Tree watch.
I have just returned from Accrington, with my Eye-Spy book of trees.
All the other trees in Hyndburn are starting to show signs of life, and are begining to bud. Sadly the new oak trees planted on Broadway still look so dormant they might be dead. I think planting them in November, when it was minus six, was not such a wise or cost effevtive move. At least they looked photogenic for the 'grand reopening'.;) The first person to see any signs of life from the Broadway oaks can claim a lucky acorn or some karma. |
Re: Tree watch.
You daft s*d Garinda, good competition though :D
Would give you some Karma for it, however, looking at your latest green block .. appears to be ready to explode  |
Re: Tree watch.
I think you might be right there Garinda. There is more life in a branch of Muti's magnolia tree that blew down in the storms.....that has buds on it and they look ready to open any day when the sun warms the air just a bit.
|
Re: Tree watch.
And I know this is a bit off thread.....but you have got an awful lot of karma.......are you buying it at Booth's?????? :)
|
Re: Tree watch.
Well, don't worry, when they start doing the top bit of the road they can sort out the trees at the same time.

Mmmmmmmmm at what cost? Whats the going rate for seven twenty foot high oak trees. [By the way Katex if my power explodes I promise not to wipe it on the curtains.;)] |
Re: Tree watch.
I believe they're talking about another £250k for the top part of the road, they might be able to find a few quid to go to B&Q for some more trees out of that sort of money.
|
Re: Tree watch.
Lets hope thet don't plant the next ones in a drought, if these ones are dead, and forget to water them in.;)

Re: Tree watch.
What like the hanging baskets in Ossy?

I just had a terrible vision of a certain council leader staggering out of the Rose and Crown, trying to water the baskets with his little hose. So that's why they are all withered and brown.:D |
Re: Tree watch.
If you'd been what those trees have been through, you'd want a lie-in too

Seems to be about forty quid per tree. Times seven = two hundered and eighty knicker. Rather a lot, just for a photo opportunity at the 'grand reopening'. |

Acorn town needs its oaks so that must be the thinking behind it. They wouldnt plant them just for photo's and to be "borrowed" by unsavoiry elements. :o |

Oak trees are fantastic. Just think in about four hundred years the horrible blue and white facade will be hidden from view.;) |

Re: Tree watch.
Hmmm well yes, lets face it, you haven't exactly been left with a lot of old historic buildings have you, but on the plus side the ones you have got are very impressive. The bank at the end of broadway is quite nice.
|
Re: Tree watch.
Rindy,I will make it my personal duty to check on the trees every day as I pass them on a regular basis;usually whilst chasing shoplifters up and down Broadway!
|
Re: Tree watch.
Totally off topic but that reminds me, there was a guy, an immigrant, clearly not from this country, came up to me and asked me if id taken his money out of the cash point. He'd forgoten to pick it up, probably hassled by the child he had with him. Hope he got it back. I explained there was a good chance the cash point would take it back in if he hadn't took it within so many seconds, I had to virtually order him to go in to the bank to report it, as he thought he couldn't with it not being his bank. It was 250 quid.

Yes totally off topic. The most tenuous link you could have is that money grows on trees.;) Remember this as the maddest post ever.:D |
Re: Tree watch.
I have been over to Skipton today and on the way over I was looking out for Oak trees...and believe it or not, they all appear to be in the same state of suspended animation as those on Broadway...so maybe there is hope for them yet.
|
Re: Tree watch.
usually when I get up in the mornings......I,m in suspended animation....wonder if I,m an oak tree........
|
Re: Tree watch.
Hang on in there, Accy, there's still hope. The oak trees here aren't in bud yet either. Neither are the 2 little ones I'm bonsaiing in my garden.
I noticed the ash trees in the field opposite my house are budding. The old saying is, "Oak before ash, only a splash. Ash before oak, we're in for a soak." It's supposed to mean a wet Summer. So what else is new? :( |

Re: Tree watch.
The south aint caught onto this and aint got enough ressis to collect it. :D
|
Re: Tree watch.
Oaks are still dormant then, so eyes peeled on Broadway for signs of life and you can collect your lucky acorn or karma.:)

Re: Tree watch.
Had a nosey at one of the trees today and the branches are still green under the bark so there is hope for them yet! suspect they are just as fed up of this rubbish weather as we are!
|
Re: Tree watch.
I checked out the trees in passing today and am quite confident that they are all healthy and alive. Each one has healthy buds, they may not be much this year but if they can survive the vandals I think they would look quite nice next June.
They will eventually become too large for Broadway but as they are quite slow growing, most of us (well, me anyway) will be tree manure ourselves by the time this happens :D |
Re: Tree watch.
Thanks fellow tree spotters, that's encouraging news.
Fingers crossed. :) |
Re: Tree watch.
It does depend on if they get watered this summer, if they don't even if they bud, they won't survive. Everyone of our trees has died. There was talk of replacing them with metal trees with leaves but nothing came of that, latest was that allan lloyd was going to pay for them to be replaced, but I think he's scared he might release too many moths.

Re: Tree watch.
Climate plays a deciding role when determining the appropriate planting time. Newly planted trees do best when exposed to moderate temperature and rainfall and they need time to root and acclimatize before the onset of intense heat and dryness of summer or the freezing temperatures of winter. Spring and early fall, therefore, are generally the best planting seasons (depending on your location) with spring preferred over fall in the more northerly latitudes. In the southern United States, however, which does not experience an intense winter, planting can take place during the winter months. So minus six, on a cold November day, was probably not the wisest time to plant them.:( |
Re: Tree watch.
Better get the garden docter in. :D Sure the could wangle a visit from a famous name to do it.
|
Re: Tree watch.
We should get that woman back up here. the one who's programme there was a thread on here a couple of months back. she was originally from Rishton.... her name escapes me and I'm too damn lazy to look back through the old threads!!!

Re: Tree watch.
Still no signs of life.:(
There are a few brown buds, which may yet bloom, particularly as I gave them all a hug this afternoon. |
Re: Tree watch.
Wheres my lucky acorn? there is signs of life now, there full of it, greener than you've ever seen them
|
Re: Tree watch.
Karma given.:)
Thanks also to Lindsay Ormerod for her update on the springing into life of the oaks. All that hugging certainly paid off.;) |
