Smells.

What is your favorite smell or perfume?

If you do wear a scent, do you wear it for yourself or for other people?

Although it won't damage your health, has someone's perfume spoilt your enjoment of a meal?

Does advertising affect your decision about what you will perfume yourself with, as the heady scents of the 80's like Giorgio and Poison aren't as popular as they were.

I wear Lagerfeld when I'm going out, it's deep and not very commonly available, so very unlike me. When I want to smell fresh and clean I love Happy by Clinique, because it's just so fresh and citrusy.

My favorite smell on a woman though is Youth Dew by Estee Lauder, because it reminds me of my Mum kissing me goodnight if my parents were going out when I was little.

Re: Smells.

I wear Eternity perfume myself

I adored Lynx Tempest ..... I don't think they sell it anymore :(....... it used to make me go weak at the knees if any man was wearing it in the same room as me :) oohhhhh!!!

Re: Smells.

I've got a few favourites - depnds on my mood, the time of day or evening and where I'm going.

For daytime I like something light and fluffy and floral.
For evenings I prefer something a little more interesting.

My daughter has introduced me to "Exclamation!" and I rather like it.

I definitely wear a scent for myself. I'm the one closest to the smell so I want it to be something I like. Mind you, it's nice if whoever I'm with likes it too and if I had one that Busman found revolting then I'd probably abandon it.

Oh yes someone else's perfume can certainly spoil my enjoyment of a meal. If it's too strong, overpowering or sickly I feel like I'm eating it! Part of the enjoyment of food is the smell as well as the taste.

Some scents remind me of people too - my Gran always used "4711". "Je Reviens" reminds me of my mother.

If I smell someone wearing Antaeus by Chanel it really affects me. I just want to smell or even hug that person and breath it in.

I did consider buying it myself, but it's probably wrong trying to lick yourself.

Re: Smells.

One perfume I really don't like is Samsara (my apologies to anyone who wears it) I think it has a real earthy smell. I find myself checking the room for someone smoking dope before I realise it's THAT perfume!

Does anybody remember a range of talc/body lotion/bubble bath absolutely ages ago which came in sort of orange coloured, plastic containers with brown plastic, tortoiseshell effect tops?

I've done a quick sketch but the top doesn't look to be in proportion. The oval above is a cross section.

The orange range was brought out first and then they brought out a lemony one but I don't think that caught on. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called but I did like it way back then.

I believe that perfume or aftershave should fit the wearer like a good pair of shoes, snug and comfy and never tiresome. I like to wear Cerruti 1881 Aftershave or Paco Rabanne; I’m not a lover of much else. I also like to use Lynx Africa and Touch. I wear it for the simple purpose of Not Smelling unattractive when in company.

I love the tones of Youth Jew on a woman, but much prefer the seductiveness of Yves Saint Laurent - Rive Gauche. There are not many perfumes that I dislike other than 4711.

For a blast from the past, I loved Old Spice and still like its lingering tones. For the girls it was Charlie “The Original Stuff” as a teenager it use to pump the pheromones whenever it hit me……..

Just to lower the tone, you can't beat the smell of a good Ale...................:)

I can't remember the name either, but I'm having a vision it was produced by Coty.

On men it's got to be the great smell of Brute.
I'm not a big perfume fan.
I used to love a perfume called Sea Jade by Yardley but they stopped production in the 80s.
I don't like strong Musky smells.

garinda 13-10-2005 23:20

Re: Smells.

Just a note gentlemen.

Aftershave is rubbish, it's alchol based. You should always go for eau de toilette, which is oil based and won't irritate your skin. Plus the perfume lasts longer.

[I do hope eau de toilette isn't censored for not being English.];)

Isn't persomal taste a funny thing? Someone I used to work with must have taken "splash it all over" far too literally and put me off Brut for life.

Mmmmmm yes 1881 is lovely.

Yes! I think that orange thing was by Coty but what the flippin heck was it?

lettie 14-10-2005 13:37

Re: Smells.

I tend to wear Cerruti 1881 these days, and I love it. If I want something a bit stonger and spicy I will go for Clinique Aromatics Elixir and I also like Clinique Happy.

I remember having some Opium perfume in the 80's, it was really popular then, but it makes me gag now. My mate always wore Poison, and it used to knock me sick.

I'm really fussy with perfumes and it takes me ages to find one that I like. Sales people usually run for cover when I enter a perfumerie. On men I like L'eau d'Issey (or whatever it's called)....

I could never afford expensive perfume in the 80's and early 90's, so me and my sis used to go halves on a copy of Cosmo, rip out the sniff pages of all the new perfumes and rub them all over ourselves for a night out.... A different designer perfume every night for about a quid.... Bargain or what!!!!!!:D

Can't stand any overpowering perfume at all. Someone I know wears tons of the stuff and when I've been in her company for even a short while I can smell it on me.

I was once paid a big compliment and told that I didn't smell of anything except 'clean'. Sorry, but I always think that people who wear too much perfume are trying to mask some other sort of smell.

Re: Smells.

I don't know if people in London stink more than they do here, or it might be the fact that you are herded together closer on the tube, but your nasel senses are definitely invaded more by people's bad smells there.

I did try to restart the fashion for nosegays whilst I was there. Those little posies of sweet smelling flowers our ancestors used to hold under their noses to mask the smell of the hoi-poloi's stench.

Valerie Singleton showed how to make one on Blue Peter many years ago. You take an orange and cover it with cloves, then leave it to dry for a month, attach a pretty ribbon and hey presto!

Re: Smells.

Aqua Manda!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been racking my brains over that for ages! The lemon one was Aqua Citra. I remember that now.

As a teenager I loved Aqua Manda talc and body lotion.

There was also one by Coty called Kiku and someone once bought me a spherical container of the talc with a big fluffy puff inside. I loved it at first but the lotion version of it seemed to go off after a while.

It's funny how we wear a perfume for ourselves and then get so used to the smell that we end up not being able to smell it.

I don't like strong smelling perfumes either. You know the sort you can still taste 10 minutes after you leave a person. I know its old fashioned now but I like the smell of old spice on a man.

A couple of years ago we were in Adelaide and we noticed that a lady was following us around. We went into Target and she came up to us and asked what perfume I was wearing......I told her that we were both wearing NIAGARA by Courreges.....it is a man's scent really, but I loved it and we shared at the bottle.....well, bottles because I bought a few.....good job too, I don't think you can buy it now. Anyway we told this lady that if she came to our hotel we would give her the bottle.

Re: Smells.

Love perfume, often go without makeup but never without perfume.

I choose a scent because I like it, which is a bit daft, because once you've been wearing it an hour or two, your nose adapts and you can't smell it any more - that's why you sometimes think you need more when you don't.

The sense of smell is just about the most fascinating sense we have, but don't let's get started on that, anyone interested ask me, and you can have the two hour lecture with slides and experimental data!

I use Van Cleef, because I like it. Interestingly enough, some years ago (yes, I've had my moments) one Christmas 3 different men bought me perfume. The man I went sailing with bought me Dior Dune, which is an open air, fresh, sort of stuff. The posh bloke I went to posh dinners with bought me First - very grown up and sophisticated. The new man bought me Opium, because he liked it (I LOATHED it, but I wore it anyway). It's interesting how differently people see you (or smell you), isn't it.

Once had to leave a concert at the Barbican because the woman in front of me had apparently bathed in Poison. It was either leave or throw up over her. Can't stand Paris, either.

For men? - Jazz by Yves St Laurent. It makes my knees go weak every time.

Tip - never spray your eau de toilette/perfume around your neck/head. When it warms up, perfume rises. Spray it round your ankles and calves, and you'll walk in a fragrant cloud all day! (Coco Chanel said you should spray it everywhere you expect to be kissed, but it can sting, so be warned!!)
