Crazy Frog leaps to chart success

The Crazy Frog ringtone went straight to number one in the charts yesterday, dashing Coldplay's hopes of securing the top spot.

The new version of Axel F - the theme to the Beverly Hills Cop films - becomes the first mobile ringtone to make it as a chart single.

The novel tune, mixed by German band Bass Bumpers, outsold Coldplay's new release, Speed of Sound, to knock the Oasis hit Lyla off the top spot.

The latest offering from the Manchester band fell five places to number six.

Coldplay, came in as runners up behind Crazy Frog, securing the second chart spot, while hip-hop act Akon fell one place to number three.

Experts believe a massive marketing campaign over recent months may be the reason behind Crazy Frog's success.

HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said the popularity of the famously annoying tune was down to "its huge novelty appeal and the massive amount of exposure it is getting".

"Kids obviously find it cute and cool but students and office workers seem to be drawn to its rather kitsch, ironic appeal," he added.

Meanwhile, academics at the University of Birmingham believe the success of the single could be related to a growing trend for teenagers to spend more money on mobile phones and computers than music.

My 2 year old daughter loves it as well - if the sound is down on the telly and she is in the other room, you can hear a squeal of delight and a sudden appearance, as she rushes in to watch.

We had to buy the cd, and both the children watch the video again and again!

I might just have to get out the 7" vinyl of the original some time!

Not that we need the evidence but this ‘frog’ tune shows just how gullible and susceptible to skilled marketing the public is.

As far as pop tunes are concerned it has been that way ever since the Beatles got to number one BEFORE the record was actually released or was that escaped.

Annoying? No not really it is too catchy for that but then I only hear it in the TV ads and I have total control of the remote and rarely if ever actually see an ad. But I can understand how hearing the ‘frog’ for the umpteenth time and from all quarters it could drive a person to ………. Well you put your own destination in here.

With a bit of luck we might be able to get it to Kermit suicide.

just goes to show how a small idea can lead to millions

i say good luck to these kids that thought of it and i hope they enjoy the millions they make

money from ringtones and a chart hit are a pretty good acheivement even if they got the idea from making a daft noise to take the mick out of their friends moped lol

I still remember the original web page. It was just a picture of Shumachers F1 car with the Ding ding ding soundtrack.

I am interested to know how they managed that. The chart used to be just on record sales.

Re: Crazy Frog? Help!

Apparently (my dad told me this, being an avid Beatles fan) one of the Beatles albums sold so well that a track actually made it into the singles charts.

Don't know how that one worked, but then I wasn't around then...

Perhaps someone else knows?
