North v South
I'm not too sure how it happens but it seems that the folk in our local bar always take sides, the Northerners against the Southerners.
Tonight's 'discussion' was centered on George Formby and I insisted that he had a ukelaleh, pardon the spelling, which was round. The Southern crowd say that it was like a small guitar. I've done a search but it seems a little conflicting.........someone help me out!! |
Re: North v South
not sure myself, but leaning on a lampost at the corner of the street waiting for a lady would get you nicked these days!

Re: North v South
H e sang a song(with my little uekalalie in my hand )... it was round and looked more like a tamborine shape.. so it wasent a guitar..

He played both types of instruments that you describe.
It's in another thread as well, but his wife was a clog dancer from Accrington. |

My Grandfather was a clog dancer in Accrington too and my Nan loved the George Formby films...........thanks for your help. Don't think I'm going to win the argument but at least I can agree to differ. June xx |

Re: North v South
In his earlier films George played an ordinary ukelele, that looks like a small guitar, but in his later films he played the banjolele which has a round body. It has the same tuning as a uke but the resonance of a banjo.
George lived most of his early life in Warrington and he's buried in the cemetery there as his mum lived in W'gton until she died 20 years or so ago aged 101. Warrington museum had a George Formby exhibiton a couple of years ago and there were 3 of his banjoleles on display as well as 1 of his motorbikes that he rode in the TT. George (as you might have guessed) is one of my all-time heros. :D |
Re: North v South
mine too..the inuendoes were always there ,, but it was classed as your own dirty mind..lol
|
Re: North v South
Most films of that time were good because of it. That includes Norman Wisdom.

My daughter bought me a CD of 24 of George's songs, Xmas '04. She was gobsmacked at some of the lyrics and couldn't believe how he got away with it. ;) |

Re: North v South
Interesting, GrannyClaret. We did agree to differ, North and South, that is, so thanks for all your help.
As for Accrington Stanley, I think I just said Accrington and I was right at the end of the day. Any suggestions for the next subject for the North/South evening argument..........maybe Gracie Fields might wind our Mancie up, lol. June xx |
Re: North v South
Amazingly, Queen Mary was a great fan of George Formby - it was suggested that he tone down his lyrics for a show she attended, and she refused to hear of it!
|
Re: North v South
Good on queen Mary....she gets my vote...
