Whiteburn & Whitepool.

Okay, so the title of the thread is slightly misleading. Cant remember where I heard it, but apparently the names of Blackburn & Blackpool have to change their names because its seen as racism. But it didnt say anything about Whiteburn or Whitepool, I just thought it was a good title lol. I also dont think this is true, but I think it would be ridiculous. Anyone else?

The change of the Blackboard and Ba Ba Blacksheep annoyed me enough, never mind changing of town names.

Who says black is a racist term? Anyone who does is racist, because they obviously think that "black" is a term of abuse. Black is a colour, full stop. You might as well say that "white" is a racist term.

I did check this thread to make sure it wasn't posted on April 1!

Try telling the taxi driver that's where you want to go, when you've had a few!

While we're at it lets change the names of Church incase it offends the atheists, Earby in case it offends the deaf and Salmsbury Bottoms in case it offends people with large ones.

I hope it's a joke! :D

So in theory at some point in the future all towns could be just a code along the lines of a postcode. :( ACC01 BBN01 BNY01

Black's not offensive to anyone, especially black people, it's just a wind up.

Why don't places like Whitehaven come in for the same sort of stick?;)

As I have Irish ancestry I find Paddington offensive and also the casual use of the derogatery term "Mick"

I find Peter Britcliffe and the whole of his cabinet of curiosities to be deeply offensive and an infringement of my human rights - can I have a rebate on my Council Tax?

You are right about that - I drink black coffee - I have done since I was 13. I was in a meeting once and realised that the majority of the people there had a different ethnic background to me so I wondered (being as PC as possible) whether asking for black coffee could offend. So later on I asked one chap who I consider to be a friend whether he was offended by it - he nearly fell off his chair laughing! Black is the colour of the coffee - simple as that, he said, in between hysterics that I would even consider for a minute that it might be offensive.

It's very difficult in this day and age knowing what is offensive to Asian people and what white people and the media SAY is offensive to Asian people. As you can tell from some other threads I am still picking my way through the minefield and probably won't get it right every time but I do know that 'black' does not offend anyone when used in the context of what you're talking about i.e. black coffee, black board, Blackburn!

There lies the crux of the argument. A minority will always take it as offensive and as such that part will never change. The fact that you were laughed at shows how "bonkers" it has become. Living up here has in someways given me an insite as to what its like to be a minority even if I am a caucasian British male. It took a long time to learn what was in jest and what was not with the result I can laugh it off.
