Re: White Rabbits

Hi

I have been doing a little research and it seems a variation of a 1920 'Folklore' saying.

'According to several correspondents in the 'Westminster Gazette' (spring of 1919) the following belief is common in many parts of Great Britain, with local variants: To secure good luck of some kind, usually a present, one should say 'Rabbits' three times just before going to sleep on the last day of the month, and then 'Hares' three times on waking the next morning.1982 Woman c.50 (Stockton-on-Tees, Co. Durham) The first words you say for a lucky month are 'White Rabbits'. If you can remember to say that twelve times a year, you'll have a very lucky year. 1984 Woman 47 (Chichester, Sussex) If you say 'Black cats' on the last night of the month and 'White rabbits' next morning, you will get a present before the month is out." From "A Dictionary of Superstitions" Edited by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem (Oxford University Press, Oxford & New York, 1989). Page 192.

hope this helps it didnt really make it any clearer for me, hopefully somebody will have a black hat.

Re: White Rabbits

You are only doomed to bad lucky accymel if

its Friday the Thirteenth

you Walk under a ladder

or A bat flying into the house

you hear An owl hooting 3 times

you see 3 butterflies together

you Look at the new moon over your left shoulder

you find A 5-leaf clover

you Break a glass while proposing a toast

Putting a shirt on inside out

Red and white flowers together

on Hearing a rooster crow at night

you Cut your nails on a Friday

Putting a hat on a bed

Getting out of bed left foot first

Violets blooming out of season

A picture falling

Breaking a mirror

Singing before breakfast

Opening an umbrella indoors

Giving away a wedding present

Stepping on cracks in the sidewalk

An itch inside your nose

Crossed knives

seeing an owl during daylight

looks like were all doomed!
Bad Luck: A bat flying into the house

Re: White Rabbits

ive been brought up with my mum telling me that you have to say white rabbit on the first of that month, three times before noon only with the letter R in the month ie- white rabbit x3 in jan, feb, mar, apr, sept, oct, nov, dec and if you say it afer 12 then you get bad luck? im that bad at it that ive got my fella into saying it and his familiy too.
i never walk under ladders,
i try not to cross a black cats path,
i do not walk on nicks in the pavement and
i never walk over a single grate cover only a double one which is supposed to be good luck.
if i see a lonely magpie i will search for the other and sing the rhyme and salute them.
i never open a bag of crisps upside down,
i have never yet smashed a mirror!
im a lot worse but id be here all day is it me or are there others like me too and believe in all this nonsense?

It's not bad luck putting the shirt on inside out.
But it is bad luck to take the shirt off and put it the right way round.

Re: White Rabbits

I remember at School doing "a pinch and a punch for the first of the month", I had never heard of it till I went to Rhyddings, maybe an Ossy thing?

grego 02-10-2005 19:30

Re: White Rabbits

I've heard of pinch and punch, thought it was just an excuse to give a dead arm (haven't had one of them for years), I dont think I'm that superstitious but always say hello to Mr Magpie!

Is your house full of dropped knives or do you curse someone else by getting them to do the dangerous deed of picking them up for you?
