Re: hot x buns

I heard that the hot cross bun might be banned, but this was last year. I though that it was a "pith take" by the non-religious people or those who see the christian cross as offensive.

I hope its not true and this never comes about. Gowd ... its only a ruddy bun at the end of the day !

BLACKBURN RAVER 06-02-2006 12:30

i too read about this yesterday but i cant remember where....

T.C. 06-02-2006 12:37

Re: hot x buns

Hot cross buns were first sold by street sellers in the nineteenth century to a special ditty. They were adopted as an Easter celebration, and have been so for nearly 200 years. Now some idiotic school teacher in Suffolk says they can only be eaten by the children in her school if the cross is removed. I think this is taking the ethnic minority situation too far.

Re: hot x buns

Your right grannyclaret it is PC gone mad. Ethnic minorities are allowed to wear different clothes on religious grounds, have 'special food' cooked for them in school, but it looks like Christian kids can't have a bun because of a cross. The PC crowd should be hauled before the courts for causing racial hatred. Most ethnic minorities couldn't care less what any one else eats as long as they don't have to.

Re: hot x buns

Wasn't it some headmistress down sarf somewhere that decided to ban hot X buns from the school off her own bat. For once I don't think the politicians had a hand in it but it just goes to show that their pc brainwashing is working with those that cannot think for themselves.

An interesting side note regarding political correctness, according to yesterday's Observer BA cabin crew have been forbidden from wearing crucifixes on flights to Saudia Arabia, so they won't offend passengers.

West Ender 06-02-2006 14:41

Re: hot x buns

Apparently this was a head teacher who said she had children in her school who are Jehova's Witnesses and they don't believe in celebrating Easter, the Cross or anything similar. Fine, they don't have to eat the buns do they? I think that woman, and those who think like her, is a trouble-maker trying to make a name for herself by being politically correct.

It'll be Easter eggs next.:(

A mixture of pagan symbolism of rebirth, mixed with a representation of the stone being rolled away from Jesus's tomb in the garden of Gethsemane.

At least we won't have Cadbury's Creme Eggs in the shops on Boxing Day.;)

I am in total agreement with you except that I don't like hot cross buns, but it is about time we got our country back from the hands of the do-gooders, the country that our ancestors fought and paid so dearly for in the last century.

It's the spices that make them hot, after all the fasting and plain food you've endured through Lent.

No, the cross is usually marzipan, or even just an indentation.

The spices are added to the dough.

Neil, have you never eaten an uncooked chilli? It's taste is described as hot.;)

Re: hot x buns

This is on a par with the Headmistress in Tower Hamlets who turned down a free visit for the school to a performance of Romeo and Juliet by the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her reason - it celebrated heterosexual love!

We are now having to realise that tolerance only works one way - in favour of those who see themselves (whether genuinely or not) as a minority, of whatever sort. Obviously, all national customs and traditions are the province of the majority, therefore no tolerance need be shown to them.

I'm only afraid that we'll wake up too late to what's happening, and find that our heritage has been completely trashed in the name of political correctness.

Get behind me Satan !! Whoops not appropriate saying that.
Once upon a time, when I was at home with first child, used to make jam tarts (as me Mum did). Left over pastry from the cases, was rolled out into a long-snake like shape and used to twist and put a cross on top of same tart just to decorate like. Better not make them any more, might get raided at dawn

Dont need the PC brigade for that up here. Stopped wearing mine because of the grief I got about "handgliders" from the very narrow minded. Wonder if aI can put a "hot Cross" on their bun eeerrrrm. :D

The ones in the picture you posted have a marzipan cross. The cross is usually dough mixed with marzipan, to make it lighter in colour than the bun dough, which is usually a pale yellow because of the spices.

I got some in Asda yesterday and easter is a few weeks away yet so how can they be easter only grub. Some places do them all year round because people like them.

Madhatter 07-02-2006 23:17

Re: hot x buns

True but they dont get put on the centre stand packed up and on offer at any other time than easter. but yes I buy them most of the year round, they are one of my favourite foods, and are my favourite bun/cake type of food, id rather have one than a doughnut anyday.
