Forming A National Government

You asked for it staggeringman – so get your brain around this.

If you could wave a magic wand how would you decree the formation of a National Government?

I’m not asking what the government would do once in office – that is for another discussion but how YOU would form a genuine democratic government.

If I could do whatever I wanted to form the government....

I'd have the same first past the post system we have now, but MP's would only be there to represent views of the constituants not vote..

I'd have everyone with a chip inside them so that the whole country voted on EVERYTHING.

This would be much more truly democratic, however if I had a choice of forming government it wouldn't be 'ideal democracy' like this :p

You asked for a topic to bring back lively discussion staggeringman so I gave you one and that’s the best that you can do? It doesn’t even address the question.

In a true democracy every man, woman and child would have a vote. So would the (elected) head of State, and the criminally insane.

Proportional representation would also be fairer, and stop all this moving of boundaries for political gain.

Personally I think a dictatorship would be more fun, and that I'd make a good one. At least you'd all have nice clothes to wear.

Yes boundries change to suit parties yes everyone should vote yes MP's should vote as to ther constituants wish. Few snags though crop up;

1: How many parties do we end up with and how does the govenment form?

2: Would the PM be elected the same way as the president of the USA?

3: How do we finance it?

To the first question it could 20 plus and we end up with an Italian parliament run on coalitions.

Question 2 would mean you could end up with a PM who wants to do things his way and the house another US style political ping pong.

3: If it is state funded there would be no big industry players influence leading to them doing as they please just to "upset" govenment. Govenment needs a balance from Industry and Buisness.

In my opinion better the devil you know and better safe than sorry.
