How competitive are you?

I've just been bowling with Chris, my Mother in Law and the kids. Now some people might think that it is a good idea to let the kids win to encourage them. There might be others who think it's a good idea to keep on the Mother in Law's good side by letting her win. NOT ME! I like to win!

.......and I DID!!!!!!

Gayle - I never ever play a game I don't want to win......what would be the point?

If i've no chance of winning I don't play, if I'm not winning I will cheat, if I lose god help the person who beat me, now back to the arcade I have some unfinished business with Grannyclaret.

I hate loosing.

I suppose one day I might actually do it, but then I'd just have to cope with the consequences if it ever happens.;)

Re: How competitive are you?

I don’t play games as such although I use to when I was younger. I don’t do things to compete in the traditional sense, like yesterday I knew that the conditions where not the best and certainly not in my favour, but I went on regardless, I got a bollocking for not when I got home but I find it difficult to back off from situations that basically come down to battles of will. A couple of years ago I set out against myself to stop smoking after 30 years and won, apart from two or three drags (best I ever had) last year I’ve never smoked since. I don’t think it’s very sensible or big, in fact it’s stupid, I’ve gone head long into situations that I shouldn’t have and not backed off when I should have, but I am talking about physical situations. Things like arguments I have little time for, if there’s something to be said get it done, puffing up and flashing your tail feathers just leaves people looking like silly. I don’t like people who play the game and cry foul when it doesn’t go their way, or people who resort to back handed tactics or bullying just to get the upper hand. However, I have a lot of time for those who fight on in the face of it and still maintain an air of dignity whatever the adversity. They don’t have to win to come out on top. They win regardless due to the spirit in which they competed.

Is it wise or brave to go up mountains when conditions are bad? Very often it's the mountain rescue people who sadly end up looking like the loosers.

I absolutely hate losing but if it does happen I don't sulk, I just apply myself better the next time. I definitely DO NOT let anybody win - even the kids. :D

My dad taught me how to play chess at a young age and never let me win. I have never forgotten that great feeling when I actually beat him for the first time after hundreds of games.

That's a really exciting time in your life, the first time you beat a parent at something.

It's also quite sad, as it makes them less God like and more human.

In a lot of case’s you’d be right. I carry a survival kit that allows me to overnight and walk off a Mountain the next day if necessary, Everybody who need to know where I am going as a copy of my route in detail and what emergency profile I’ll take in the event of an incident. Other than accidents, I carry the means to do what’s needed for 48 hours most of the kit I carry is intended for people who might need assistance in an emergency rather than for me. The main issue of important is that I am fit for the purpose and properly equipped for the conditions. The fact that I go on when the conditions are bad is mainly because I know that I can get myself out of trouble if I get myself into it. Standing orders for me not returning after 12 hours is to inform Mountain Rescue where I’ve gone, what kit, Fluids and food supplies I have with me and after an emergency which route I’ll make my decent from. By prior arrangement people will only come looking for me if I have not made contact after 24 hours. In the event of injury I have the means to summon help if I need it. I have a great respect for the Mountain Rescue Teams particularly the Langdale, Patterdale and the Keswick Teams all of whom receive my support.

One small point, the mountain rescue teams are all volunteers and exist to promote mountain safety and to help those in distress. They don’t want to stop people walking or climbing in most conditions, but are happy to assist those who do go out in bad conditions so long as they have made every effort to safe guard their own safety to be best of there ability. The all point of going up a mountain is to test your own ability and skills, if people have neither and are not prepared to learn how to be safe in a range of conditions then they should stay at home. Just one other point, when I set out on the mountain the sun was shining; there was no wind and the sheep where happy in the fields. 9 times out of ten the conditions will change when you’re already up there, it’s how you work to minimise the risk factors that determines the outcome.

Re: How competitive are you?

Doug I agree with all your points. I have had the pleasure of working along side Rossendale Fell and Mountain and Bolton Mountain Rescue on several jobs and find that they have a very good way of working to get injured people down to the waiting Ambulance(s). If everyone going hill walking did the same as you there could be less call-outs for those groups. Suppose I could say the same about people that have bumps in their car or fallen downstairs and been injured in that it would reduce the workload for me and my colleagues but cant see that happening can you?

As to the main part of th thread I taught both my sons to play chess and boy did they lap-it-up when they beat me lol
