Language or dialect??
I watched a program here last night that argued the fact that the Scots language is a language in its own rights and not a dialect. It is always implied that it is a dilect of English the same as the Americans Canadian Aussies Kiwis etc. I believe it is a language in its own right as it has diversity and its own character. How would you discribe it?

Re: Language or dialect??
I disagree.
You speak English. I lived there for three years and never needed a phrase book. It has it's own unique dialect, and some great words not used in other parts of the kingdom, but it's defintely English. Gaelic on the otherhand, which is spoken and taught in some Highland schools is very much it's own language. Just don't try using it to buy anything down in the Barras in Glasgow.;) |
Re: Language or dialect??
It's English.Accents are easy to pick up after a while.English is a very versatile language but at the same time very nonsensical.
