Do you know which ward you live in?

So, do you know who your Councillor is and which ward you live in? Or do you simply not care?

entwisi 28-10-2005 09:17

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Yep, I know both.

I know which ward i live in but only because i read it on here, my councillor used to come on here too, but strangely we have not seen him for a while:)

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

I do. Thanks for the info regarding the ward you're fighting. I've done lots of searching for a Hyndburn map showing all the wards, but can't find a detailed one, anyone got any links?

I think I might have given myself a bit too much territory - it doesn't quite start at the railway bridge but a bit further in - same principle though!

I saw one in the foyer of the library earlier this year along side of a gallery of the councillors. I would have thought either the Town Hall or the Library would fore fill you needs rindy?

Surely this would be on that oracle of information Hyndburn life?

There wasn't one for I'm not telling you, so you'll just have to be nice to me just in case I'm able to vote for you next time around!

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

If we are not sure of our ward how can you be sure who your local and county councillers are? This would pose a quandry if you need their help with an issue. There has to be something somewere on the lines of entwisi's oracle or are the council and its councillers only wouried about it at election time?

It's not quite good enough because it's not a map, but here's a list of councillors and wards

Thanks Yerself, that's a really great map site.
Hopefully it will go in Gayle's favour that Peter Britcliffe doesn't actually live in the ward he represents, yet she does.

I know my councillor and my ward, and vote at every election.I have called on my councillor for help in the past, and he has been most helpful in getting results to my requests.

No but I bet you will knock on a few doors in the lead up to the election, never ever did PB & BW do any knocking at ours, mind the ex MP lived next door, so I think they assumed they had my vote  it seems like i've still got the same breed in my new ward

To be perfectly honest I think having the leader of the council as your ward councillor is very good indeed, no matter who he or she is. I have heard Cllr Britcliffe being accused of being biased towards Oswaldtwistle, my thought on that is "it's good isn't it :D". As long as the Conservatives are in power in Hyndburn I am all for Cllr Britcliffe being my ward councillor. However if Labour were in control of Hyndburn I think a Labour ward councillor might be more useful. Anyone know who will be in power after the next election?

No Gary. I have very little interest in politics in general. It was just an observation.

It was the thought of ruffling your barnet AND Gayle whipping Britcliffe.:)

Gayle 28-10-2005 18:20

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Actually Neil, in one way that IS my toughest battle - some other Labour Councillors have accused PB of being biased towards Oswaldtwistle which is pretty natural if that's where your ward is and you have the power to be biased. Can't fault the guy for wanting the best for his own constituents - I'll be exactly the same.

As for which party will be in power after the next elections is actually partly down to who wins in St Andrews.

The Conservatives hold power by just one seat at the moment. Not all the seats are up for re-election next May, in fact there are only 11 seats up for re-election. Eight of those are currently already held by Labour, the other three are held by Conservative and they are ALL in Oswaldtwistle.

So to keep control of the Council all the Conservatives have to do is to hold on to their three seats.

To take control the Labour party has to hold all eight of their seats plus win at least one of the seats in Oswaldtwistle.

So, I think you'll find that most of the campaigning in the whole borough is actually done in Oswaldtwistle because that's where it's most important. I think you'll also find that we have really good Christmas lights, the litter issue is dealt with more efficiently and lots of other things in the run up to next May.

I bet this politics stuff is boring most people already.

SPUGGIE J 28-10-2005 18:22

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

I will now start to feel sorry for all those people on this site from Ossy as it is going to become a political battle ground. Keep a stiff upper lip please and show them mo mercy (apart from Gayle).

garinda 28-10-2005 18:23

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Although it may seem boring, as you say the whole power balance of the council will depend on the results of the Oswaldtwistle wards, thus making it important to all the people of Hyndburn.

Neil 28-10-2005 18:25

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Thats interesting Gayle I did not realise it was such a close race.

Gayle 28-10-2005 18:26

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

The three Labour Oswaldtwistle candidates are

St Andrews - me
Immanuel - Collette McCormack
St Oswalds - Bill Pinder

Very close, but that's why the Labour candidates are being announced so early so that we can get a good run up to the campaign.

garinda 28-10-2005 18:31

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Just a point.
One of Britcliffes biggest supporters/chums is Kevin Horkins, he of celebrity pet fame. He owns the Opticians opposite the Town Hall in Oswaldtwistle. Outside his shop, blocking the pavement, is a sign saying 'today only- free eye tests'. The sign has been there for months since the shop opened. It's illegal on two counts. One blocking a public highway, and secondly false advertising, as it's clearly more than one day that eye tests are free.

Friends in high places certainly help.;)

Gayle 28-10-2005 18:34

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

Yes, they have a lot more money than we do but I think I might just be able to call in a few celebrity friends to support me too!

garinda 28-10-2005 18:38

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

I hope the other two Labour candidates are going to raise their profile a bit, I haven't heard of them.

Here here that is a good idea at least then they will get the feel of how real people think and act.

To go back on thread, I used to be in Milnshaw and now I`m in Central... without even moving and do you know I preferred being in Milnshaw.

Gayle 28-10-2005 20:23

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

I know there's only 20 people voted on this thread but there's 70% who claim to always vote - even general elections don't get that sort of turnout and local elections are lucky if they get a 40% turnout.

Maybe us Accy webbers like to have our voices heard.

Re: Do you know which ward you live in?

I know my councillors names and i know the ward i live in. Even though i live in Rossendale i have Greg Pope as my MP because due to constituency restructuring back in the 90's two wards from haslingden were put into in hyndburn constituency due to hyndburn not having enough people living in that constituency. Plus it does really help when im a local political partys secretary and stood for election a couple of years back!

Yes, all three of us live in our own wards! Though Oswaldtwistle is Oswaldtwistle if you know what I mean - if for example only two out of the three of us got elected we wouldn't stop doing things that were for the greater good of Ossy just because it fell in the third ward.

Being new to the area, and not overly interested in politics, I didn't have a clue about which ward I'm in or who my councillor is. Obviously I do now. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
