Holidays

Well, I've decided I need cheering up and what best to do that but have a good natter about sun, sea and sand.
I'm off to Bulgaria in August and I can't wait.
Anyone else going away? If so where, when and why?
If I'm allowed to ask

Re: Holidays

Already been. Just come back from honeymoon in Tunisia and gradually posting piccies in the piccies forum. The girls and I will be having our annual jaunt to Carnforth during the school hols but can't guarantee sun there and although there's sea there certainly isn't sand.

We will be going back to the Gambia in October armed with school supplies for a local school that we have 'adopted'.

Hoping also to take donated money to enable headmaster to buy desks, blackboards etc.

If anyone wishes to donate a small sum of money we would be most grateful.

I'm off on my holidays at the end of June.. A little town called Accrington in the North West of England, I doubt you'll have heard of it... Very little chance of sun, sea or sand though :(

Re: Holidays

I am desperate for another holiday. Before anybody comments New Zealand was an adventure not a holiday. In my mind a holiday includes dossing on a sunbed on the beach and reading a good novel whilst sipping a cheap cocktail...:D

I have a week off at the end of July and aim to go to a small Greek Island, haven't decided which one yet but preferably one with no airport as yobs don't bother going to those. I hope that Sparky will be able to come with me but if not, I will go anyway....:)

Re: Holidays

I've just come back from Malta, where I go twice a year. It was very hot but, being a small island, there is usually a nice breeze. I love Malta, the place and the people, and will be back there in October when it's not so roasting but the sea's still warm.

Lettie, I recommend Zakynthos for your Greek Island. It is relatively unspoilt and has beautiful beaches where turtles lay their eggs. I've been to Crete and Corfu, both very nice, but Zakynthos was better.

Re: Holidays

:couchplus well this is as far as I'm getting this year :( . Just spent all my money refurbishing the whole house so skint now!! My 2 lads are not missing out though the eldest is actually getting 3 hols this year. He went to France with the school, both lads are going with their dad to Turkey in 6 weeks (I'm dreading it as it's longest they've been away from me and they're 12 & 13yrs old!) and then end of August they go away for a week with my parents. But if I save really hard maybe just maybe I might get somewhere with kids during Oct half term. But those that are going somewhere, ENJOY!!! but think of me back in sunny England :engsmil:

I can recommend Symi. You have to get a plane to Rhodes then catch the ferry across to Symi. It's absolutely stunning. If you do decide to go try and schedule it so that you get the evening ferry across. The sight of the harbour with all the lights on at that time of day is really beautiful.

I've just returned from two weeks in Skiathos and that's also very nice - 3rd time we've been. It's the smallest of the islands that has an airport so it's not too over run. Some fantastic beaches and the main town is very stylish. Although I would recommend that you visit sooner rather than later as they've just allowed a McDonald's to be built which is possibly a sign of things to come.

I have been looking at Symi as I prefer to go to a smaller place, especially if I end up going alone. Went to a tiny island called Agistri a few years ago. A 3 hour ferry from Athens it was well worth the journey. The tiny island of Ithaca next to Kefalonia is also beautiful. I am looking to go to an island that I haven't been to before. So far I have to choose between Symi, Santorini, Aegina, Skiathos/Skopelos. They all look lovely as does the Pelion Penninsula on the mainland. I might just about make my mind up before July.:D

Re: Holidays

We went to Kefalonia from Zakynthos and that's a lovely island too. Didn't get as far as Ithaca, though.

Incidentally, in Zakynthos town we saw a man dressed in a battered top hat, wet suit, flippers, wooly mittens and with a pink umbrella stuffed into his belt. The owner of the café where we were sitting said, "He's crazy. He always looks like that".

Almost beats the man I've seen several times walking through Valletta, Malta, with a ferret on a collar and lead.

Re: Holidays

Good grief - what lucky people! We shall be coming to Ossy for two weeks, last week of August, first week of September - exotic, eh? Having a second home is great (particularly in Ossy) but it does mean (a) that you have to use it and (b) you spend so much on it that there's little left for holidays. I do miss going abroad, but it's worth it. Roll on retirement, then I can spend as much time as I like in Ossy and still go abroad on holiday.

Going with Mez to Amsterdam, though, have already bought a guide book!

Re: Holidays

If anyone does end up choosing Symi, say hello to Mary and Mikhali for me - old friends. They own half the island now so you'll find them quite easily. They started off with one bar but now they've got half a dozen and one night club. Mary is English and the sister of a good friend, she's been in Symi for about 20 years now.

I've been to Symi on my own and to Kos on my own too and Symi is definitely safer. Sorry, it sounds like I'm on commission, I'm not, I just think you'd like it.

We've already decided where we're going next year - Croatia. I've heard such brilliant things about it. I went there about 20 years ago when it was Yugoslavia and it was good then. Has anyone else been?

I haven't been yet, but I rang Balkan Holidays a couple of years ago to try to book there on my own. They wouldn't let me book and said that they didn't recommend a singleton going there. When I enquired as to the safety of the place they said that it was perfectly safe. After further enquiries I managed to elicit that they didn't want single people going alone because they don't charge single supplement and make more money selling to holidays to 2 people or more.

Needless to say I was fuming and gave the sales person a bit of an earbashing, something along the lines of when their new online booking facility is up and running, her job will be obsolete...:D I would still love to go, it looks beautiful.
