Members in print.
For the second week in a row, we have another Accrington Web member's letter published on the letters page of the Accrington Observer. Well done Margaret Pilkington for saying what a lot of us think about the Mr. Angry column. Let's hope the next time we see you in print is when you win the writing competition you mentioned in your blog that you may enter.
I've only ever written to the paper once, again the Observer, when I was sixteen. Foolishly with hindsight, I let my name and address be published. Two death threats and a broken window at my parent's home later didn't put me off, it's just that I never felt the need again. Every week I wonder if any of the letters I read are by any of the members on here, as I know we are a passionate lot, who aren't afraid to speak our minds. Any other letter writters or stories out there? |
Re: Members in print.
Well done Mrs Pilkington. I would welcome a look at Margaret’s letter, without driving 30 odd miles. Anyone happy to scan? I would be grateful….
|
Re: Members in print.
Gosh your a pain Doug. ;) You said the same thing last week about Gayle's letter.
I don't have the know how to scan it, but if no one else has by later tonight I will type it out for you mate, how's that for neighbourliness? |
Re: Members in print.
I haven't seen it yet......I really didn't think they would publish it.......although it wasn't as scathing as perhaps it could have been.
|
Re: Members in print.
Margaret Pilkington…..you little dark horse you……….Congratulations Margaret. Mr G…..Don’t worry sir, I’ll drive over tomorrow afternoon and read it in the pub. Not all of us live close enough to nip out to the paper shop or around to Tinks for a money saving shufty……

Re: Members in print.
Doug...specially for you.
Dear Sir, With reference to the Weekly column by Mr Angry. Has he no more grasp of the English language than to use the same old hackneyed cliche every week...? I am sure that there arepupils in the local Secondary Schools who could write a more coherent article on topics of local or national interest. Maybe you should boil his blood for a bit, so that he can see what it really feels like. Isn't it time that this man was sent for a lie down in a darkened room...? It is obvious that life is all just a bit too much for him. He lets petty incidents and inconsequential happenings get to him. I am sure it is against the rules of Health and Safety to make someone work when they are so stressed out. It is high time that Mr angry was given a break, or even pensioned off......on health grounds of course. Yours etc Margaret Pilkington |
Re: Members in print.
Yes, Doug.......just a wee bit of a dark horse......though the grey is making a good attempt to get through.
|
Re: Members in print.
Here, Here, Margaret I couldn't agree more.
|
Re: Members in print.
I love you Mrs Pilkington, you’re a star and a real lady......if a little aggressive at times…..Thank you Margaret. You said you’d do it! I think you should do a follow up entitled. “A Lady in Broadway” recounting your fellow member’s dismay at the Broadway fiasco……

well done Margaret "it's a cracker" (in best irish accent!!!) :)
|
Re: Members in print.
I am glad there are some like minded people out there.
I think that column is a waste of column inches, and I do think it would be good, once the schools go back, to let maybe Year 10/11 have a bash at writing something of local or even national interest. It would make a very good English project. |
Re: Members in print.
Excellent idea....................
|
Re: Members in print.
As her number one fan, I would encourage anybody that enjoyed Marg's letter to read her blog.
Everyday my face aches from smiling whilst I read it.:) |
Re: Members in print.
Another waste of space in the Observer is where they ask someone who has been prominent in a local story or event all those idiotic questions.......What is your favourite item of underwear.....? I ask you......? Who Cares.......!
|
Re: Members in print.
Doug.......you haven't seen me when I have been really aggressive.
If you get time to read some of my blog.... certainly the recent episodes......I think you may just see me in a different light. Oh, and I think my grey is going to win too! |

It is OK H.R. My virtual pet is Chewy.......but one of my real pets is a Main Coon Cat called Monty......he is a monster. I posted some pics of him on here a while back......that is what dear Doug is alluding to. Nothing rude or unseemly.

I will not swear, I will not swear, I will not swear, See Mrs Red I didn’t swear….yet. :p
If I can find the tread I'll post a link Margaret. This is a beast that should be honoured for it's magnificent, if not the fact that it's big enough to eat you if one didn't. :) |
Re: Members in print.
I have done it again........written another letter to the Observer. Let's see if they print this one.

Yes, if you want...... but they may not print this one.

Re: Members in print.
Here goes.
Dear Sir, I wish to challenge the misconception you may have inadvertently created by giving my letter in last weeks Observer, the title 'It Really Makes My Blood Boil'. My blood has never boiled, I may have been annoyed, irritated or agitated, but never has my blood boiled. The points I was trying to establish last week were:- 1) the overuse of a very tired cliche. 2) the petty and inconsequential topics used by Mr Angry. (goodness knows there are enough real anger making topics out there in the world and in our own locality) 3) the column should be ditched. I still think that, (when the Schools go back in September) you should offer this space to the pupils of year 10/11 to air their views on issues of local, national or global interest. Who knows, you may find a budding columnist in their midst. If the Mr angry column was started to introduce some levity, then I would have to say it fails miserably. Yours etc. |
Re: Members in print.
Love It Margaret :D
|
Re: Members in print.
Very good, I expected nothing less.
The Mr Angry illustrarion is crap as well, it really makes.......... oh, better not!;) |
Re: Members in print.
Two cracking letters there Margaret. The Mr Angry column really is a waste of space with highly forgettable topics being ranted about. This kind of tat is only there to fill a gap which would be far better used by local school kids airing their views. Maybe a small prize for the best column could be offered on a weekly basis, cinema tickets, music vouchers etc. You never know, it may even encourage kids to write in English instead of text speak...:)

Re: Members in print.
That is my fervent hope Lettie.......and a picture of the columnist for the week would do no harm either.
|
Re: Members in print.
What you could include Margaret is...... "why don't you bring back that talented Mrs Knight?" Only joking, I think the chance of them asking me back is about as slim as it can get.
|
Re: Members in print.
I did think about it Gayle.....believe me I did.
I had sent it by the time I posted on here.....my motto is 'Do it NOW' |
Re: Members in print.
I think Mr. Angry is a poor imitation of a similar column in a Lancaster newspaper and I agree that it is little more than a waste of space. As it doesn't have an actual by line it may well not be written by one individual but cobbled together in the office by whoever has a spare moment. (Could be wrong about that so I'd better not say it too loudly.)
|
Re: Members in print.
Perhaps we should have the Accy Web Challenge! Let's see how many letters we can get printed in one week - see if we can fill an entire page of the paper with Accy Web writers (all on different subjects, of course).
