Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Anyone seen the new Racial and Religious Hatred Bill?
If this goes through, it will be a crime to speak ill of any religion, including Satanists and those African cults that believe in abusing children (members of which were recently convicted of child cruelty). It will be no defence to have good reason to make such remarks. The fact that they are true is also no defence. What price freedom? - except for lunatics and sadists. |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
This is the most ridiculous thing the PC brigade have come up with yet. Don't they even realise that just making it illegal to voice an opinion doesn't stop people having those opinions anyway? Re-education is what's needed.
All this sort of thing does is cause more racial hatred and resentment. |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
It looks like I will be getting in a lot of trouble then.
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
I wonder if the legislation will be applied to all sectors and all so-called minorities.
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
If it applies it should apply to ALL never mind just minorities. Will that mean we can have Christmas back?
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
I can see a lot of people locked up the next time Jehovahs witnesses or Mormons do the rounds. Can the PC not introdue a bill to stop the door knockers who always seem to appear when your in the middle of something & insist on you giving them 5 minutes of your time. And before I am reported for religious hatred I have nothing against them I'd just prefer it if they didn't knock on my door.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
This Bill will not generate tolerance.
Many of the things that are perceived as being offensive to other religions do not cause offence at all........so will they put the cross back in the crematorium........and the Bibles back in patients lockers.......? |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
i wonder if they will arrest that muslim cleric that preeches in the street that christians are beneath dogs and our children should be slaughtered
forget his name guy with hooks for hands no no no not captain hook lol |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
What a load of rubbish, freedom of speech is a lost cause unless you are saying what the pc brigade want to hear. This in my opinion will cause a greater amount of racial tension.

I can't speak for the Jehovah's Witnesses but I'm a Mormon (or to give us the proper name - a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) and have been a missionary so know how they ought to behave. It is preferred for them to approach people who actually express an interest in knowing about the chuch and they'd much rather do that than go from door to door but when they have no actual "referrals" they do call on people unannounced. If you politely tell them that you aren't interested and ask them to leave then that is exactly what they should do. The young missionaries (lads of 19 -21 and young women a little older) do 2 years voluntary missionary service, usually something they have saved up to fund throughout their childhood. Older couples who are retired do serve as missionaries too but they usually work within the church organisation in temples or something. None of them should ever make nuisances of themselves and if they do it is very much frowned upon. Having said that I do know that some can be over-keen and so enthusiastic that they can't understand why people don't want to hear what they've got to say. Years ago I had some Jehovah's Witnesses call here and I invited them in to discuss what they wanted to talk about. One of them actually ended up leaving here with a copy of the Book of Mormon - maybe that's why I haven't seen them since. :D A JW friend of mine once invited me round to their church, possibly thinking that I wouldn't go but I did because I'm a curious sort of person and I found it quite fascinating. It's interesting to learn about different things even if we don't totally agree with them. It will be a great shame if this bill frightens people off from each other or from discussing each other's religions for fear of breaking the law if we express disagreement. I can disagree with what people believe in but still respect their choice to believe it. |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
[QUOTE=Roy]No, do you have a link top it somewhere? How will this affect things like internet message boards?
I think it will impede on the right to self expression and undoubtedly result in a modification in how we all address these issues. I would think that the Moderators will need to be a more politically motivated in ensuring that members don’t bring the site into disrepute, I think the bill would require us to do a little house cleaning in respect of what we may have previously written in regard to this matter. I am not suggesting that we should wipe out any trace of racial, cultural or religious discussion on the site, but for the sake of common sense we should take steps to ensure that the site and ourselves are protected from those pillocks who will be looking in all the nooks and crannies for someone or something to have a go at. In the mean time I look forward for the first Christian Challenge under the Bill and how the Government responds. |
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Interesting. I wonder how this will affect political discussion in Northern Ireland?

It seems that slowly but surely the powers that be are eroding our freedoms. Will there come a time when a group of more than 3 people meeting is seen as a conspiracy???? If so, our Accyweb meetings will have to stop:eek: ;)
Seriously though, there is a big difference between saying to someone "I don't agree with certain aspects of your religion." and inciting religious hatred. It will be interesting to see just where the law will draw the line. |

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Lettie hit the nail on the head. It's supposed to be there to prevent people inciting others to racial/religious hatred. Simply disagreeing with what others believe isn't inciting hatred. It will indeed be very interesting to see where the lines are drawn.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Anyone who voted for a left wing party can have nothing to whinge about, it's always the same if you're a minority you're ok, my view is religion of any kind should be banned then we're all the same but then again I'm sure the PC brigade would find something else to move on to.

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
 I personally would do a stint in prison before I was gagged for voicing an opinion.
I was brought up to believe I lived in a country with freedom of speech and expression and will exercise it at every given opportunity, bloody do-gooders! From experience ethnic minorities give as good as they get if not better! I wonder next time I ask one of our asian friends to stop holding up traffic on Willows Lane while they sit double parked talking in their cars and get the usual 'f*** off you white b****' insult, if I ring the police will they be done for a race hate crime? Some how I doubt it I will probably be asked by the police to find an alternative route round them!! |

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Does this bill contravene my human rights........? According to article 10 it is my human right to have 'freedom of expression'.
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
The idea behind the bill is to prevent religious intollerance ( such as the anti-semitism shown by the destruction of Jewish graves) and was originally only supposed to be an offence to incite people to religious hatred. It will be interesting to see where the line is drawn because it's difficult to define. Simply disagreeing with another's point of view shouldn't be against the law.
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Willow... this bill is long on words but very short on definitions, and I think that will be its failing......it is just too open to interpretation.
|
Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
I'm an atheist, am I covered by this bill or am I exempt on the grounds that I do not suffer any religion with anything but contempt?

Re: Another nail in the coffin of freedom of speech
Dave allan wouldn't be turning cos nothing he said or did would have been covered by this law. A dave allan sketch/joke wasn't/isn't meant to incite racial or religious hatred. Not liking a race or religion isn't the same as hating them. You speak of definitions, the border of where the law comes in will be a grey area, that area will be decided by government in each case as I understand it, but most things said will obviously not be meant to incite hatred. Abuse to you tink is just abuse, give some back. But start saying you should all be burned at a stake for being black and that’s definitely gone over the line and is what the bill is designed to stop; Hatred that most of you wouldn't find acceptable in our society. This bill will not deal with petty complaints of racism, it's meant to deal with terrorist groups, or groups that started the race riots, I really can't see the government letting the strength and seriousness of this law being watered down by dealing with petty crimes with it.
