Why do they do that......?
Why do they do that.......the media I mean......? The other day Andrew (Freddie) Flintoff was the best thing since sliced bread......now all the media can do is slate him for getting drunk after winning the Ashes back for us. It seems to me that the Press build celebrities and sportsmen up and then take great pleasure in taking a pop at them.
Surely the guy is allowed to celebrate a well won victory.......he did give up the booze for the length of the competition.......and if the Ashes ahd been held in Oz he would have been able to celebrate and then sleep off the excesses on the flight back home. What do you think......? |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Thats the curse of the uk media unfortunately, a normal person can do anything but celebrities cant is the case & to the media thats money but argue the case they chose that career as they say to Ms Beckham. I think its great that they celebrated like the rest of us did but its only them that get the book for it, shame cos sports stars do train & it should be celebrated when england do well & winning the ashes is the dream for cricketers & fans alike.

Re: Why do they do that......?
if everybody that had ,had a skinful, behaved as those lads did there would be no nead to complain, they were ful of high spirits and caused no trouble at all...... i wish i had been to their party......
http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_22_25.gif bet there was one or two headaches this morning though |
Re: Why do they do that......?
What I cant understand is who are the media supposed to be representing in their opinions, because as far as i am aware I think the majority of people that I have met through my life would do excatly the same in their position, when you overcome the odds in youir chosen sport/hobby and especially when representing this great country of ours show me the man or woman that wouldn`t have got newted.
Its about time we voted with our pockets and stopped buying the rags that type tripe ( possibly what I am doing now, but you didnt have to pay to read this), put them out of buissness until they stop trying to form how we think |
Re: Why do they do that......?
It's a national obsession, building up people and then knocking them of their pedestal that they may never have asked to be placed on anyway.
Charlotte Church, a talented girl, who does no more than thousands of nineteen year old girls do, gets slated for enjoying herself. Good luck to her. Although it's the press that does this, we mustn't forget who ultimately fuels the fire, the people that buy the papers. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
I can honestly say that I haven't bought a national newspaper for about 10 years, purely because they contain so little news, but lots of celebrity gossip which doesn't interest me in the slightest.
There are other ways of keeping up with world events, TV, Teletext, Radio and Internet. In my opinion newspapers are only good for wrapping chips in.:D |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Well, I do like my morning paper.......I like to read the letters and do the word quizzes and I do like it when the press support our sportsmen.......but to support them one day and knock them down the next does seem to be a bit strange. Oh, and the paper I read is not one of the 'Red top' ones.
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Finding fault with others seems to be a British pastime, and if someone is in the public eye they get the wort of it.
The newspaper I buy has lots of news in it and lots of interesting articles. Like Margaret I enjoy reading the letters too. In fact that's the first page I usually turn to. I don't actually read the "celebrity gossip" bits or the "soap opera news" if there is any and which isn't even news for goodness sakes, it isn't real and I have to say that I find most other tabloid type newspapers have more of the latter. I'm not saying there isn't some of it in the newspaper I buy but if I buy it to read other things how does the paper know what sells and what doesn't? Stopping buying the paper altogether wouldn't solve the problem and besides I'd miss my sudoku. I think I'm waffling. I suppose writing to the paper to tell them we really don't find all that nonsense to be newsworthy and don't appreciate them when they criticise at every given opportunity might help. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
The news Barons look at what is the most profitable and best selling paper and feed us more of the same.
Britains best selling 'newspaper' by far, The Sun. I rest my case. There's more news in Viz. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Ah well there you go cos I never read the Sun and if my paper got like that I wouldn't be buying it.
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Hee hee, I suspect you read the same paper as my Mum, and Marg P.
There is a lot to read in it, but you must admit it's influenced by the red tops and does have it's fair share of celebrity drivel. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Yes, you are right Garinda......but like Willow, I rarely read the celebrity gossip.......but the slating of Andrew Flintoff is a whole page so it is very difficult to give it a miss.
I wouldn't use the Sun to wipe my bum......I'd be afraid of it making my bot dirtier......! |

Re: Why do they do that......?
In fact, though I am not a great fan of cricket......I feel aggrieved for Andrew Flintoff.......don't they realise that he sponsored by Thwaites....he was only taking advantage of some of their wares.
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Margeret not too sure if Thwaties have any outlets in London and I bet it was not beer that the lads had but plenty of CHAMPERS reports state that they spent £25k that night!!!!! so wot let them have a good blow out for doing something that the peeps that type the dribble cant do play a very good game of cricket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Spot on Ber999T.......! They must have took some Thwaites with them though......surely!
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
the only papers i buy are the express and the mail every saturday...FOR THE TELE MAGS...and the free cd's
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
perhaps its because the english media have no idea how to deal with WINNERS pmsl.

If it had more drivel and less news and sensible stuff I'd ignore it like I do the others. There's enough papers with the rubbish in so our daily could miss out on it altogether - they might even end up selling a few more coies. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
I dont get the paper anyway nor mags cos i get my gossip from here erm the net LOL :)
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
I don't think the press has been too critical of Sir Freddy's liquid consumption in the aftermath of this great victory; had he - and the rest of the team - engaged in such antics on the eve of any of the tests, then it would be a different story. That is the sort of caper we have come to expect from the bunch of sorry losers that go under the name of the England football team.
Remember that the cult of celebrity works both ways; there are many famous and talented people who do not appear in the gossip colums or in the idiot magazines such as Hello! or OK!. That they do not is because it is their choice. We shall see which way Freddy & the boys will go. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
I don't read the sort of drivel that goes into the likes of Hello, et al.
Who gives a toss who has got married, or how many babies they have, or how long they have been gay, etc etc etc. I try and use my spare time more constructively, like spending it with the kids, or playing computer games. Cheaper than a magazine, and much better quality! |

I watched an interview on morning telly and was a little disappointed that the England Captain had obviously had a skin full. This was an interview that will be seen worldwide. Sorry if you think I am wrong but I would prefer not to see representatives of my Country drunk on TV giving interviews. I think you would have a different opinion if Tony Blair was drunk on TV. I am proud that we won the Ashes, but please, make sure only sober people give interviews. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
I our celebs want to give an interview with a mega hangover I have no objection if that hangover is well earned. They fought a hard series and I for one am proud that after regaining the Ashes thelads went outand had a few drinks too many good on them they earned it.
:Banane35: If it was me I would still have been drinking or lying in a gutter with a big cheesey grin on my mush. :D |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Going back to the original point, in fact before becoming the hero of the hour, Flintoff was shamed in the press before he became the golden boy of English cricket. Before he was married recently, and became a father, he featured in many stories regarding both drinking and sexual excesses to put Gazza to shame.
I suppose he was knocked off his pedestal before he ever got on, only to be knocked off again when he did. In answer to Willow's point that there isn't too much celebrity drivel in her paper, you must admit that it has a lot more than it had twenty years ago. Even the voice of middle England is influenced, by the popularity if the soar away Sun. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
They won the ashes wasnt that good enough? I just read in the paper what freddie was supposed to have drunk wish i had his stamina! Pity preston though - theyve given freddie the freeman of the city - hes allowed to have a free drink in the pubs in preston and a free lift home from the police! Theyve been really good through the summer and this was celebrating theyd won the ashes back first time since 1987 they had a right to party. And at least they won it - what about the dentists chair in Japan or China where did they end up? All we need now is football to win something doubt it though the way they keep playing.
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
The way Sven is setting a team we couldnt win against Trinidad so all we would get is a used wooden spoon. Now the slating from that would be good in the papers and on the news as it would be just what he deserves.
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
you could have understood thehue and cry if freddie had acted like oliver reed did on a certain chat show ,
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
You go freddie and drink that city dry!! him & the lads certainly deserve it :D
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Exactly, why do we expect celebrated people to behave differently from anyone else, especially succesful ones?
Enjoy your victories. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
Don't forget he has to be some sort of role model as well. He can party but he just partied toooo much
|
Re: Why do they do that......?
Quote:
Why should we expect people, who are good in certain fields, to be role models? Flintoff is good at cricket, Charlotte Church had a mature voice at an early age, Prince Harry.....oh, right he's good for nothing, he's allowed to be a dick head at our expense. |
Re: Why do they do that......?
hey who are we to decide whether they partied too much!!!! They rightly deserved to party as much as they wanted. As a mother of 2 kids I don't think they were anything but professional throught the tests so why not have some fun when they had finished and won!
