So when are we going to charge all those people who get run over and need hospital treatment because they stepped off the pavement without looking? That's self-inflicted, if you like.
My nephew died of a virulent form of lung cancer at the age of 46, never having smoked in his life. My cousin is 80, has smoked at least 20 a day since she was 18, and is the picture of health. What about industrial illnesses? - should we refuse treatment to ex-miners who develop silicosis, because they knew the risks? I can see the point of saying to someone that they will not get a particular operation unless they make a lifestyle change - in some circumstances, as Lettie says, it is self-defeating. George Best managed it though, he got a nice new liver and proceeded to cane it to death. |
