Why dont they teach proper?
im 16 now and in my final year at school and im ashamed to say that i didnt know where the river thames were (i think thats how its spelt) i got told off a 6 year old boy!! they dont teach anything anymore like when my dad was in school.. when a teacher is absent they get supply teachers in and they are clueless about the subject. i mean whats the use of that especially when im so close to doing my gcse's and when we complain to the teachers they just ignore us how do they expect us too pass an exam with a art teacher in maths
and then they'll only complain when we get crap gcse's it happened to my sister she did bad in the subjects she had mainly supply teachers for her classes. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I had the same last year (which was my final year) at Mount Carmel....teachers dropping like flies taking afternoons off all over the place while they were sending letters home telling parents of their concern for students' attendance! absolutely appalling...but dont worry mel, after all that I got 11 out of 11 GCSE's at A-C so they aint that hard!! :D
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
Yeah, that does sound pretty rediculous. I did my GCSE's last year. The teachers at Rhyddings were really helpful and worked really hard for the students.
Overall I got 13 GCSE's. |

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
If students aren't getting continuous support from their teachers, and are having to rely on staff not qualified to teach in a subject, that is wrong.
As for the river Thames, I probably knew all about that from an early age from reading books out of school. Even children's programmes in the 60's/70's like Blue Peter were full of interesting facts. |

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
and maybe if you had a brain....you'd realise i said 'were' as in past tense, flower:)
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I doubt you could get 11 GCSE's at grades A-C. Actually; if you got one of those oh so special goldfish you bang on about to tutor you.....you could pull it off.

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
3ft take what they are offering and shove it up there arse, you can only do what the system wants you too, but? if you want to go further then do it cause schooling is crap!

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
None of us are perfect. I'm terrible at spelling and especially punctuation. Coming on these forums though has greatly improved it. Practice makes better.
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
yes we all make spelling mistakes ....... but it is true teaching is not the same as it used to be, bring back the three "R" s READING .WRITING & ARITHMATIC, thats how we got taught didn't do any harm in fact i would say thats the best way oo & a certain amount of "fear" of the techer.

schooling
what school are you at??
I work in a local school and would be interested to see if it's the same school as i totally agree with what you are saying |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
mel 3ft is at mount carmel

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
...where I left in the summer.
It's not the first year this has happened. Granted, they give a lot of special attention to the students in fifth year but it's nowhere near acceptable for the amount of supply teachers we had in the run up to our final exams, and especially during the modular exams in year 10. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I don't know what to say. You can always blame ignorance on those who are supposed to teach you. But at some stage in life you have to take responsibility for yourself. If you want to remain ignorant, easy peasy. If you want to progress, set yourself goals: to learn how to spell, to learn anything that can lead to a better life, whatever. Then what remains is to work hard to achieve what you want. Hard work!
I have attended many courses where the teaching was crap. But because I was interested in the subject, I would read many more books than were set to be read and do as much as I could because I wanted to get on. Remember never blame anyone. When something goes wrong (education, relationships..., whatever) there is only one person that can put it right. That is you. You were born to learn from experience. If you reject that experience you reject and neglect the opportunity to progress. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
Well said godfrey.................by the way you dont have a relation called Ghandi do you?
....just wondering :) |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
If you really want to learn, you can. Once you learn to read, READ - anything you can get your hands on. The quality of teaching may not be great, but you can do a lot for yourself. I must admit I was appalled at one open evening at my son's school, when I spoke to the French teacher in French, and she said "Oh, your French is much better than mine"! - it bl***dy well shouldn't have been.
If you want to learn how to punctuate properly, get that useful little book "Eats Shoots and Leaves" - well worth the money. If you can get your hands on any of Robert Ridout's books of English Grammar, they are very useful, as well as being fun to read. |

When I eventually woke up to the fact that if you want a humdrub life and can't get that job that you think your entitled too you have to do something about it, get to college, do night school, anything that will give you a leg up. I know as a young person this sounds like crap and someone will give you that job, even if your spellings rubbish, your english is so,so and the Tattoos and piercings look great, but in this big wide world something as small as a BA or BSc next to your name will get you a double pay rise. Don't surcome to the "yer don't need awt lass" attitude it will only hold you back from accomplishing what your capable of. |
I don't mean to be rude mel3ft but your English and grammar are terrible! Obviously a new thing to us 'oldies' (with all the text message's now) but you really must keep the English language alive! We are counting on you young one's to save it!:) Rule Brittana.:engsmil:

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
go melly, go melly!!!!! Obviously i don't think your a dunce and yes we all do spell things wrong, yes you know i had 12 teachers to teach me how to cook, 4 science teachers and three french teachers all of whom didnt have a clue what they were teaching, but it seems to me like people are saying that its the learners fault??? Not exactly my fault i went to a terrible school were the teachers could not even educate the pupils properly? or your fault that you can not spell properly, but all i say is just do your best thats the only thing you can do!
I did revision (the teachers told me what to revise) and guess what they told me the wrong revision list! ha! So anyway im saying good luck and even if you do get terrible results its not the end of the world, i will always need a little sister to pick on so that could be your job!!! :D |

I think if you read a number of replys to your thread they are saying "study" and you will overcome the short fall of poor teaching. Maybe it isn't the teaching, but what sticks.
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
We have had this before in other threads ,and its not right to judge as long as people know what you mean on here mel take no notice of the others EVERYONE makes mistakes
As they say let let him/her that has never made a mistake speak first and i will show you an idiot. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I agree with Mick. We all understood Mel's point, and concerns for her education. It was a bit cruel and unnecessary to point out mistakes, we all make them.
Good luck Mel, and like some other people have said education doesn't begin and end with school. Some of the cleverest and most succesful people I know don't have an examination to their name. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
One thing that worries me is that despite Mel and other telling how poor teaching standards are nowadays we hear every year how exam results are the highest ever. Something somewhere doesn't quite add up.
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I dont think today's teaching is any better or worse than it was. Just different.
It depends on how much of what they are trying to teach you sticks in your head. They need to make the subject interesting for a starters and one way of teaching isnt always right for all. I left school with no qualifications. My math skills are almost non existant but I managed to stay in the A stream because I was so quiate nobody knew I was in the class. My spelling is terrible because I tend to write has I speak. For years I thought I was stupid because I was terrible at math's,geography, history, needlework and Art. But 3yrs ago I passed my N.V.Q.level 3 in care. This is eqivalent to an A level. So you see Mel, no matter how you do in your exam's it's what you do when you have finished them that matters. Just deside what it is you want to do and go for it. There are lots of jobs you can do that can get you qualifications on the job. Good Luck Mel,on what ever it is that you deside to do. I'm sure you will do well what ever it is you deside to do. |

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I took my O-levels at QEGS in 1981. I did well, but failed Maths. Years later I decided to go to Brixton College at night, to study for what by this time had become GCSE Maths.
After taking both Maths GSCE and the old O-level, I can say that the former was much easier. 25% was course work, 25% multiple choice, the remaining 50% was an examination. I did pass, and skipped to work the morning I got my results, more excited than when I was awarded my degree. I'm not saying this to diminish or tarnish the examination results of anyone, but as someone who has done both I can see why result tables are showing better and better results, mainly because the examinations have got easier. |

Nothing good in life is ever handed to you on a plate. For those who put in the effort, despite poor teaching, they will reap the rewards. You must have worked hard for your passes Shaker, as I have and still am for mine. Learning does not end when you leave school, the vast majority of a person's education happens when they are older, whether that be further education, job skills or life skills. School is merely there to show you how to learn. Carry on with your studies Mel and read, read, read.....You are an intelligent girl so don't let a poor start at education grind you down, work at it and you will succeed. Hmmmmm, after my little motivational outburst, does anyone fancy doing my degree dissertation for me???? :D :D |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I agree with you lettie but I had to put in the hard work out of class time....the appropriate guidance was simply not given in class. My point is that this should not happen. Yes students should work hard but shouldnt have to resort to creating their own syllabus.
|
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I agree that guidance should be given, but even at University that guidance is minimal (and I'm paying for mine). I work full time and do at least 15 hours a week study for my degree in my own time and at my own expense.....
Bloody Nora!!! That makes me sound like a bit of a mug doesn't it... :D |

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
Mel stated her problem and I think everyone of us in this caring web-community is eager to give her kind support even if is sometimes unpalitable. Remember love is expressed in many ways.
Many here have indicated by their own experience in life that hard work is the only way to go. There is only so much parental feeding that can take place - in the end you have to learn to feed yourself. The fledgling in the nest has to learn to fly - in the end the parent birds abandons it as the only way to encourage it to fly. Strong emotions can be a great motivation to action and a change in beliefs. Shame (in your case by a 6-year old) could be the motivation you need. It gives a shock to your system that says WAKE UP. On many occassions I have been overcome by something that has been said to me, often but not always by a stranger, that has challenged some of my most basic beliefs. They weren't aware that what they said was so profound. But it is a wake-up call and can lead to a growth in personality if you are ready to take up the challenge to change. The prevalent youth reaction these days is "whatever" meaning "I cannot face that", "I am not interested". The challenge to take part in the world is dismissed as irrelevant. Everything in this world is relevant because this world, if you belief in fate, is organised for your benefit whether it be good or bad. All the doors are waiting to be opened by you and you should be running through them shouting "wow, isn't this fantastic, I never knew this existed, I never knew I could do this, I never thought I could survive that". |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
Well said mate

Re: Why dont they teach proper?
I too left school with virtually nothing to show for my hard work. At the age of 24 I decided to go to college where I managed to get GCSE maths & english, A level equivalent psychology sociology and principles of care. I also got a certificate for interpersonal skills. All this was done in 9 months and I had two young children to look after and a house to run with no support from anyone. Up until then I had been treated as thick & stupid so if I can do it anyone can.
As others have said stick with it Mel & do your best, if you don't get the help you need now go to college later. |
Re: Why dont they teach proper?
You should get a choice of what subjects you want to do (Science/English/Maths mandatory) but the rest, you should get a choice.
For the first 3 years you do every subject possible (well at mount carmel we did anyway :p) then in year 10 when you start gcse's you got to choose two to carry on out of music/geography/history/ict/drama/art perhaps there were more I can't remember. Anyways, I took Geography and ICT.. Okay I got an A in ICT but I didnt really *learn* anything, because in my circumstance I already knew things I just had to produce a load of coursework and pass the exam. I took geography as the lesser of the evils, I didn't like the subject and only managed a C because I didn't care about it one bit. RE/French/(Electronics/Design tech) were madatory, and I don't personaly class them as important providing you don't plan to do anything where they could be needed. I didn't find French/RE interesting at all, and hence I spent 5 years 'learning' and managed to get hardly anything out of it (French: D, RE: E). I was predicted A's, but I simply didn't find the subject interesting so never had any passion to do well, and hence it really was a waste of time, I could have spent all that lesson time learning some form of advanced science, or getting an A in maths rather than B, so then i'd be better prepared for my Alevel maths. I'm hopeless at English of course (as you will have noticed) but at least I found it interesting and managed to get a B out of it even though im shocking at structuring an essay/spelling/punctuation, I managed to get a B because I worked hard on my coursework and ensured I knew the books/poems inside out when I went in to the exam. Anyways, thats my opinion, people should get more choice so they don't have to learn subjects that might not be of any use to them in future.. |
