Well known
How many of you have met famous people and who was they and how did you meet them?
Just a few weeks ago bobby ball came into our shop just before he went into the jungle, a few people found him rather grumpy!! Today Colleen Nolan came into the shop she looked like she had lost some weight and was lovely very chatty. What are your claims to fame and who were the people you have met and what did you think of them? |
Re: Well known
Princess Diana-lovely
James Hewitt- horrid. Bill Clinton- funny. Mike Tyson-charming. Paul O'Grady- hilarious but shy one on one. David Bowie-reserved. Brian Ferry-flirty. Ronnie Corbert- hysterical. The Queen-little and nice. Ian McKellen-lovely. Peter Ustinov-caring. Boy George-mental but nice. Francois Mitterand- nice. Rupert Everett-no comment. There are loads more I've met either through work or socially when I lived in London. It's funny I've just come back from the chiropodist and she was after gossip about who I knew in London. The most shocking tale I can't tell, although Harwood Red got it out of me on Saturday. My first day at work in London I met Princess Anne, the exiled King of Greece, and Audrey Hepburn. The novelty soon wore off and you realise that famous people are just the same as the rest of us, good, bad or somewhere inbetween. |
Re: Well known
cannon and ball opened up variety video on broadway i met them then i think it was around 1982
met quite a few people but my proudest moment was telling worzel gummage ( john pertwee) to go F*** himself after arrogantly telling my little brother he dosnt give autographs because he cant write when he attended the accy carnival. back in them days no one was allowed to make my little brother cry except me  he was a crap doctor who anyway lol |

He stopped for a chat and was lovely. I have met Celia Imrie (Acorn Antiques) and Phil Cool at work, both lovely and Phil Cool donated several tickets to us so that some of the staff could go to his show.:D |
Re: Well known
Ooooh, forgot to include Peter Shilton who I met in a bar in Leicester when I was out with my cousin. He was ever so slightly drunk but polite...:)

I also met Jack Straw not much to tell & Richard Wilson who was extremely funny |
Re: Well known
OK here's my list. it doesn't glitter in quite the same way as G's but, then, I always was a bit of a shrinking violet.
HM The Queen, though I wasn't actually presented, she did smile. Prince Edward - Dull! Edward Fox - I nearly knocked him into a hole in the road. Roy Strong - operatic and ridiculous. Geoffrey Bernard - lovely, sweet and polite despite being very drunk. David Hockney - I could not stop laughing. The late Basil Hume - one of the few Catholic Prelates I have any respect for. Mel Calman - cartoonist - odd, dry and quite witty. Rudolph Nureyev - no comment, not now, not ever! The American chap who did the voice over for the Heineken adverts, name escapes me. Always wore a black stetson hat. Glennis Kinnock - snootier than the Duchess of Argyl. Jonathan Miller - clever but bigoted. Dennis Norden - sharper than I expected. Timothy West - likes women with large appendages, apparently. John Mortimer - prefers his women to be a deal stricter, allegedly. Kenny Everett - lovely and brilliant. Freddy Mercury - couldn't stand him, the rest of the band were nice though. Oh and the very late Violet Carson. |
Re: Well known
Lol, go on share the Nureyev story as you did with me.;)
Totally agree about the little prick Roy Strong. We had an argument about a Missonni sweater. I won. Expert my arse. |
Re: Well known
Freddie, Kenny? What pubs did you go to in London? Perhaps I've seen you after all. Did you wear full leather?
David Hockney picked me up in Armarni in Milan and took me for tea and things. We have so much in common why don't we get on better?;) |

I met the band Match Box back stage at the Guild Hall in Preston.
We saw Fizz out of Corrie on Preston Market. Also Vicky Entwistle who plays Janice in the old Mcdonalds. We didn't speak to her because she looked like she was in a terrible mood. |
Re: Well known
As a child in very early 80's I used to swim with Duncan Goodhew and Sharon Davies but obviously was nowhere near as good.
Had some footy coaching from (now I get mixed up) either Jack or Bobby Charlton in Mid 80's. Have met various bands, singers etc during my time at KGH but my fave was Robbie Williams who gave me a kiss on the cheek and when I asked did he still moonie at every chance he could get, he answered by duly dropping his pants!!! :o So you could say Robbie Williams dropped his pants for me :D will add any if they come to mind!!! |
Re: Well known

Re: Well known
Eamon Holmes - getting heckled by a pile of drunken irish preston north end supporters well he was wearing man utd shirt and scarf he was heckled all the way from manchester to belfast and we were delayed! It was funny! If though he'd have had a laugh with them and treated it as a joke he wouldnt have got heckled all the way - he stuck his nose up in the air and totally ignored everybody a little kid asked for his autograph and he said no that made the hecklers worse!
John Barnes and Phil Neal also going to Belfast they were going on a training session with some kids. Ted Robbins comes into were i work sometimes. I've met a whole pile of labour mp's over the years. Even got a photo of me shaking tony blairs hand. |
Re: Well known
Les Dawson – in St Annes when I was about 10 - he was trying to have a quiet night with his family and don't think he appreciated my Grandad telling him jokes!
Ted Robbins - funny and barking mad Sally Naden - equally barking but lovely Jim Bowen - equally barking, must be something about working for Radio Lancs Eamonn Holmes – took part in TV Scrabble (before you laugh I made it to the final but just lost out) Naomi Cleaver – TV style guru - lovely and down to earth, not like I expected Have interviewed Keith Duffy – very charming Dave Spikey – so funny, I asked one question and he just talked at me for half an hour Joe Brown - bit grumpy Marty Wilde - lovely and happy to chat about absolutely anything Brendan Shine - also very charming - must be the Irish thing! Anthony Wilson as he now likes to call himself - Plus, quite a lot of bands around in Manchester during the mid 80s (too many to mention) – part of the Hacienda scene! |

I went to school with Vicky Entwistle(same class) Told Ted Robbins jokes and made him laugh Met Phyllis from Corrie years ago(Blue rinse!) Numerous others that esacpe me at the moment. TBH I find celebs to be in one of two camps, either genuine and nice or stuck up attention seeking prats. I would take no qualms in telling the latter what I thought either |
Re: Well known
Errrr can someone explain why I would lose karma for saying I swam with Duncan Goodhew??? No name left and to be quite honest quite an offensive message left aswell... so to whoever left it...

Re: Well known
Not really met many celebs. Just trying to think who I have.
Hmmm .... Yes, John Pertwee when it was the carnival. Vicky Entwistle in ASDA - miserable madame is that! All the Most Haunted crew, Evette Fielding, (the gorgeous) Karl Beattie, Richard Felix and Derek Ackorah. Alot of the Man Utd team. Beckham seemed a nice guy. The only one who had me a little star struck was Teddy Sheringham, he's absolutely gorgeous off screen, I was really surprised and Dwight Yorks smile I could have sat and stared at for hours. Is that it? ........... I think it is! If I've mised anyone they can't have made a good impression. |

Re: Well known
I see a lot when I'm travelling, famous people seem to hang around a lot in airports.
The only famous person I've probably met and had a conversation with is Howard Marks, most people probably have never heard of him, but I had and I'd just read his book about a month or so before so I felt like I knew him. If I remember rightly we where both delayed in brussels thanks to that old pants airline that was sabena. I have since met him twice here in moscow at a couple of bars... I have vague memories of meeting dennis taylor and a few others at a snooker tournament at Hyndburn sports centre.. And there is another one, but my memory is pants so I can't remember the name, some famous american rock bloke headlined at a festival in moscow and he came to my local first and we ended up with tickets to the mosh pit! |
Re: Well known
Is Howard Marks the reformed Welsh drug dealer? If it is I read his autobiography and it was brilliant. A very interesting life.
|
Re: Well known
David Essex- used to live round the corner.

I met loads! Arthur Askey...So funny. Dennis Waterman..briefly. Anthony Wilson....Rindys mate!! Oh yes and once spent the night with Jason Karl from Most haunted. |
Re: Well known

Re: Well known
I met Jasper Carrot before he became famous, when he was doing the Folk Clubs. I also knew the actor Ian McShane, when we were both children, as my dad was friendly with his dad, the footballer Harry McShane.
Older members may remember a BBC radio sports reporter, in the 1950s, called Tom Naseby who had a wonderful "dark brown" voice. My dad knew him and he came to our house one New Year. I was so disappointed that this man, whose voice made him sound like a film star, was short, fat and balding. He looked a lot like Norris Cole from Corrie - but fatter. In my job I met a lot of the actors who were in "Brookside" on Channel 4 (Barry Grant was a sweetheart and "Sinbad" became almost a mate) and I was on "Good Morning" terms with Bobby Charlton when he used to live in our village. We have Matthew Corbett (Sooty) here now and he's a nice bloke. I also stood next to Johnny Briggs (Mike Baldwin) in our post office when he lived here. He's a lot better looking than on the telly, but very short! My daughter had a brief conversation with Jimmy Tarbuck in the Trafford Centre, when she accidentally elbowed him in the gut, and my son knows Stuart Hall very well. Dennis Taylor used to live 3 doors away from one of my brothers. My biggest claim to fame is my mother's cousin's cousin. She was the actress Patrice Wymore and was married to Errol Flynn. Unfortunately, I never met her. :D |
Re: Well known
When I lived in Scotland the first Christmas I was working for a jewellers and I sold a Gucci ring to Colin and Justin, that camp pair of interior designers from Channel 5. The following year I was managing an adult store and they came in to purchase an anotomically correct replica of a porn star's appendage, complete with handy suction attachment on the base. They did laugh when I reminded them of this compared with their purchase the previous year.
I was a little disappointed, when I recently watched a programme were they did up Christine and Neil Hamilton's flat, not to see what they'd bought happily swinging, suction cupped onto the window of the pairs lovely home. 'Who lives in a house with a twelve inch phallus stuck to the window? David it's over to you.' |
Re: Well known
better stuck to the window garinda ,than somewere else lol..ouch!!!

Re: Well known
Wow this is a name dropping thread, all these famous people :) I have spent a night drinking with Billy Connolly, the next day was .................I also had a couple of swift ones with Mike Harding an up and coming comedy act that may take off one day.....he wrote Napoleons retreat from Wigan before we went to the bar and continued editing as we drank, as you can imagine it was a funny night. Good old folk scene days.

Re: Well known
Ouch! - I have to say I have met a lot over the years, partly because such a lot of them live in London, and partly because of the job.
My daughter went out with a Beastie Boy - Adroc (Adam) for a while, then with a well-known DJ, then with Flavor Flav - they had to hide her on the tour bus because they were a Black Power group and it wouldn't do for FF to have a white, red-haired, girlfriend. Both of them were very polite and charming, very different from the stage image. Also, my daughter used to work for Prince Charles in polo, so got a nod from him and a smile from Diana (whom the polo girls loved, because she was so ordinary and nice). Sort of met Princess Anne when she asked me to hold her horse's foot as I was walking past her at a horse do. Met George Best in the Phene Arms a few times, later came to know his second wife, Alex, very well. My ex used to work for Columbia Pictures, so met quite a number of people at their dos - even Rock Hudson once! And, of course, I also know Garinda! |
