taxi drivers

Taxi drivers are a strange lot aren't they? Tonight me and my boyfriend got a taxi and were told off for ignoring him. We got a lecture about how normally people are too drunk to talk him properly but we were all "gab gab gab" in the back without even giving him a second thought. My boyfriend tried to ask him what the matter was but he was evasive. I got out of the taxi and my fella asked him the standard taxi communication of " how busy have you been today and also what time do you finish" this worked quite well and just goes to show that taxi drivers are sensitive souls and do like normal conversation. Or at least like people to know what time they finish work.

Re: taxi drivers

Ask them in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

I find that normally shuts them up.

Well, most of the time.;)

Re: taxi drivers

Funny, I thought it was just me who got the awkward ones. A few weeks ago I took a cab home from Rishton (Betty's Cabs) Not only did the driver insist on delivering a dreary monologue on what a b*tch his girlfriend was, we also had to stop off at the office to pick up his pet jack russel puppy, which chewed my hands and covered me in white dog hair. Having bored me to tears and incommoded me into the bargain he then sought to overcharge me for the privilege.

I look at the taxi rank opposite Accy library and think "that's a good queue for the unemployed".

Well generally i get the best cab firm in accy, so much i know most of the drivers so conversation isnt that hard & quite a laugh sometimes but most of all feel safe.:D

I once had a brilliant idea for taxi cabs - karaoke taxi. You basically get to choose which song you want to sing along to and they give you the words and put on a CD. So you can be totally drunk and sing your heart out on the way home. Obviously, the taxi driver would need to wear ear plugs if I ever got in! lol

Re: taxi drivers

Can you imagine it if bus drivers were like that?

"I'm not moving this bus until at least one of you talks to me. I sit here all day getting you from A to B and do you care about me? Oh no, I'm just invisible aren't I? I've got problems too, you know, but do any of you care? Well these doors are staying shut until you give me a good conversation and in half an hour I'm going back to the depot whether you like it or not so talk to me."

I am a taxi driver & have been for about 8 years.I have got to agree, like in all lines of work you get good and bad.Like Accy Mel said choose the firm that suits you best and stick to them.As for being a funny breed I wouldnt like to comment cause what ever I say my beloved Tinkerbelle will obviously rip me to bits, and Garinda you never offer me cups of tea and slices of cake!!!!:)

Re: taxi drivers

Did anyone se the article in last week's Observer where there's going to be a new taxi firm that will supply you with a glass of wine each time you travel with them? Sounds like a stange idea to me, not sure if it will catch on....

Some of the taxi drivers down there do need charm school but I have the majority of the time had a good laugh with them. I know most of my local drivers up here and it has its perks esp on a Sunday morning when one is heading in the same direction as myself and he picks me up drops me off and it didnt cost me a penny.

the best conversation i ever had with a taxi driver was on my way to blackburn

i asked how many gears his new car he was so proud of had and when he said 5 with such pride in his voice i suggested he tried using one or two of them as he was taking ages to get where we were going :)

baby boo 31-10-2005 14:13

Re: taxi drivers

the last conversation i had with a taxi driver probably saved me from being attacked and that was four weeks ago, me and my friend got into this taxi and my friend knew this lad and she said that he could get in to the taxi to where he was going as long as he paid, he said yes ok and on the way home he was trying to get quite heavy with my friend in the back and she had enough of him so she got out still in blackburn saying she was meeting a friend and shut the door and left me with him! he started making moves on me and i got quite scared the taxi driver saw what was happening and strated making up a story for me to go along with saying that he met my boyfriend last week and didnt realise how big built he was. i went along with him trying to get this lad to realise what we were saying but he just wasnt corpus mentus, in the end the lad was supposed to get out in oswaldtwistle but he wouldnt and refused and kept grabbing hold of me and being very rough and saying that he wanted me to come with him. it was horrible, the taxi driver got out and yanked him out of the taxi and got back into his seat and the lad wuld just not leave me alone the taxi driver drove off and watched me walk into my house and i couldnt say thank you enough!!!! it only hit me the day after what could have really happend! i always talk to the drivers now you never really know when you might need one for help!

Re: taxi drivers

if it ever happens again boo just ask the taxi driver to take you to the nearest police station

baby boo 31-10-2005 15:06

Re: taxi drivers

we were nowhere near a police station he chucked the guy out at the traffic lights just up the road from stag i was scared that the guy was going to case us and follow us to the pub, luckily he didnt the taxi driver was just so nice and im aso thankfull to him. he was youngish and i personally think that if it was on oldish driver i think that the driver wouldnt have done anything. my fella went mad at me for not ringing him as he only lives two mins away. he said that hed have been round there like a shot and the other week he personally thanked the taxi driver for helping me!!! he rang up the taxi rank and enquired about who took me home and went down to blackburn to thank him! that impressed me too hes not nice like that!

Funny the taxi driver who took me home fron the Stag on Saturday was very chatty and quite interesting to talk to we ended up sat outside my house for a few minutes continuing the conversation. I too have met some funny ones though.

I used to own five taxis in Kingston. Now I am down to one, just so I can go to work when I get bored. Taxi drivers here are a valued part of the community. You seem to have some real weirdos. Taxi drivers here may be a breed apart, but not a totally differnt breed than the rest of the community. Strange cabbies you have.
