Death In the family!!!!!

I have just made a very grim discovery. My sons pet hamster has died.

I can't bring myself to tell him, and I am sat here hoping he doesn't go wanting to get him out of the cage for his daily play.

I know I'm a wimp, but, I will have to wait for my mum to finish work now at 8oclock, so she can come round and delivery the bad news to Zack, then we will prepare a funeral:o .

Who said having kids was easy!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is a silly question, but , do they wake up easily when they are hibernating??

You see, I thought he was at first, So I dragged him round the cage, but, he still didn't wake up:o so i think he's dead!!!

No he is deffo dead!!!!!!! I just shook the cage again, and he is in the same position................no sign of life. If he is hibernating, it is his own fault, cos he is getting buried alive tonight:o

I don't know if they hibernate or not Slinky.... I don't think they do but I'm not a hamster expert... If you think he's dead then he probably is. At least if you leave him there until Saturday......you'll know one way or the other..:D

Sometimes hamsters do appear dead but are actually alive. Even poking them doesn't wake them. Put your fingers on its belly to see if theres a pulse.

my ex once thought her hamster was dead and her brother put it in the oven and after a few seconds it came tro life

turns out it was hibernating so yes it can take a lot to wake them up

the above story may not be true though as it has been since found that my ex is full of sh1t so its hard to know truth from fiction lol

if it feels cold and is rock hard like a stone then rigamortise has set in and its dead

ps:

do not put in oven as i never did find out what gas mark setting was used or how long it was cooking for lol

Re: Death In the family!!!!!

Years ago, my daughter's turn to bring the hamster home from school. One morning my wife came upstairs Telling me quietly the Cat had got the hamster.
Urgent action required, hamster put into it's nest box with just a little showing. When my daughter got up over to feed boris, my wife said for her to leave it alone as it seemed to be hibernating.
Wife takes daughter out visiting so that I can take the corpse to the local pet shop & try to get a substitute. Boris had been white with brown patches
so getting a perfect match chances next to nil.
Fortunately the pet shop had a hamster but different pattern & much smaller, it will have to do.
Daughter comes home over to cage, What's happened to Boris? What do you mean I asked innocently, His patches have moved & he's alot smaller (it's a good job hamsters aren't very big or she might have noticed he has also changed sex!).
Well, said I sometimes when hamsters hibernate they shed their skin which can make them seem smaller & the new skin changes colour. She was happy with that, went out to play.
The following Monday my wife takes boris back to
school and explains in confidence to teacher, teacher says boris was an old hamster & when he died they weren't going to replace him so we shouldn't have bothered.

I can not stand dead animals. When our pet Hamster died I could not face the thought of picking it up even with a pair of gloves!

I picked up the cage, put it in the car and drove to the tip where I chucked it!

I think the hamster and the cage got buried pretty quick!:D

Re: Death In the family!!!!!

Just out of interest, is the creature a Dwarf or a Syrian hamster? If its the former, then it's dead: if its the latter, then it is possible it could be hibernating. You need to look at it for a good hour and look for signs of its little whiskas moving. If they don't move, then bin it and get another & say that after hibernation hamsters look a bit different than before.

It could be hibernation. A lot of people bury live hamsters because of this. If it starts to stink and decay, you know it really is dead ! Ewwwwww

Well I broke the bad news to Zack this morning. His first reaction was to say " yeah right mum whateva!" My kids know my sense of humour, and he honestly thought I was joking!!!:o

Then I think he could tell by the look on my face I wasn't joking. He went to the cage, and, came back with tears running down his face..........Its gone.

I cheered him up a little bit by saying I would go and choose another one with him this weekend. So yes, I am hamster shopping this weekend:mad: .

Well it's the same every year everything left until the last minute then just before the celebrations begin you end up with an unexpected expense!
If you had planned it better you wouldn't have this problem.

In the new year get in touch with me and I'll sign you up for my Christmas hampster club it will only cost you a few pence a week however if you pay a 20% deposit up front you can have a discount on the 'fairground goldfish emergency replacement Service.'
