It's so wonderful living back in a community that cares for each other. l'm lucky I have great neighbours, and I like to think they think the same about me.

However when I'm older if I refuse help more than twice, take the hint and leave me alone!;)

Its good to see that some still care out in the community.

Thats all well and good Rindy saying that, but later in life when your mind is not as astute as it is now, these (Leave me alone ) comments should not be taken seriously, in fact they could be a call for help in a round about sort of way. The onset of confusion in old age can be attributed to all manner of problems none of which should be ignored and put down as them being just an awkward ******.

I heard about this lady on the news, with some comments from her family and the authorities. It's very sad that this kind of thing could happen in this day and age. The failure of any of the authorities to gain access to her may well have been because of her depressed state after losing her husband/partner earlier this year, and her not letting them in for this reason.. However, would access have been gained to this lady had she not been paying her council tax for instance?

As for the family, I find it difficult to believe that out of 10 children and 30 grandchildren, not one of them had a key to her property. She may have been depressed and wanted to die, she may have been a cantankerous old biddy for all we know, but that should not have stopped her family from gaining access..

iv'e met a lady though doing my volunteer shopping for age concern, & this lady is 90 yrs old, her friends are of much the same age, so she is basically on her own, so i go & do a shop for her each week, but have now started taking her out once a fortnight, she loves it, we go to asda, bit daunting for me cos it takes a long time (4hrs), but the look on her face is all the thanks i need, its, smile smile smile, & we have a laugh to boot, we are trying matalan next, she has not been out for 18months so its a tonic for her. please try to think of someone on their own, & give them half a day of your time.(you might need it yourself one day)

Aaaw she sounds lovely Mez.

You reminded me of someone I knew years ago, a rather absent minded elderly gentleman but such a love. He once left me a little note, then he came to see if I'd got the note, then he told me what he'd written on the note, then he picked the note up and read it to me just to be sure I'd got the message.

He did tend to take up rather a lot of the day but he was lovely. I remember he used to love "Mivvi" lollies.

If this lady was refusing help of any kind and denying even her family access to her property where were the SS? When I worked as a community carer I had to visit a terminally ill lady who began to refuse to get washed or dressed, then by chance I found her meals were being shoved under the bed. I reported it to my manager who rang the SS and the same day she was admitted to hospital. So I know they have powers to ensure the elderly's welbeing Why weren't they brought in to this lady?

No what you did was open a thread that in some ways has educated people into hows things should be done as apposed to how they are done. I did it with "Hospitals" and though there was some literary bashing going on I learnt more from that thread than I could from any leaflet.
