The Big Art Project
Channel 4 has launched a project called The Big Art Project
http://www.channel4.com/culture/micr...art/index.html It's plan is to put six modern art sculptures in six places around the UK. All the sites will be nominated by the public and the designs will be chosen by the public. I'm telling you about this without any bias as I don't know yet whether it's a good thing or a bad thing but whatever it is it will no doubt start to gather steam. The sites chosen will no doubt get a lot of publicity and attention for their areas. I'm also letting you know about this because this will is one of those opportunities that usually goes to the bigger cities - I can see Manchester and Liverpool putting in a bid and once again we'll be ignored as that little green bit that's just above them. People in the cities will no doubt mobilise their teams and be able to put together really good proposals. I can see it being an ideal opportunity for one of the 'Friends of....' groups to gain extra funding and publicity - it would certainly be helpful for a 'Friends of ...' group that was currently going for a huge amount of funding to show to the potential funders that they were really determined to get the best for the park. |
Re: The Big Art Project
Because this is a 'big' art project it will doubtlessly go to a 'big' location.
I am all for the raising of cultural awareness but size-wise Accrington is perhaps out-of-the-way. There are lots of locations here that could take a medium-size sculpture. Oakhill, Hayworth, Broadway. . . . . A large sculpture needs to overlook a busy road and be easily seen without causing accidents through rubber-necking. So a Gormley-Angel sized item could be seen from the M65 (Dunkenhalgh Park?) or the A56 (Peel Park?), say. |
Re: The Big Art Project
shame about the big city syndrome, wouldn't mind one for accy if it was suitable, agree with godfrey we do have sites. can't think what at the moment- but i don't envisage an angel of accrington being suitable. lol

Re: The Big Art Project
a big bronze accy nori brick welcoming people to accrington would be nice..
ok ok a brick dosnt say welcome but its part of our towns heritage edit: yes i know iron was used before some smart alec says but they didnt use bronze lol |
Re: The Big Art Project
It could go in the middle of Broadway.
|
Re: The Big Art Project
As long as it isn't a statue of PB puffing on a cheroot.
|
Re: The Big Art Project
Not a hope of that happening because if it did someone would pinch it for scrap.
|
Re: The Big Art Project
speaking of stupid statues..
that one in blackburn of a woman and child who is reaching down for its teddy bear has to be one of the worst ever has anyone else walked into it on a busy day because it blends into the crowd and you think its someone real lol |
Re: The Big Art Project
Well, Well!! Will wonders never cease, public art that actually does what it was intended to do. Who would have thought it?
|
Re: The Big Art Project
I love that statue in Blackburn and I've never walked into it - yet. But then I tend not to walk into real people either - much.
|

|
Re: The Big Art Project
