Should it be US?
Does anyone else get a bit cross when they call the United States of America, US? Surely that's like calling Great Britain, Great!
People can't be so lazy that they can't say an 'A'! |
Re: Should it be US?
no not really
its like sayin uk... or accy |
Re: Should it be US?
No if we say US instead of USA, it's like calling the United Kingdom - U.
Or calling the town of Accy - TO (Town of) See, it doesn't quite work - so why US? |
Re: Should it be US?
Have a few names for the USA most unprintable. :D
|
Re: Should it be US?
doesn't bother me at all,its just a lazy way of speaking,no big deal!
|
Re: Should it be US?
Why is saying "the US" any different than saying "the UK" or GB? is it not simply a matter of who's hearing it, I would I thought so. To us we understand instinctively that you’re referring to the United States and not the Uzbeki State. But what would an Uzbek think?

Re: Should it be US?
Well, precisely my friend! No, what I mean is that it is America - not the United States - perhaps someone from the US of A could tell us what they think.

Re: Should it be US?
Nothing better to do, so just tried a google on US, the first 2 results were
1. US Senate - the home page of the united states of america senate 2. FirstGov.gov, The US government Official web portal So it looks like they the US think they are so big and powerfull, every one will know who you mean when you say the US |
Re: Should it be US?
Fair enough, I stand corrected. Still doesn't seem right to me but if that's how they refer to themselves then who am I to argue?
|
Re: Should it be US?
I've always thought it a bit arrogant when they call the United States America.
America is two complete continents, with quite a bit in the middle as well, not just one country. |
Re: Should it be US?
I see your point Gayle - United States of where? But equally United Kingdom of what? It should be "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" but nobody can be bothered with that mouthful can they? We think nothing of using the terms "UK" or "United Kingdom" which in their own way ar just as incomplete as "US" or "United States" or even "the States" which I reckon is even worse.

Re: Should it be US?
None of my USAF friends ever referred to "America". They always called it the USA. I don't tell people I live in Britain either, I say England.

Re: Should it be US?
working for an american company I meet those who come to Linlithgow andsome are confused about were they are. Is UK Great Britain or just the country they visit. If they are Scotland they say Scotland not sure about the offices in England but some are unsure. Suppose it comes down to the individual and have yet to find one who objects to "American college" though they might stay quiet as not to offend.
