Another new funding stream - again, any community groups out there are eligible to apply for this money.

Local Heritage Initiative (LHI)
If you wish to investigate, explain or care for your local landscape, landmarks, traditions and culture and know others who wish to do the same, you can apply for a LHI grant . You don't need to be experts. Grants are between £3,000 and £25,000. Over 1200 projects have already been funded through LHI, receiving over 18million between them. Make yours one of the next ones!
LHI was launched in February 2000 and is planned to run until March 2007. The scheme is a partnership. The Countryside Agency administers the scheme, grants are provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund and additional funding comes from Nationwide Building Society.
If you think you may be interested in an LHI grant in the future, please register your interest on their website so they can keep you informed of the LHI programme in the run up to closure. 100% Grants from a minimum of £3,000 to a maximum of £25,000 are available to community groups in England wishing to develop heritage projects.

For your information - I'm currently writing a bid for some money to design school packs to educate about Accrington Pals. There are many other subjects which could be considered.

That’s an excellent idea Gayle; I would like to see more of the town’s history and heritage taught in the local schools, it promotes a sense of community and self worth at an early age; the 10 to 13 age group would probably soak up more information as their sense of imagination is still quite vivid. I believe if you can stimulate the imagination and provoke their emotions you can teach them anything. However, you shouldn’t restrict the subject matter to the glory and the sacrifice that these men made, but more the community that supported and sustained them and perhaps the price that was paid at home as much as on the battlefield. Good Luck with the funding and don’t let the lets hold hands and don’t upset them brigade take over and spoil it. War of any era isn’t nice and if we persist in not teaching the realties of war to our children then the more likely it will happen again so please don’t glorify it. Has a prelude you might consider an end piece with similar subject matter not unlike the ending of Black Adder III. The rage of war, the Blood of souls, and row upon row of lost lovers, fathers and sons.

Where do I get the forms? £25,000 grant to keep the panoptican away sounds cheap to me!

There are hundreds around at any one time. I just picked out two big ones that seemed like they would be good for this area. You can get funds for all sorts of community things - community cohesion projects, refurbishment, garden projects, arts projects, etc. Usually the grants are up to £5,000 but the two I mentioned are far bigger. I'm also currently going for a couple of community cohesion funds that give out grants of up to £70k.

They come around all the time. The Lottery Living Landmarks one is currently inviting bids of up to £25m or £10m but there'll only be one of the £25m ones awarded in the UK. There's also foundations that have funding, Lloyds TSB, Co-op, Esmee Fairbairn etc. These usually give out small amounts up to about £1,000 for small community projects.

I know about it because I subscribe to a mailing that gives me the latest news about what's available.
