Accrington Web - Memories of Clayton le Moors

Oh Clayton le Moors was a wonderful town.
Till someone decided to knock it all down.
Gone are the places where we used to go.
It's progress they say but we don't really know.
The Load of Mischief and the Wood yard has gone
The Star and the Empress where we had such fun.
There was only a road where the cars used to go.
Now a motorway's built so that traffic can flow!

Long Row and High St Towered over't town.
If you stood at the top you could see miles around.
And right at the bottom George Hoyle's shop sold
All kinds of things that your basket could hold.
There were chip shops, shoe shops, cafes and Co-ops.
Sweet shops and butchers and some baker's shops.
There was once a post office to buy your stamps from.
Now you have to walk miles if you want to get some.

The Town Hall cum Library stood on Pickup street.
Theres a new Civic Centre where people can meet.
But the Vic Ballroom's gone where we used to dance
And where many a young couple found true romance.
The Whit Monday Walks were a pleasure to see
All the Churches around walked in full Unity!
Except Roman Catholics they had their day.
They always walked the first Sunday in May.

The Processions they lasted from eleven till one.
Then back to the Churches for Cofffee and bun.
At two o' clock sharp. It was Derby Day.
When Enfield and Accy at cricket did play.
Although Clayton's changed over many a year.
The people who live there have nothing to fear.
They can't take away all fond memories it's true
Of the town that they loved and the people they knew.
