Re: last WW1 veteran to get state funeral

What a stupid, unecessary and, frankly, insulting idea. It does not surprise me that Duncan-Smith was first to come up with the idea, that is apparently all he is good for - pointless ideas.

The passing of the last serving soldier of WW1 should merit a sober and respectful piece in the Times and that should be an end of it. His obsequies should be a private matter for his family and friends; not the occaision for a national circus of mawkish sentimentality.

The dead of WW1 are memorialised throughout the land, their sacrifice and their memory is honoured on Armistice Day and on Remembrance Sunday in the presence of the Monarch and the Royal Family and one of their number, representative of all, has already been accorded a State Funeral and now lies in a place of honour beneath the nave of Westminster Abbey. What purpose would another State Funeral serve, except the political self-agrandisement of a bunch of slimy weasles who would not recognise the concepts of honour, patriotism and self-sacrifice if their lives depended on it?

Agree (in a way) with what you are all saying, however, when the last veteran does pass away, it will be newsworthy , and don't think he will be allowed a quite funeral with his family due to the media, they will all be scrambling for details .. bet they have a profile on all 10 already .... maybe best if the Government does somehow honour him officially before it does turn into a more unofficial 'circus'
Hope it is reported with dignity and makes us all think again on this profound day.
