And how do the government think they are going to make this work.....if 13 year olds can go and buy cigarettes now......what are they going to do that is different to stop them buying cigarettes until they are 18.

No matter what age laws you are what i cant understand is this :

At 16 you can work full time employment
At 16 you are leagally old enough to become a parent

so whats the difference in taking on the responsability of a child at 16 and going down the pub for a pint or having a smoke ?

The law is an ass. You can have sex & kids at 16 but you can't watch an x rated movie till your 18.

I think you answer your own question, responsibility of a child and going down the pub are no where near the same thing and having a child at sixteen is also irresponsible.

good point Debbie.
So technically two 16 year old kids could film themselves legally having sex but they would be breaking the law if they then watched it.
What a laff !

I did not know there was a legal age to become a parent.

The latest on the smoking issue is that if a government or health official visits a smoker’s house the occupant should not smoke for at least one hour before the visit.

Big Brother is around the corner. The anti-smoking brigade have opened a can of worms that will have far reaching affects on all of us smokers and non-smokers alike. The precedent is being established that the government can regulate our lives from cradle to grave from dawn to dusk and dusk till dawn.

The next target is going to be the car for the masses.

If the Government really wants to stop smoking, then ban tobacco entirely. Simple. Of course people will try to smuggle the stuff in from more enlightened nations, but we can cope with that, can't we. Just a few more thought police, and we'll be fine. And just think what it will save the NHS.

Just two small things -

1. From where is the Government going to replace the revenue from the tax on tobacco? 12 million smokers (a conservative estimate), average 20 a day, £2 per 20 in tax MINIMUM, - £24 million A DAY. A great deal more than smokers cost the NHS.

2. When everyone has been forced to stop smoking, and becomes so much healthier, thereby living longer, where do we get the money to pay all those pensions for so many more years? We can barely afford to pay what we pay now.

So - whatever your views on smoking, it scarcely makes economic sense to ban tobacco.

It's not healthcare or social care, it's regulation.

(Mind you, I agree with Tealeaf about keeping under 25s - make it under 30s - in the pub. Then we might not have that bl**dy awful loud music!)
