Are YOU a Minority??
 

I am White, European, Male and Christian. That makes me a minority - so why do I not have the P.C. Brigade banging on my door offering to help me?

If we could shrink the earth's population down to a village of precisely 100 people, with all the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look approximately like the following.....

There would be:
57 Asians
21 Europeans
14 from the Western Hemisphere (both North and South)
8 Africans
52 would be female
48 would be male
70 would be nonwhite
30 would be white
89 would be heterosexual
11 would be homosexual
71 would be non-Christian
24 would be Christian
5 people would have no concept of religion
6 people would possess 59% of the entire world's wealth
All 6 of them would be from the United States

80 would live in substandard housing
70 would be unable to read and write
50 would be suffering from malnutrition
2 would be near death
I do not know the origin of these figures so please bear in mind that the U.S.A. consider the far East as "Asian."

A quarter of them would be Chinese, if you sub-divide the Asian figure.

In a hundred years time the six people that own 59% of the world's wealth may not be living in America, they will probably be called Chung and live in Beijing.

Well, according to your list, Busman, I'm definitely one of a minority. I'm a white, English, heterosexual (I'm OK there), professional, female widow with a decent house, not much money and Christian ethics.

Some years ago I did an A Level course in Sociology, at Night School, simply because I found it an interesting subject. When I sat the exam I gave all my answers a left-wing, feminist, pro-minority, P C bias because I guessed that was what the examiners wanted. I got an A*. Says it all, really, doesn't it? ;)

How many of the village would be children/adults/elderly?

Perhaps of the eleven homosexuals/lesbians, the odd one out, who wasn't in a couple, could run the post office.;)

If the demographic was applied to Brigton-


84 would label themselves as middle class.

57 would own a cat.

43 of them would have started at university.

16 would be hetrosexual.

90 would have voted Labour at the last election.

3 would be asian.

16 would daily commute the 60 miles to London.

9 would never have bought the Big Issue.

9 would sell the Big Issue.

Who are Minorities?

There is no universally accepted definition of 'minorities', and the word is interpreted differently in different societies. The United Nations (UN) has failed to agree a definition of what constitutes a minority, beyond that implied in the title of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Persons belonging to National or Ethnic, Religious and Linguistic Minorities. Attempting a more precise statement has been fraught with difficulties: in some cases the motivation for a tighter definition has been to deny certain rights to certain peoples.



Our response
Minority Rights Group International (MRG) focuses its work on non-dominant ethnic, religious and linguistic communities, who may not necessarily be numerical minorities. MRG's work includes initiatives with indigenous and tribal peoples, migrant communities and refugees. These communities may not wish to be classified as minorities for various reasons. We also recognize that these groups are not homogenous - some members face further marginalization due to age, class, disability, gender or other factors.


The groups MRG works with are among the poorest and most marginalized groups in society. They may lack access to political power, face discrimination and human rights abuses, and have 'development' policies imposed upon them. MRG seeks to protect and promote the basic rights of these communities. We believe that recognition of minority and indigenous peoples' rights is crucial to establishing and maintaining just and peaceful societies.
