Primary school education.
 

At present I am trying to help my daughter (10) and my cousins daughter (9) with what both their schools discribed as "history projects." One on the vikings and one on the eighteenth century and even with internet access at home and at work and the library I seem to be stuggling especially with the eighteen century. I feel that this level is beyond a lot of children at this age especially without internet access and cannot find a single site that has help links sugestions for children of this age. Maybe its me but these kind of projects were as a rule set at high school am I missing something here.

I want to help them the best I can but seem to be fighting a loosing battle. Can anyone help me as these have to be finished by the 28th and 25th respectively. I have surfed untill I am demented and downloaded over 200 pages and still hit a brick wall. Any help or advise would be gratly appreciated.

have you visited the BBC HomePage on Vikings, do a search on google to get the link, you could also try for 18th century as well.The BBC on vikings is aimed at ages 7-9years so may be a bit young but worth a look.

What sort of thing are they doing for the C18th?

This is the sort of thing I would have relished as a child, all without internet access, just the good old library.

Monarchs? Social history? Industrial revolution. A bit more information Spug's and I'm sure people would love to help.

does the Jorvik Museum at York not have a web page?
Maybe you could get them to look at an aspect of everyday life.....or family life.
!8th Century...maybe choose an invention from that time and look at its impact.......only suggestions, my homework helping days are just a dim and distant memory.

Spuggie, you didn't say what aspect of the 18th century. Does the school want a general picture of the century or are they to focus on just one or two events? Obviously, there was a lot going on then. You had the American war of Independence, the French Revolution, colonisation of Australia and the beginnings of the British Industrial Revolution just for starters. I'm sure you'd find loads of information about all of them on the internet or in a library.

History is one of my hobbies so if I can help with pinpointing events please let me know. It's easier to search the internet if you have a reference point to start with and I'd enjoy helping you to find out.

Went throught the sites I was given and C18th Scotland was a bit "different" to say the least. G the electric Scotland site was like a mini encyclopidia even having books written 1899-1901 which seem to have a great selection of info and very much to the point fashion was more over the top than today. The BBC sites with interaction were great and will make it easier for them. I never realised how much info was available for the Norsemen and how rich though hard their lives where not the band of marauding "bullies" they are portrayed as (ok a few bad apples among them).

To give an idea of what is expected of them the last projects they did filled an exercise book. Thanks again gang.
