If you take them out of the fridge an hour before you boil them they go back to room tempertature, also you could put them in the water from cold instead of dropping them in boiling water.
Egg aren't in the fridge in the shop because they don't need to be in the fridge, but once you get them home, it extends the life of the eggs up to the use by date at least if you do put them in the fridge.
Reminds of sunny delight, that didnt need to be in the fridge but was put in the fridge. P&G said it was to keep it fresh and it tastes better, in reality it was to make us think it was fresh and good for us. not that it's bad, but it's hardly fresh orange juice.

So if you but them from the shop and put them in the fridge they will last to the use by date.
If you leave them on the supermarket shelf until the use by date will they be ok or off?
Why does that Government web site I linked above say they should be in a fridge?
Does anyone know Eggwena Currie personally by any chance and could find out for us?

Have occasionally found my fags in there, as daughter says won't make them last any longer, maybe I am longing for a cool drag now and then

thats true, and if they're really bad they float.
Dunno neil, I'd assume, but assumptions are usually wrong, that they'd have a display until date too.

In the main fridge the usual, plus chocolate, cough sweets tunes etc cos it keeps them nice and fresh esp in summer, and you've always got some fit for consumption then, water in the summer, for making fruit drinks, a fridge thermometer, always useful. In the other fridge, beer, mostly, and other drinks, and my seeds for the garden, in packets, and camera film.

Is that why I float when I take a bath?

(Sorry to disappoint you Granny if it's not down to my usual standard!).

Wow Madhatter, you still use film? I still haven't totally disposed of my old 35mm stuff although I did get rid of a lot of it. I haven't used any for ages. It took me a long while to convert to digital but once I had I wondered why I'd not done it sooner. Do you ever use digital at all?
