First fairy grotto.

There is a house in Oswaldtwistle near the Co-op, that has been trimmed up for Christmas for over a week.

I know retailers like to remind us that we should be spending money by decorating their windows by early November, but this is ridiculous.

Are there any more houses near you already festooned with fairy lights, trees, and Santas?

I'm sorely tempted to play their game and post them a Happy Easter card through their door.

No I'm a traditionalist.

I decorate on Christmas Eve.

This year I'm using shrunken heads as my theme, so don't sit still to long Teabag or you just might find a sprig of holly sticking out of an orifice.;)

That's not very nice, people die in fires.

On a similar line, do be careful with candles this Christmas, they can do a lot of damage if you are not careful.

Making silly jokes when children die in fires every Christmas isn't funny.

I'd deduct karma from you, but that would be childish.

well the earlier they put up christmas decorations the more chance their is of having a christmas fire so the answer is dont be an idiot and leave christmas to christmas time therefore making the period that christmas decoration are up shorter and reducing the risk :p

I wasn't trying to be funny. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks electrical fires aren't a good way to show people they are decorating too early.

He didn’t say anything about children dieing in Christmas fires. I think fireman would confirm that it’s foolish to leave naked flames and paper based decorations unattended and or children unsupervised at anytime. The same could be said of over doing the Christmas lights and overloading the standard domestic circuits. I don’t think anyone is that stupid to make jokes of such a distressing subject? I can tell you that a close friend died two years ago in a Christmas fire and five years before that a daughter of a friend lost a child and had another badly burned and scared by the same fire. She herself was also badly injured.

No, I think it just another example of one’s opinion being rammed down the throats of others. If someone challenges you or try’s to alleviate a difficult situation you go on the rampage. Maybe a little thought to the fact that not everyone’s opinion will agree with yours.

If I give Karma it’s because someone (in no particular order) lightened my day and made me smile, help someone who’s struggling or as been unfairly targeted by idiots or otherwise or has posted something that deserved it on merit. Whatever the reason it’s my choice and over the months you have benefited more than most for all of the aforementioned reasons so stop cribbing about karma..

I happened to be in Rishton this morning, at 5:45am. At the bottom of Hermitage Street there was a half-mad old woman perched on top of a ladder to position an illuminated Father Christmas and a Snowman on the top of her bay window.

Christmas Spirit is one thing, that was just plain insanity.

Yup a family round the back of us have got all their Christmas decs up and have had them up since 6th November. I find it really annoying that I'm going to have to look at these things for ages! It would be OK if they had done it tastefully :( nope OTT and very tacky!!

I do totally agree that it’s madness and quite unnecessary this early in the year. It’s much more pleasing to see these things appear in the two weeks before Christmas and disappear the day after. I’m not Joking………..

Maybe there should be a bye law against it. Think of the poor parents who's kids decide crimbo is here and give mum and dad a hard time.

Ahh, yes. Lest we forget, there is those arch offenders against taste and decency; HBC. Who have managed to embarass the borough for the second year in a row by leaving the Christmas illuminations up outside Accrington Town Hall. They have a very odd interpetation of "Thirty years of service to the people of Hyndburn". Very odd indeed. One quite often wonders whether they speak the same language; they certainly do not seem to inhabit the same planet as the rest of us miserable mortals.

Doug 15-11-2005 20:11

Re: First fairy grotto.

I was having a look at them last night in fact. I was wondering what they’re going to look like in a week or two when they switch on. I love going to Ambleside or Lancaster at Christmas where the lights tend to be beautifully simple single and plan white bulbs drawn across the streets or festooned in and around the bared branches of trees. I noted that Broadway is slipping further into ill planned and dismal blandness, what a great pity that such an opportunity was wasted, my opinion. I like the area around and in front of the town all and for the life of me I can’t see what HBC thought they were going to achieve. Going back to the Accy Christmas lights, I would have thought that the costs of on site servicing, repair and or replacement and the health and safety implications of the lads working on them would be greater than the cost of taking them down, servicing and storing them safely over the winter and summer month. They might well end up replacing them altogether.

SPUGGIE J 15-11-2005 20:16

Re: First fairy grotto.

There has to be brains and commen sense for the council;

"I would have thought that the costs of on site servicing, repair and or replacement and the health and safety implications of the lads working on them would be greater than the cost of taking them down, servicing and storing them safely over the winter and summer month. They might well end up replacing them altogether."

Unfortunately HBC has still to find the back of the que to get a bit of these atributes.

Doug 15-11-2005 20:28

Re: First fairy grotto.

But the level of argument for and against HBC over the past twelve months suggests that someone somewhere must have an inkling of common sense? Not all of them are elected individuals, what are the civil servant types doing, surly at least one of them can workout the economics of the problem. It’s not going to be that expensive to deploy two lads, a hydraulic lifting platform and a big box to put them in is it. Once a sparks as turned the juice off anyone with a Health and Safety certificate, driving licence and a screw driver could get on with the job.

SPUGGIE J 15-11-2005 20:31

Re: First fairy grotto.

;) Wonder if thesecontracts the council has for services are part of the problem? If they wont take them down now what are they going to do if a scallywag with a good catty lets rip.

There again, Blackpool puts miles of the blessed things up every year and has no problems with them. As Doug suggests, it is hardly rocket science!

If I were a cynic. "What? No. Never!" I hear you shout. And I must agree with you, but let us, for the sake of argument, pretend that I was. As a cynic I would say that if anyone were looking for a reason why there was not enough money to remove the Christmas Illuminations one need look no futher than the recent increase in councillors remuneration. What was it, a twenty six percent increase in allowances? Coming at a time when our glorious leader-ette is wailing and gnashing his teeth over how strapped for cash the borough is, it stikes me as somehow slightly less than convincing.

Re: First fairy grotto.

Well I have my tree up. Mainly to shut the bl@@dy kids up at the weekend. Every two minutes " mum can we put the tree up" " mum when we putting the tree up" and in the end I gave in.

To be quite honest i think it is up to individual preference when we put decorations up. Some people do it very early, and others do it quite late.

Ginger goes absolutely mad every single year, with lights all over the outside of the house. He has done this since the children were very small.
Every year without fail I get people with young children looking in the house for 20 minutes at a time at our house at Christmas.
One lady across the road, her little girl won't go to bed until she has put her little girls coat and hat on and brought her to look at our house. Then the little girl will go to bed. Cars drive past and stop, usually I forget that the lights are there and end up saying to ginger, " what the bloody hell are they looking at":o Only to be reminded that we are living in a grotto.

I suppose it's what makes us all different!!!
