Eastgate

Hi, did you know that at last, the CBS building on Eastgate, has been purchased?
HOME AND BARGAINS are moving into it. Nice one!
Dont know just when, but there is a sign in the window advertising for some staff.

Re: Eastgate

Does that mean we'll have an empty shop on Broadway? :(

Atarah 01-05-2005 23:23

Eastgate

Not sure, but .. surely Accrington's not big enough for the two.

Re: Eastgate

So that would seem to suggest that this is where the Bus Station is going. Farewell Integrated Transport.

Re: Eastgate

If Home and bargain are moving to the retail park, who's for betting that we get yet another charity or pound type shop on Broadway.:D

Re: Eastgate

Nah,it'll be another phone shop or card shop! Birthdays is moving into the old Our Price unit in the Arndale so that will only give us 3 huge card shops within spitting distance of each other! Also O2 are recruiting for staff in Accy!

Re: Eastgate

Looks like a good one for the bookies

1. Pound Shop
2. Card Shop
3. Phone Shop
4. Useful Shop
5. Charity Shop

Re: Eastgate

Ditto!

I heard a rumour that Argos were also thinking of moving up there as well.

I think that would be better for Argos to move up to the retail park, the shop on Blackburn Road is just too small for the custom that they get especially around Christmas and parking is dreadful around there.

Sorry I forgot, added it now :D

Re: Eastgate

I'm sure Home and Bargain won't get the same 'passing trade' when they move up there......and it is a bit of a trek if you don't have transport.
They could certainly do with larger premises but surely there is somewhere more central.

Eastgate

Went into my favourite store today and asked about the new store. WE ARE TO HAVE TWO HOME AND BARGAINs, the shop on Broadway is to STAY, plus the new superstore on Eastgate! Supposed to be opening first week in June.
Cant be bad!

Atarah 04-05-2005 15:32

shopping in Accrington

If you could choose a new shop/store for Accrington, which would YOU choose.

I would choose ..... DEBENHAMS

cashman 04-05-2005 15:37

Re: Eastgate

anything would do me just not the repetitive dross we usually get.

lindsay ormerod 04-05-2005 15:42

Re: Eastgate

A Debenhams would last about a month in Accy before it either went bust or was emptied by the thieving scum of the town.I personally would like a TK Maxx/H&M or Primark.

Tealeaf 04-05-2005 16:27

Re: Eastgate

If there is one shop we need in Accy, it is a decent independent bookshop, or failing that a Waterstones or a Books etc. The presence of good bookshops in any town is the finest indicator of the intellectual capital and the civil gravitas of its population. The absence of such an establishment in Accy speaks volumes (excuse the pun) for the present-day state of our town. No books, but lots of tat knocked out at a quid. Quite simply, a disgrace.

lindsay ormerod 04-05-2005 17:52

Re: Eastgate

You hit the nail on the head there Tea;there is no good bookshop in Accrington because the majority of the population would not use it!It's a sad fact of life here;even the Library is nowhere as busy as it was and has now converted book shelf space into a "reading zone".That's probably to disguise the amount of books that have "wandered off"!:(

PurpleLass 04-05-2005 19:18

Re: Eastgate

There used to be a really good bookshop but it wasn't used enough so decided to bail out. I agree I would love a good bookshop, I can spend literally hours in Waterstone's in Manchester when I go over there. We just need someone with a bit of vision to open something like the cafe/bookshops or internet/bookshops like they have in other places.

grego 04-05-2005 21:06

Re: Eastgate

I agree a good book shop would be great, hate to say it but I dont shop in Accy very much anymore unless I only want a card, paper or cheap bit of tat, there are some decent shops but I dont think it'll be long before they've gone. Recently tried buying all fresh fruit & veg from the market etc but it didn't keep long enough and wasn't good quality overall also more expensive.

WillowTheWhisp 04-05-2005 22:21

Re: Eastgate

I really used to like Wardleworths when we had it and not just for books but they were great for stationery and artist equipment too. Of course my favourite thing about the shop was the fact that if they didn't have what you wanted they would order it for you. If it was in print - Wardleworths would get it for you. Sad reflection upon the state of things these days that such shops are now so few and far between.

I also wouldn't object to a PC World in town.

chav1 04-05-2005 23:04

Re: Eastgate

we dont need a book shop when amazon is so much cheaper

sorry but unless a shop can match internet prices they are buggered brfore they open the doors

we could however do with a toys R us

at my kids birthdays and xmas i always have to go out of town because woolworths has limited toy stock and agros never has anything in stock or fails to deliver what you order

i would object strongly

their pcs are made from the cheapest inferior parts available ( motherboards are the biggest joke simply upgrading the motherboard can greatly increase pc speed and stability)

repair center is more likely to break your pc rather than fix it ( their idea of a repair precoedure is to set your pc to factory settings)

disgustingly over priced - once needed a power connector on a bank holiday and was charged £8 for an item sold for £1 in most pc shops ( i needed it urgent or wouldnt have paid that amount)

honest willow the next time you need somthing for your pc check out alternatives like scan.co.uk and dabs.co.uk

a lot cheaper , a better choice of brands and scan will even build you a pc to your specifications

i swear i once saw one of pc worlds technicians about to clean out a pci slot using a metal screwdriver with the pc running but was stopped by his co-worker

kinda ruined my fun coz i wanted to see it go boom and watch them explain what they had done to the poor customer who was watching lol

edit:

yup i got a bee up my ass about pc world they take advanyage of average joe who dosnt have pc knowledge and put their prices accordingly

if you were to buy a £300 graphics card from pc world they will offer to install it for you for £15 ( the last time i checked its probably a lot more now)

£15 gets you 2 case screws removed , 1 screw holding the grapghics card , insertion of the grapghics card and the putting back of the 3 fore mentiond screws

what a bargain £15 for 5 mins work

just my opinion of course i dont want sueing for slander lol

Re: Eastgate

I bought my pc from pc world two years ago, and have not had any problems with it. So i can't complain.

WillowTheWhisp 05-05-2005 13:35

Re: Eastgate

I don't buy hardware there chav. It's for paper and labels and stuff like that.

I love the blank look on some of their faces when you ask them something complicated. ;)

chav1 05-05-2005 15:37

Re: Eastgate

100 sheets of 80 gram a4 paper at poundland
a4 and standard size photo paper at poundland
10 blank cdrs 80min £1.00 at pondland

pc cellular on blackburn road

range of 120g gloss and mat A4 papers
A4 transfer paper for printing pictures to clothing/t-shirts
2 packs of A4 80gram paper for £5

all cheaper than pc world as far as i know

pc cellular also have a large range of cdr and dvdr media all cheaper than pc world and very good qulaity although the real cheap stuff is slightly below par but you get what you pay for

also consider the petrol cost in getting to pc world at the moment

i think the works nextto home and bargain has a selection of labels ive never realy needed lables so not sure where to get them but i bet i can find a cheaper place for them too lol

that cheap shop across from scope has recently strocked up on labels and printing paper etc it may be worth a look in there sometime as well

you mean like asking them the correct time :rofl38:

Re: Eastgate

For me itt would have to be a decent bookshop, Bodyshop or a much bigger Boots then we've got now.

Re: Eastgate

I really miss Wardleworths........they were excellent if you wanted text books or anything like that.
Seed and Gabbutts in Blackburn was another good shop for both books and artists supplies.......but that went the same way as Wardleworths.

It is Ok getting something off Amazon......but sometimes you need to look at the book to decide whether it is what you really want. I could spend hours in those two shops.

I'm glad that we aren't losing H&B from broadway though.
