Not quite sure what calendar the Romans were using at the time, but the Jews who were of course the people that Jesus belonged to would count the years using the Moon (I forget what name is given to this method). This is also the reason Easter is at a different time every year as it always is follows the Jewish heast of the Passover!

Well ok we'll let you off from taking cloth, but when does the Christian calendar start, with the birth or death, and doesn't that leave a thirty odd year gap?
