not good value for money. The one opposite Yorkshire Bank is good but the best has to be the one at bottom of Warner St,not sure of name but it's great!

PurpleLass 24-04-2005 17:57

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Are you talking about SOUP?

garinda 24-04-2005 18:45

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

True the days of limp cheese and tomato are long gone.

l'm not sure exactly as l just eat left overs, but there is at least seven types of bread with speciality breads featured as well. l love the ciabatta, and the hot panninis are heavenly. Be prepared to wait at lunchtime as each sandwich is made to order and people are usually lined up outside.

There is no where to eat in, we did used to have a cafe next door in the 70's but Ossy wasn't ready for it, a bit like the Gobbinlander disco we had on the corner of the same block.

I did used to go into Subway in Glasgow, but like Lettie said it's the sandwich equivalent of Macdonalds and every high street in the world will soon look the same.

Sparkologist 24-04-2005 19:00

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Accy needs a Subway like a fish needs a bicycle!

Garinda, you say your family shop had a cafe on the side, in the 70's. I cannot rember this. Please refresh my memory. On the top side of the shop was a small clothes shop that was run by Stan & May Corbett and below, on the library side, was a small shop that sold flowers & trinketts, but I cannot picture the cafe; unless it was very early 70's.

garinda 24-04-2005 19:06

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Sparky you were only a babbi then, lol.

The cafe was next door where the flower shop was until recently and was open from 1970-74. We recently sold it and it's been empty since July and we are told they are going to open it as a computer/phone shop.

The disco was on the corner facing the site of the old Co-op and is now flats.

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

maybe if the council put a limit on how many kebab shops accy needs there would be room for a subway :)

maybe getting rid of mcdonals and replacing it with a subway would be a better idea

not saying subway food is health food but i bet its %500 healthier than mcdonalds

Margaret Pilkington 24-04-2005 20:24

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Subways are Ok...... but nothing spectacular........the onlt real thing that I like about their sandwiches is they don't use butter or marge.......but if you go into one of the local sandwich shops that make to order then you can ask them to leave the bread bare.....and hold the mayo. Use your local sandwich maker or lose them.

WillowTheWhisp 24-04-2005 21:28

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Shops will sell cheese and tomato as long as there is demand for cheese and tomato. It's up to customers to ask if they have anything more interesting and if they are asked often enough then they'll get the message.

The one opposite the Warner St end of the arcade isn't bad but last week we got butties there and were very disappointed. I'm just trying to remember what they were and can't which probably shows how tasteless they were. The last time we went there we were very pleased which was why we went back. Obviously it varies.

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

dont knock them until you tried them guys

their food is more scummy and definatly more hygenic than the sess pits along blackburn road

i went to subways in bolton on my birthday inbetween pubs and didnt wake up the next day with that ive just eaten a dead cat taste in my mouth

ime sure they wont effect local trade as during the day people will stick to their local butty shop but on a night out the local shops are shut and subways would be a refreshing change from double dog burger and chips or cat tika

When I travel, I look for somehting other than what I can easily get at home. I'll pass on eating at Subways in the UK. :p

And to think that I thought that a UK "subway" allowed me to cross under Oxford Circus in London!

don't agree much with subway, nowt against them, but what accy needs is PROPER shops,we have too much of the same type, hardly any individual or specialist type of shop.used to have in days gone by.

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

What are pretend bacon and sausage like?

lettie 26-04-2005 15:22

Re: We Need SUBWAY!

Pretend bacon and sausages are the kind of rubbish that all these food chains seem to sell. The product looks vaguely like bacon and sausage but do not be deceived. It's highly doubtful that this kind of product has ever been near a pig let alone part of one. It's all of the leftovers swept up off the abbatoir floor, mixed with a few colourings and flavourings and made into a bacon or sausage type shape....Honest.....;)

The bakers shop on the other side of the road next to the little car-park just below the Rose & Crown is far better.

Leftovers? I've always been of the opinion that sausage was already made of those leftovers. All the odd bits of meat and fat, ground and spiced to disguise the origins (of course, pork fat is a great and traditional medium for bringing out the flavor of spices).

I had pictured pretend sausage as being made of, say, soy protein. Yuck is still the operative word. Someone decided to fashion an imitation of our traditonal American hot dogs our of (mostly) soy protein. Yuck! I could easily agree with the name they gave it, which should serve to warn anyone off this vile product - "Not Dogs!" Unintentional truth in advertising!;)

Lol, fair enough it's a free market economy [until there are only five major chains covering the whole world.]

The Bread Basket is run independently by a very nice couple called the Grahams.

I find their bread a bit too doughy and floury to my taste, but l'm biased. :)
