What's happening on Broadway now?

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned but.......

What the heck is going on on Broadway?!!!???

I've just been down town this afternoon and the tarmac has been covered with something masquerading as concrete but despite there being fencing around it there are footprints and tiretracks all over the place. The concrete itself is so thin that in the area which has been left for people to walk over towards the Arndale entrance the tarmac is showing through.

The tarmac was bad enough but this looks appalling now.

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

Not sure, but I work with a lady whose husband works with a drains company and they have been laying drains between JJB and the entrance, so could be this, but they will have to relay I am told.

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

We know Peter Britcliffe reads Accy Web, from comments in his 'giving up the fags' blog, has he perhaps noted our comments re: the tarmac?

The concrete looks more appalling than the black stuff.

Forgive my ignorance, but is tarmac usually used as a base for concrete? I think it looks like expensive panic measures, to try and mask what is begining to look like an almighty cock up.

Apparently there is going to a final layer laid on top to add that finishing touch.

No, hardcore is a base for concrete, tarmac is layed though in 2 or 3 layers, each layer is a finer grade so it is possible they are going to top it.
I went past on Saturday and there was a guy there with a pneumatic drill chiseling a groove in the new tarmac, they wouldn't normally do this if it was the top coat but we are talking about Accrington here

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

Top coat? It's already on a level with the paving slabs so any mor coats and it's going to be higher than the paving slabs.

Also if that concrete keeps wearing off at the rate it has done today it's going to get washed into that little drainage channel and bung it up. Then can you imagine what will happen if it freezes after a downpour?

Welcome to the Broadway Icerink!

Hey, maybe that's the idea. Maybe HBC were jealous of Blackburn having an Ice Arena so decided Broadway could double up.

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

I agree the tarmac was level with the surround, and the grade looked like a finished surface to me.

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

what i dont understand is how they can make such a mess of such a small area..

in salou spain where i stayed recently the whole town was cobbled apart from the roads of course and there wasnt one raised cobble in sight or a dirty patch of tarmac

yes i know its a tourist location but considering it is mainly british tourists i didnt notice chewing gum stuck on the floor etc either

Quote:

yes they are put there for shoppers to walk into just incase they dont manage to cripple you when you slip on the orange cobbles when leaving the arndale

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

Yes the white concrete on top of the black tarmac, has been covered in red grit.

It's a bit like the red sands at Teignmouth in Devon, and should certainly encourage people into town next summer to lie down and sunbathe, which will be easier than waiting for a place to sit on one of the very few benches.

Depends on what they stick up there. How about a set of pillories to put the council in so we can throw rotten food at them. ;)

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

The new 'red beach' could well bring tourists to the town. HBC are trying to turn the wind tunnel, that is the forever shady bit of Blackburn Road, into a place full of continental style pavement cafes.

After enjoying a skiiny latte, people can meander round the corner and sunbathe on the red grit. Will topless sunbathing be allowed, if we are truly going to be continental?

Fat chance they will have them in wooly overcoats and themals so as not to upset others. :)

I must admit it is looking slightly better than it was. I've just returned from Accrington, and now some more of the 'street furniture' is in it's looking better. Some of the benches now even have back rests on.

The trees are planted as well, though I'm not sure if planting them in the middle of a cold snap was such a wise idea, they are already looking a bit ravaged and moth eaten.

I thought it was lazyness so the jokes about councils and light bulbs is true then. ;)

Maybe they will take them down this year to avoid the flak. Besides a beack with coloured lighting mike give some the idea of an all year party.
I certainly dont want reminding in March about Christmas past now or future.

Someone has sprayed the area with silly string......and it has stuck to the gravel. Not the look that the designers ahd in mind I'm sure.

Gayle 26-11-2005 22:42

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

Yes Margaret, it's covered in the stuff isn't it. That happened on Thursday night at the light switching on thing. There were a couple of stalls selling silling string and flashy light things (one can only assume they had got licences from the council to be there). Some teenagers had bought the silly string and were doing what you do with silly string - covering each other and the floor.

As for my opinion on the actual street itself - I think it's dull, unimaginative and boring, boring, boring but at least they got the thing finished.

Has anybody been in town first thing this morning???? I went down mid morning and our red beach was covered in puddles, there are still one or two there now. The water has nowhere to drain, all we need is a good deluge then a sharp frost and we'll have our very own outdoor ice rink..:)

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

I hadn't been down accy for a few years until last week and desite everything that has been put on this thread I actually do think it's an immense improvement. I do agree with Lettie though, there were a fair few puddles to be avoided on the new red beach! Which I'm sure could have been levelled off a lot better and yes the council buildings shown on the right of micks pics do let the area down. But all in all I am pretty impressed.

garinda 08-12-2005 11:37

Re: What's happening on Broadway now?

I was there on Tuesday, a sunny day when it hadn't rained, and there were lots of big puddles on the red gravel, and the marble seats were also covered in water, ensuring your piles would be damp as well as cold if you chose to sit down.
