I heard new rule was due to the new scanning equipment that will be used, what difference a smile would make I don't know

Re: no smiling...

Oh you should see my passport photo. I had to renew it in April and I knew about the "no smiling" so I went to Morrisons and used a photo booth.

My hair is grey, it has been since I was 30 (inherited from my dad), and I wear glasses. The photo is, as they nearly always are, over-exposed. Against the white background in the booth I look like I have no top to my head. My glasses (reactions lenses) are quite dark but have a bright spot in the middle of each lens. My non-smiling expression makes me look extremely depressed and there is a purple shadow on my neck that looks like someone has just tried to strangle me. This was the second attempt in the booth - the first lot were even worse. I looked at least 90 the first time, on the 2nd I just look 85.

Perhaps the worst thing about it all was, when I went to Malta in May none of the immigration officials turned a hair when they looked at the photo in my passport and I thought, "My God, do I really look like that?" :(

I didn't know you were ever allowed to smile on a passport photo! You mean to say that all my passport photos have been miserable all these years and they didn't have to be. lol

By the way, did you know that there are only two people who have had special dispensation to wear sunglasses on their passport photos. 100 ackers to the first person who can guess who they are.

It won't be long then before all new babies have barcodes tattooed on their foreheads at birth.

The queen and prince charles

Gayle 10-09-2005 20:30

Re: no smiling...

No to Elton John, no to the Queen and Prince Charles. Don't think the Queen needs a passport, not sure if Prince Charles has one either.

AngelaSmith 10-09-2005 21:22

Apparently it can be a 'restrained' smile (whatever that is!) and has something to do with fitting in with worldwide biometric scanning!!

junetta 10-09-2005 21:50

Re: no smiling...

It seems that headwear is acceptable if for religious beliefs, ummmmm!!

I'm really puzzling over the sunglasses question so please put me out of my misery!! i'm indoors reckons it's the Blairs.............and I thought of that Blunkett person.

Would have loved 100 ackers for a pet!

Oh, and, my broadband speed doubled today.........cooking on gas now!

Gayle 10-09-2005 21:53

Re: no smiling...

No, it's not the Blairs, or any blind person.

You'll have to keep guessing.

junetta 10-09-2005 21:57

One hunderd ackers are on their way to you. Yes, it's the two people who changed their names by deedpoll to Jake and Elwood Blues. They got a special dispensation as they argued that they were better known with the dark glasses than without.

Cheers

oooo thanks :o I should post this in what makes you smile. getting an answer right and even better getting some ackers for it.

THANKS GAYLE XX

Re: no smiling...

I didn't know anyone had done that (deed poll name change) so they aren't as well known as they might think.

Surprising that they can get away with that if blind people can't do the same and most blind people who wear them are surely far more recognisable with their dark glasses than without. I don't think I've ever seen Ray Charles or Stevie Wonder without them.

Just look at how strange Roy Orbison used to look if he took his trade-mark specs off even though he could see.

Re: no smiling...

you'd think you should be allowed to smile on passport photos...cuz when you get to passport control you always put on a fake smile.

Samael 11-09-2005 09:15

Re: no smiling...

Your not supposed to smile, cause any facial expressions can make you look different, when your face is relaxed and not smiling it's in neutral giving you your REAL looks.

janet 11-09-2005 10:45

Re: no smiling...

I never knew that you could smile on your passport photo,i look very grim on mine, mind you it is an old one.lol
