I bet you won't turn your nose up at the NHS when the paramedics drag you out of a smashed car and take you to a NHS hospital to save your life.

If he's fat, drinking and smoking when he has the accident I fear it will be classed as self-inflicted so it will be left to the Fire Brigade to just sweep him into a tidy pile by the side of the road!

Not knocking it that way as I might have to go for a brain scan and it is quicker through private than the NHS. I waited 3 months last time and dont fancy another 3 month wait.

So when are we going to charge all those people who get run over and need hospital treatment because they stepped off the pavement without looking? That's self-inflicted, if you like.

My nephew died of a virulent form of lung cancer at the age of 46, never having smoked in his life. My cousin is 80, has smoked at least 20 a day since she was 18, and is the picture of health.

What about industrial illnesses? - should we refuse treatment to ex-miners who develop silicosis, because they knew the risks?

I can see the point of saying to someone that they will not get a particular operation unless they make a lifestyle change - in some circumstances, as Lettie says, it is self-defeating. George Best managed it though, he got a nice new liver and proceeded to cane it to death.
