Is size important?

Do you feel your life has been affected by your size?

If you are tall do you spend your life stooping? If you are small has it affected your personality? Would you marry someone who was vastly different in size from yourself?

On this one I'm decidedly average at five foot eleven. I was always the tallest boy in my class at school, but my growth has been stunted since the age of twelve, I can't think why.:(

I’m five foot six and no I don’t think it matters. I believe that the size of your personality is more important and what you do with it in this world.

I stopped growing when I started smoking at 12 or 13, My father was 5’ 11” my grand father was 6’ are so and my great grand farther was over 6’ 2” and so on. My son is just 14 and is now as tall as me and continuing to grow.

I don't think it was the cigarettes that stunted your growth!

Apparently the only pre-defined thing that can be applied to babies, is that baby boys will be as tall, or taller than their maternal grandfather.

Mums dad was about 5' 5" , so at 5' 7" it works for me. As my granny used to say "Good stuff comes in little packages" so I suppose that,s what she was talking about.

Re: Is size important?

I wouldnt say size affects your life, like doug said its the personality that matters. At only just 5ft i dislike being short and it does make me feel consious especially when my 6 year old is nearly as tall as me. Both my brothers are a lot taller and it does look funny me standing with them.

Bad-Wolf 04-11-2005 09:53

Re: Is size important?

I have never really been bothered by my size. At school I was always the shortest and the smallest! However, now I am 6'2 and 18st! For some reason I am still not bothered by my size! Can not think why but there you go!

Hey Ellie, if it wasn't for us little uns, there'd be no big uns. It would be nice to be a couple of inches taller though, and slimmer!

Re: Is size important?

Yes, size does matter. I am short at 5' 1".......so people are forever looking down on me. When I was younger I used to have quite a complex about it.....but I grew a large personality to make up for my short stature.

I remember when working in theatre......I was tying the gown of one of the general surgeons. He looked down on me and said 'My goodness, the nurses are getting smaller all the time'......so I came back with 'Well, there's many a big apple that's rotten'.......the theatre Sister admonished me for talking like that to a consultant......I told her that it showed a distinct lack of respect for me as an individual.....and when he showed respect for me then I would reciprocate.

I do find it very intimidating when taller people cower over me.

why should you be scared Doug....? I'm only little.

Re: Is size important?

I am the only shrimp in a tall family. I'm 5' 1. My mother wasn't too tall, she was about 5'4, but my dad was 5'11. One of my brothers is 5'10 and the other is 6'. My late husband was 6' 1 and whenever we danced together I could only see his tie :D . I have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. My son is "only" 5'10 (short, to me, compared with his dad) and my older daughter is 5' 2; the younger one is 5' 7. My 6 year old granddaughter is already 4' tall and my grandson is 6' 4. I get a crick in my neck if I talk to him and we're both standing up.

Does it matter? I would love to be about 5' 6 and my younger daughter wishes she was 5' 10 but I've never been "backward at coming forward" and neither are any of my kids.

One of the most attractive men I ever knew (apart from my old man), who used to accompany me on guitar when I was folk-singing, was only 5' 4. I've always liked tall men but he had that certain "something" and, if I hadn't been a happily married woman, - well!

It's personality that counts. :)

Re: Is size important?

i couldnt care less how small or tall i am, im only 5'4 and my fellas 6'4 its a pain looking up at him or when i want a kiss i do actually need a step ladder but when we argue im the biggest as he doesnt like it when i stress.
But the thing that does bother me is my weight! im very slim and am a size 6 can fit into a size 8 and over the moon when its a size 10. how people can say to me i wish i had your figure really need to actually look hard at themselves and really wish they werent my size. i have a very high metabolism and eat like a bloody horse but its impossible for me to put weight on! I find it hard to buy clothes, fit into things that i really want and im not very confident about myself at all. it gets to me so much that when i am shopping for clothes i actually cry as it really upsets me. if i were bigger then i wouldnt bother as much but i just wish people who are bigger than me think themselves as lucky because i certainly am not!

Re: Is size important?

They did prove some time ago that men who were short were not always promoted at work when they should have been and men who were taller were often promoted quicker.

I'm 5'4" but with heels can be anything up to 5'7". I wear trainers or low boots most of the time but when I want to look sexy or when I want to look more powerful (for want of a better word) I always put my heels on. It gives me more confidence and gives more stature - I'm pretty sure I'm not the only woman who does this so there must be some truth in it.

Boo I understand your problem with clothes the mount of times I've come home and burst into tears because something I really wanted wouldn't fit is unreal! It's also annoying when you can't just nip out and buy a cheap pair of standard size jeans off the market, I always have to pay over the odds for clothes but I only take a size 3 in shoes so usually pay less on the whole for these, especially trainers ;). I'm only 5ft and just moved up to a size 8 in the last couple of years. Theres quite a few good shops out there with petite ranges, Dotty P's and Debenhams are excellent. Other than the problems with clothes I love being tiny I always have. I never feel intimidated by taller people, except my daughter who now towers above me at 13 year old :(

Quite amusing with a friend of ours who must be touching 7ft and built like a brick shi....... :D ..... big lad! Went out with them one night and I linked onto his arm as we were walking round the pubs, the sight of us 2, him so big and me so tiny must really have been hysterical!

Re: Is size important?

used to know a (short lady) who told me she loved being small cos she buys childrens sizes which were cheaper, dont know if thats correct cos i'm not much of a shopper-but thats what she told me!

Tinkerbelle 05-11-2005 14:04

Re: Is size important?

Footwear yes Cashy but the lady would have to have had a very boyish figure, childrens clothes don't allow for hips, bum and boobs.

SPUGGIE J 05-11-2005 16:39

Re: Is size important?

Its possible children are growing up earlier nowadays and if the clothing is classed as childrens I dont think there is VAT to pay thus making them cheaper.
