Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

We have a possible regular babysitter whos a friend's daughter living just round the corner from us. Whats the going rate nowadays? Shes 15, We are looking at a 7pm-12 with us supplying the DVD, pop, snacks etc.

I don't want to rip her off or pay over the odds ourselves.

Any other hints, tips that I should be aware of?

Thought babysitters had to be 16 years old.

Add a few cans of lager and £20-00 and I will help you out myself Ian
:p

A tenner should do It. That was my going rate. Although I felt guilty accepting money from family. They always insisted. And just gave a tenner.

A fiver is too short, and you dont want to be messing about with change. So a crisp £10.

My youngest Daughter is 15 and it would be illegal for her to babysit her own younger brothers let alone someone elses kids. Sorry entwisi but ya dont want to go shouting about it mate :)

BTW I think most 15 year old girls are old enough and mature enough to babysit and it should be the parents call... But it aint...

I always thought it was 14

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

Not even 14 it seems..

I stand corrected on the first part and will stick to the second part of my message seeing I had both ends covered hehe :)

I think a lot of people have always thought there was a min age..

Googling a bit further it seems if something does go wrong and they are under 16 you could get prosecuted, if there over 16 they would be prosecuted - can't prosecute under 16
A "Child" is classed as 14 or under
Here is a link to lancashire police recommendations

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

Yes this seems to be where it gets confused...

Quote:

it should be noted, that if parents arrange for a baby sitter who is under sixteen years of age the parents have not transferred any responsibility for their children to be looked after. Therefore, should any harm or accident occur to a child whilst in the care of an under age baby sitter, the parents may still be held responsible and may have action taken against them for neglect.

Thats what I must have known and over time wrongly presumed it meant you had to be 15 to babysit...I am guessing I aint the only one.

When my grandaughter was a baby, 'we' advertised for a babysitter 'cause they would have to look after my seven year old son too .. we finished up with a 16 year old boy from the estate, who was absolutely wonderful. We paid him £10 up to midnight (15 years ago remember), but for every part thereof we were late after midnight, £5 per hour. It worked a treat and never felt too guilty if not home in time. He was worth it anyway, and always had good contact with the parents.

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

I would ask the girl's mother what she thinks is a reasonable amount for her daughter to be paid.

I would also be very strict about how many 'visitors' this lass can have whilst she is in your house. My mate had a regular babysitting job when we were teenagers and always had a houseful of mates some of whom used to bring beer and fags. My mate came across as mature and sensible and looked like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth, so no matter how innocent your babysitter appears to be, lay the groundrules......:D

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

when i babysat i only got a fiver! if your supplying all the food and the dvd's you should charge about a tenner. I think i started baby sitting at about 13/14, id sit on the setee all night with the children watching cartoons, id make there supper and then put them to bed then id clean up and wash up. They were the best children ive ever babysat for! they were so well behaved. I think that if this girl is mature enough and has a good background then give her a chance, i suppose it doesnt really matter how old they are aslong as your children are safe and looked after thats all that matters!

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

I know you are all thinking around about a tenner, I don't think this is enough ! After all, it is five hours and only works out @ £2 per hour. Would you work for this ? As for food and DVD's ... well, only snacks and plenty on telly anyway. I would definitely pay £ 15 if in this position today, or am I stupidley overgenerous??

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

We've decided on £15 katex, plus food and DVD. As you say even at £15 its only 3 quid an hour. I certainly wouldn't work for that. In fact I was on more than that when I was 16.

I keep telling Alec he should advertise himself as a babysitter. He is brilliant with kids, calm headed with them. So if anybody is ever stuck, he is a quiet lad studying 10 GCSE's.

Re: Babysitter, Whats the going rate?

How can anyone say babysitting is work!!! Yes if the kids are older I would agree, but the likehood is that they are already in bed before you start and you don't hear a thing all night! So most of the time you are actually being paid for watching TV!!! I have always seen the payment not for working but for the responsibility!
