The fencing it right outside my shop. It feels like we are ina prison camp - it took them about 5 hours to get the fences up though, so I don't see the work being finished anytime soon! |
Re: work has started
Like I said in another post.....I heard a man from the Council telling the Manageress of the heart foundation shop that they would have it completed by Christmas......!

Good grief! Broadway looks like a no-go area.
Great photis Mick. What were you doing up at that time of the morning? |

Re: work has started
Thanks for the Pics Mick, you are an example to us all.
I had to laugh at the pic labelled 3.jpg. Can anyone tell me what is the point of putting a traffic sign at the top of Cornhill to inform drivers that Broadway is a Pedestrian Zone. I would have thought that if they had taken the time and trouble to drive all the way down Broadway to get into Cornhill in the first place that they would aleady be perfectly well aware that Broadway was a Pedestrian Zone. I had a look along Blackburn Road from the end of Church Street on Sunday morning and was amazed at the number of traffic signs. It's a wonder there aren't more accidents caused by drivers being too distracted to be able to look where they are going. This is one of the main reasons that HBC is short of cash. Rather than spend on things that are really necessary they throw it at road signage and putting numbers on every piece of street furniture in sight. |
Re: work has started
Nice Photos Mick. I know this about Broadway, but have people seen the amount of Rose Bay Willow Herb growing on the top of the Market Hall and quite a few other buildings around the area. This can only be causing further damage to the stone work.
|
Re: work has started
Did you see the smiling picture of PB in the Lancs Eve Tel? It's clearly ALL his idea....lol
|
Re: work has started
What is? The Rose Bay Willow Herb? :D
(sorry... heehee) |
Re: work has started
It’s vigorous and will grow anywhere the seeds settle. The seeds are the nice fluffy things you see floating around on the breeze. It loves Railways and disturbed sites. You will remember it has the bloody stuff that boarders the allotments in summer and get everywhere. Long straight green stems with a perfusion of nice pick flowers and s*** loads of fluffy seeds.

Re: work has started

|
Re: work has started
It didn't look like they'd got very far when I was down there yesterday.
|
Re: work has started
Well i just got back from town and i can't say i saw any workers
|
Re: work has started
Sorry but do we yet know what they are trying to do, if anything?
|
Re: work has started
"Various materials" flowers and benches just about sums it up. Don't ask me what "various materilas" means because I haven't a clue. That was HBC-speak.
|
Re: work has started
Dog dirt, Crisp packets, these are all various materials. :)

Re: work has started
I've seen more working in a Beechams Pill.......they are as slow as a Gods Horse.
Went down this am.......two fellas leaning on shovels having a fag......that's a job and a half. |
Re: work has started
What's a "God's horse"? That's an expression I've never heard before.
|
Re: work has started
Willow.......i don't know.......it is something my Grandma used to say if I was being very slow with something.......I never ever thought to ask her at the time........maybe somone on here will know.
Oh and the work being done is supposed to have a winding pathway of 'speckled'stones. |

Re: work has started
Apparently there are also "four or more poplar type trees" involved in it somewhere.
Four or more? Would that be five or twenty seven or three humdred and sixty one? |
Re: work has started
We [the barricaded retailers] have been told it involves totally resurfacing Broadway;provision of new lamp post, benches, planters, bins etc. It is scheduled to be finished by October.Stainless steel was mentioned for some of the street furniture.
To be honest we have seen very little progress;due to the fact that there only appears to be 2 blokes on "the job" . And once again our takings have plummetted because no-one can actually get past our store and that of Poundland.I am grateful that they are doing our stretch first,at least it's Accy hols and traditionally quiet anyway! Will see what happens when they do the bit upto the front of the store;that is supposed to be done outside trading hours.... hmmm.;) |
Re: work has started
Why not ask HBC for some "compen" for the loss of takings over the period of the contract:)
|
Re: work has started
Will be watching the figures very carefully over the next few weeks and photos are off to head office tomorrow! We were told there would be a thoroughfare thru from the Arndale entrance to our side of Broadway but that doesn't seem to have happened! Grrr.
|
Re: work has started
They'll be meaning that part where the army were parked the other day.
|
Re: work has started
It’s been two or three weeks since work started on Broadway. I did some shopping this afternoon and I can’t say much work as been done since the start. Have I missed something or is it a case that only a few slabs and a few inches of tarmac as been shifted? I did notice some edging going down but come on, you’d think that they’d carry out an archaeological survey its been that slow?
|
Re: work has started
Apparently the ground is too soft and they need to reinforce it with concrete before they start laying flags/stones/whatever down. They didn't anticipate for this, so work is going to go on for longer than expected. Retailers affected by the railings and the ones at the opposite side are going to be asked to close for one Sunday so that they can do the work upto the doors.
All good fun and games. |
Re: work has started
Quote:
Thought trial holes had been dug to establish the nature of the ground before work started. |
Re: work has started
Why am I not surprised?
|
Re: work has started
Are the retailers who are going to have to close for a day going to be compensated for their lost trade on that day???????
|
Re: work has started
I don't know Lettie. At the moment we have absolutley no plans to shut up shop for a day as we were promised that it wouldn't interfere, and that this work would be done out of hours. I'll keep you posted on what HBC have to say.
|
Re: work has started
When I passed the other day the conractors were breaking up a concrete base and were struggling every few inches to cut through steel reinforcing bars. Is this so that they can replace them with the new ones to make the ground even harder. I bet this will make a large hole in the alloted £250,000. The mind boggles.

Re: work has started
Three years ago? 2002?
Two weeks ago I had to wait up Colditz alley outside Lindsay's shop, [l did call in to say hi, but it was your day off.] In the half hour l was waiting l watched three men in their van trying to work a massive inbuilt tea urn/boiler thingy. I do so hope they've managed to make their tea, from the progress l saw this week l'm not too hopeful. I too read of stainless steel being mentioned in the design of things!?? Let's just hope that whoever at the council, who is in charge of awarding the contracts, has this time stipulated that after the finished work has been allowed to settle, any defects will be rectified as part of the job, unlike the appalling paving that was done the last time work was done on Britcliffe Way. |
Re: work has started
They didn't anticipate that the ground was too soft???? With the amount of digging up and demolition that has taken place on broadway in the last fifty years you would imagine that there would be ream upon ream of geological surveys in the planning department. Or is rather that they are too stupid and too bone idle to consult them? Or is this just another standard excuse handed out by contractors who find that they have bitten off more than they can chew?

Re: work has started
There is something funny in the figures too. in the spring when the Idiot-in-Chief proposed the scheme he said, on several occaisions, that HBC could only scrape together £250,000 for it. Last week in the Observer (page 24) the figures were quoted as £25,000 plus a further £10,000 from Lancashire Local's Innovation Fund, for the benches. Apparently the Rotary Club is also coughing up £10,000 for yet more bl**dy mosaics.
Correct me if I am wrong, but there is a hell of a difference between £250,000 and £45,000. Compared with what other boroughs in East Lancs are spending I had thought that we were being given the shi**y end of the stick with a mere £250K for Broadway. Now it seems we are not even getting that much! What is going on??????? |
Re: work has started
by the time all the c0ckups and money is sorted out we will end up with one of these at each corner of broadway and think our selves lucky we got this much lol

Re: work has started
Ground too soft? Too soft for what? What the heck are they planning to do? It used to be a main road down there not to mention a bus route. It seemed fairly solid then, apart of course from the fact that there's a river under there somewhere. Do they know that I wonder?
|
Re: work has started
Am  Pixie is posting saying the ground is to soft, Fireman is posting saying the contractors are breaking up a concrete base with steel reinforcing bars.
Are we all talking about the same site - the broadway project |

anyway work suddenly stopped and all of them went over to look at what had happened and a few of them started coveringtheir noses with their T-Shirts maybe they dug a little too deep and hit the river stink lol |

Broadway- The Venice of the North.
Stinking, sinking fast and full of s**t. Hopefully not. Perhaps we could have gondolas instead of stainless steel benches to sit on? |

Re: work has started
Well I just thought I would resurect this thread.. Yesterday I walked along Broadway. It's half finished and it'only been under way since July. The one thing that stands out in the refurbishment, is the fact that even though the project is only half finished, the buff coloured flags they have laid already are stained, stuck with chewing gum and look very scruffy. Definayely a good choice of colour HBC. Do you ever consider the future of this town, How is Broadway going to look in another 4 months.
|
Re: work has started
And the black tarmac doesn't really convey the sophisticated look we were led to believe was what they wanted.......and when Sandra Hayes has finished getting Ossy in order......could she please organise a litter pick up round Broadway and the market.....? It is pig hole.
|
Re: work has started
I agree it would have been better turfed ...........
|
Re: work has started
Or better still a fast flowing river along Broadway witha long tunnel at each end that no one knows its outlet. That would sort out some of the plonkers who wish to turn our town into a pig sty at night (can I say PIG)
|
Re: work has started
There is someone in HBC who must care this cannot go on like this its a disgrace
:o |
Re: work has started
They seem to leap from one disaster to the next without a thought for us people who have to love with their blunders.
