Big brother is watching.

From Peter Britcliffe's stopping smoking diary, in this weeks Observer.

'I'm told there is a price on my head for the first person who catches me with the dreaded weed.
The local chat lines urge people to use cameras annd obtain photographic proof.
They advise the biggest chance of me slipping will be in the Rose and Crown on a weekend night.'

It's so nice you are reading what we write. Just a point though, we are a forum not a chatline, even though the council apparently regards us as such, and thus stopping Accy Web from being accessed from Hynburn's libaries, unlike the councils own expensive, and rather sluggish site Hynburn Life.

Rather than just reading why don't you become a member and join in the fun?

The next time we are both in the Rose and Crown, please feel free to buy me a sweet sherry.:)

Re: Big brother is watching.

I have yet to receive my Observer and read the latest thrilling installment of the no smoking diary. I am sure that I will be sat on the edge of my seat. No doubt I will be telephoning the local chat line straight away to discuss our glorious leader's valiant attempt to quit the dreaded weed. Does anyone have the chat line number? I can't wait to call them up and get chatting.....:D

Or maybe, like most people with a life, I will get on with mine, not impose it on other people through the media and not give a fig whether PB quits smoking or not.....

Re: Big brother is watching.

Oh I hope someone gets a picture of him with a ciggie in his mouth because I would like to see it posted on MSN mesenger or AIM. It shows how far a way from reality the council is thinking our happy little world is a chat room. Has anybody checked their pasports to make sure they are not from the planet Pluto?

You said it honey..................

Re: Big brother is watching.

There is also a lovely bit of brown noseing in the letters page from John Farrer, praising Peter Britcliffe for giving up the fags.

Doug 03-11-2005 18:53

Re: Big brother is watching.

I didn't know he was that way out?:p Is that an inflammatory comment?

garinda 03-11-2005 18:57

I couldn't possibly comment on that.

YMCA does seem to be played quiet a lot when him and his gentleman friends are in the pub though.;)

I'm sure Peter will lets us know in due course........:p But before you try and sue me peter, I'm a bulls***er and I haven't got a rusty ow'd penny to my name. and even thats fake.....;)

Re: Big brother is watching.

Some cynical old wag asked if I was sponsoring Peter to carry on smoking.. . Peter has been courting as much publicity as possible. This weeks star Ob letter seemed spiked by it all and suggested hypocracy over smokers and heroin addicts and giving up nasty habits.

Glad to be back after some Conservative Councillor, or a friend of Conservative Councillor printed off my posts and sent them to legal at the Council. I have been warned.

A-B will remember one subject which is off limits and was one which flashed across senior desks at the Council. So till its was resolved [without further action] I have been keeping a low profile around here.

I'm not the only one to have been contacted by seniors at the Council over Accy Web. Vitty at the Ob has been contacted about his posts... Nice to know the spirit of freedom of speech is well and truly alive.

Re: Big brother is watching.

Ooooooh errr - does that mean I'm going to have my card marked, even before I'm elected?

Though one has to question someone's motives at trying to silence another person who was simply exercising the right for freedom of speech. I for one am always grateful when we get an insight into the workings of the Council.

SPUGGIE J 03-11-2005 20:17

Re: Big brother is watching.

Now would we mark your card Gayle. Imagine even thinking that. Also are we all going to be hunted by HBC for expresing or views and treated like criminals? Let them come and get me if they think I am bad for slating them. We cannot get at them any other way so what do they expect us to do sit back like nusery kids and do as we are told? Err I think not so they can have the international sign for up yours from me to which they seemed to be experts at.:o :o :o :o :o

Glad to have you back with us Graham......it is a bit sinister, you having your posts pulled. Free Speech.....is that one of the Human Rights.......?

chav1 03-11-2005 20:41

Re: Big brother is watching.

freedom of speech..

dosnt at fall somewhere between racism and an act of terrorism these days...?

ime just glad our thoughts cant be monitored but i bet the pc brigade and the powers that be are working on that one

people should be able to say what they like and if it offends somone then tough luck either go cry about it in a corner or shrug it off

everyone is so afraid of upseting anyone these days that they never realy say what they think anymore but provide a watered down variation of what they intentionaly wanted to say yet if somone does actualy stand up and speak their mind they are branded either racist or a trouble maker

When it reaches this stage then do we live in a country of free speach and democracy or we heading in the direction of the South American idea of govenment?

Blimey, some of our guest readers are from the secret services are they?

Perhaps the Iron Curtain didn't come down, they just moved it to Accrington.

Freedom of speech should be a right for all of us, including those in public office or the press.

cashman 03-11-2005 22:19

Re: Big brother is watching.

shabby treatment that- pulling a persons posts, free speech does obviously not apply to hbc- sue me you cretins- good to see you back graham and I am one who has not agreed with everything you say.hope vitty is not put off by these hyndburn members of the KGB.

Graham Jones 03-11-2005 22:21

Re: Big brother is watching.

Well someone took the time to print off criticisms of Peter Britcliffe and I was damning at times ;) and circulate them around Scaitcliffe Towers [can I say that??] and tried to pull me on some stuff that came close to slandering the Council and breaching confidentiality. I can't slander the Council [by law] but members of this board can.

What is worrying is Scaitcliffe Towers monitoring the posts and picking up ones by a journalist and monitoring them. I presume to make sure democracy is upheld.

garinda 03-11-2005 22:24

Re: Big brother is watching.

We all know that journalists from the Observer have been on here, one even posted under a nom de plume attacking Gayle's right to free speech, so Vitty if you read this, your freedom of speech would be a good article for your next Mr Angry column.

'It really makes my blood boil when my boss tells me what I can say, and where.......';)

Well you can be sure if I see Peter Britcliffe with a crafty fag in his mouth, in the gents in the Rose and Crown, I will post it here.

I would make a fabulous martyr.:)

The council thinks its the mightiest around and believes it should be do as I say not as I do. Next thing you know they will be trying to ban local elections because they know they will be kicked off thanks to their attitude.:(

Not a lot to say on this one other than have a look at this link

UK Big Brother Awards 2005 shortlist announced 09/06/2005
This year’s shortlist contains a mix of some of Britain’s most greedy, incompetent, invasive and manipulative mandarins and organisations.

Re: Big brother is watching.

As we know that Peter Britcliffe is undoubtedly reading this site I have a question for him - Peter, given that we know you lied about your smoking habit (you admitted in the Accy Obs that you told your Doctor it was 20 a day when really it was 40) - is there anything else you've lied about?

It seems to me that Britcliffe is hallucinating. What sort of 'baccy is he trying to give up? The wacky sort? Maybe he should'nt, because if Cameron gets elected leader of the Tories then drug abuse may well become 'de rigeur'.

Anyway, this diary is pretty pathetic & I am surprised the Observer is running with it . Have they nowt better to do? Surely the paper can find something else to fill up it's column inches with, than this cheap publicity stunt by what appears to be an increasingly desperate council leader.

Welcome back Graham. I am disgusted that your posts have been flashed around Scaitcliffe Towers and I hope that Vitty and Gayle are not deterred from posting here too. Freedom of speech is something that we lost in this country... years ago...... I think that it is time that we reclaimed our right to this, and stopped giving in to all the PC drivel bandied about by people who think that they are a cut above the rest of us. I for one don't care who I upset.....so long as it is the truth and justified...:D

SPUGGIE J 04-11-2005 16:11

Re: Big brother is watching.

P.C = Political Correctness so I propose we change it to Pritty Childish Petty C**p, Political Coersion, Politican C**p, People Caneing or People Conning. :)

Any more sugestions out there?

:Banane48:
:alright: lets claim back whats ours by rights.

:tongueout at the govenment and council.

Yes, actually all credit to him for raising money for a good cause. I hope he succeeds, surely it's better for all of us if our Council Leader is healthy!

Depend s on your definition of healthy.
