Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Listening to the news on the radio this morning it has been suggested that colleges that don't offer the best education for it's students should be:-
*Improved/have further investment/have better teachers. *delete all of the above No, the wise amongst us have decided that they should be closed down, how is that going to improve the situation? After all if they are closed then the students will all somehow have to be found places in the 'better' colleges resulting in overcrowding, lack of resources and an inevitable lowering in standard due to these problems. The end result will be more colleges offering poorer standards of education and so the spiral would continue until, no more colleges? We keep being told that there is not enough investment in training for the skills gap that exists in this country, I cannot see how this is going to help! What we have been promised is Education, Education, Education. For the sake of our young can they please make this a promise that they keep. http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_3_8v.gifhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_3_8v.gifhttp://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_3_8v.gif |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
It's insane isn't it? This is at a time when Hyndburn doesn't really have 'A' level provision at all. We should be fighting to get more colleges and bringing the failing ones up to scratch.

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Why dont schools do 6th form anymore ?
|
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
We in theory could end up with the labourers with degrees. At the end of the day if failing businesses go to the wall then why not a college. Its too easy for them to blame the govenment or local education authorities. The schools In Scotland provide 6th form education and the system here is reckoned to be better than that in England and Wales but thats another argument. The other argument could be that the secondary schools are failing pupils and the college because of the education the students get.

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Some schools still do 6th form. My son's friend is in the 6th form at Haslingden High School. But saying that i don't know of any others.

You're right there Gayle, i was just replying in general to jimmi5bellies in general. Not long ago St Christophers was talking about introducing a 6th form, anybody any idea on that or has it been forgotten.

Oops wrote in general twice, sorry.

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
A sixth form would relieve presure on some colleges and as the students know the school might be more comfortable.

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Does Accrington & Rossendale College not provide A-level facilities, plus GCSE if needed

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Errmm pass on that aint been near the college in 18 years.
|
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
It mostly provides vocational courses and degree modules. I don't think it does 'A' levels anymore although it might now do a few as evening courses. I'm pretty sure it doesn't do a sixth form kind of thing.

To be honest, I started getting worried when the government started talking about the 3 'R's. I didn't know what they were talking about, and eventually had someone spell it out to me (pardon the pun).

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
The lack of sixth form/A levels in Hyndburn means that students have to travel outside of the area to continue their education. They then get more accustomed to travelling outside of the area for other things - shopping, clubbing etc. Shops and clubs in Hyndburn suffer and close! The students then are more amenable to going outside of the area for further education, degrees etc and that's how the area loses all it's bright young things and at that point business and industry suffers in Hyndburn. It's a knock on effect!
I'm not saying that we should batten down the hatches and shut down the borders to keep all our youth in Hyndburn, I'm just saying that we shouldn't FORCE them in to leaving which is what we are doing now! |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
I wonder how much money the students spend out of town because their educational life is out of town?
|
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
I would say quite a lot Spuggie. At lunchtime alone they would buy sandwiches, burgers, chips, etc or even go to the pub (if of course, they were old enough). Then what about buying that new dress or shirt for the weekend night out - best time to buy it is at lunchtime. You need a new book for your course, or simply for bedtime reading - when would you buy it.......... and so it goes on.
Your friends are from all different areas of East Lancashire but the one central place you have in common is where you go to college - so where is the best night out? You walk past the theatre, pub, sports hall every day that advertises events, so where are you most likely to spend your free time? Some of the most thriving towns in the country are ones that cater for students. |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
If they were in Accy and Accy had the facilities there would be benifits for all. It would not be just educational either as to cater for students more businesses would be here = more jobs = more spending power = more money in the coffers.

Couldn't agree more - it's precisely what Accrington needs and it's alarming that it doesn't have it. |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Just found St Christopher's web site, they to realise the lack of A-level facilities and as has been posted previous hope to do something about it.
http://www.idonohoe.com/st%20christo...-web/index.asp Note the school Title - Specialist Technology College Just found Hollins web site as well - Specialist Technology College http://www.hollins.lancsngfl.ac.uk/i...nology-college# |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
Mmmmm - I'm a little wary of these 'specialist' colleges, and not really sure they're a good idea. Everyschool wants to be a Technology College because that's what the most government money seems to be going to. So, it's in their interests to go for Technology status. As you've shown by the two sites you found that's two 'specialist technology' schools within a hop, skip and jump from each other. Are there any schools in Hyndburn going for the Arts or Humanities or even Business?
Plus, a discerning parent who wants the best for their child would want a specialist school in that child's chosen subjects. However, what child, at the age of 11, knows what will be their chosen subject? So parents could end up making the wrong choice for their child and ultimately damaging their future career. I know these schools do cater for other subjects but their really nailing their colours to the mast by saying they are focusing on technology. It doesn't bode well for the less technologically minded, does it? Also, it can separate friends at that age when you really need as many friends as you can get. They might be successful in GCSE results but unless a town has a proper spread of 'specialist' colleges some pupils will undoubtedly suffer! |
Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
My sister is at St Christophers and they live across the road. The building which used to be Moorhead's Queens building has now been knocked down. They are hoping to use that site as a 6th form college for A level studies. At the moment a lot of our youngsters are going to Blackburn and Burnley in order to study for A levels. My sister is currently looking at St Mary's College in B'burn, it would be great for the town if they developed this site as a 6th form. I just hope that they don't sell it off and turn it into yet another housing estate.:D

Re: Education, Education, erm' Just close them down
I would assume that the land is owned by LCC, if they wish to sell it to a developer then it could end up a housing estate. Then again if LCC keep it then it could end up a rubbish dump...:D
