I don't think it could have been any clearer, but I'll try........

like the Oscars the awards will be for this year, but be given for work achieved in the previous one.

Anal- petty.

Clearer?:D

No.... I would have assumed that for many of the categories, those nominated would have provided a service over many years - if not decades - and are continuing to do so. Why then, person of the year?

And since when as anal come to mean petty? Is this Gary's own language or summat they speak up Ossy?

Because person of the decade would only happen every 10 years and by the time the next one came around half the nominees would probably be dead.

I presume that since it appears to be an annual award, like the afore mentioned Oscars, it is given for someone who has achieved something of merit in the past twelve months.

Back to anal. No it's a commonly used phrase meaning petty. It derives from someone who is anally retentive, and would rather dwell on the petty details and minutiae, rather than look at the broader picture.

erm, aren't we supposed to be nominating people instead of having pointless bickering about why the awards exist?
some people will pick at anything...

Re: Person of the year

It’s a bit like being anally fixated isn’t it. For Christ sake can’t we just once have a discussion without resulting to bun hole metaphors and the like.

Returning to the matter in hand, the success of these local community based awards is publicity, how else would you know to nominate someone for Good Neighbour or Young Person without it.

Keeping that in mind could we as a forum/group come up with a short list of people to go forward in each category? Rather than find reasons to discuss arse holes……..Think about it.

Child of Courage
Emma’s Son

Public Service Person
A Community Warden

Young Person
Shakermaker – for being an example of good youth and not turning into a pratt.

Entrepreneur
Eric Whalley for services to Accrington

Volunteer of the Year
Dorothy McGregor

Amateur Sports Person
There must be one?

Good Neighbour
And one of these?

Employee of the Year
There’s one at HBC isn’t there Garinda

Bravery
And there’s many of these in our public services or even our own homes (see top of the list for an example)

I can only assume it is a commonly used phase amongst the gay community, because I have certainly never heard of it. I would suggest that in future, you stick to standard english terminology rather than this gibberish, which no one else can understand.

I must say I was quite in agreement with Tealeaf until I had a look at the online Oxford Dictionary and found the following.

anal-retentive

adjective Psychoanalysis excessively orderly and fussy (supposedly because of conflict over toilet-training in infancy).

One would have thought, however, if Garinda was to use such phrases, especially when he describes them as common, he would use and spell them correctly.

Re: Person of the year

Unfortunately, I can't think of anybody specific in my life that I could vote for in these categories .. must get out more !! Have good neighbours, sure lots of charity workers, entrepeneurs (must be a local Alan Sugar somewhere), people who were given the opportunity to show how brave they were, children of courage, etc., that deserve this recognition, but can't think of anyone specific. Who is Eric Whally or Dorothy McGregor anyway ? Now I've just read about Emma's son, would vote for him.
The one good thing I like about this is that it deviates from the worship of pop stars/actors and footballers who are considered heroes these days; makes me angry  They are not heroes at all in my book !!

Eric Whalley is the Chairman of Accrington Stanley
He has taken the club from mickey mouse league oblivion to the doorstep of League football...bringing the club back to where it belongs after a 44 year absence. Also bringing the town of Accrington into the limelight through the club's achievments.
He has taken every role at the club from player to manager to kitman to chairman.
Eric Whalley IS Accrington Stanley Football Club.
more than deserving of an award in my opinion.
