I actually agree with M-A. It is nearly always the woman that holds teh purse strings. I would happily sell to the wife making sure she understood where teh money was going. If you can get the lady interested you are on a winner. Most of the time the blokes knew I was working for them in trying to improve an overall system but within the bounds laid out by the lady.

Likewise, when I worked the pub restaurant game, I always made sure the kids were happy because if they were happy and quiet the parents were overjoyed! :D

I have learned to be more assertive and not to be dazzled by the salesman. As the buyer you hold all the cards! Don't be pushed into buying anything... I have walked out of many car salesroom, despite the gleaming car looking very nice. I have also, like lettie, walked out of a VW garage.....nice cars but expensive for what they are..I went to look at a new model golf. Absolutely nothing to impress inside, nice outside...expensive

I've looked at Aston Martins (only through the showroom window), but I can't afford one. I suppose salesmen are on the look out for time wasters, and thus try to push a bit. That said, I certainly would not respond well to pressure - I research too, so I know what's on offer, what I want when I get there, and what I can afford.

There is no excuse if the sales people work for the same company, but do keep in mind that it'll be some companies themselves that insist on hard selling to their customers.

I once worked in one London store were you were reprimanded if you didn't approach a customer and ask 'how you could help them'. It wasn't too bad for me as I was working in gentleman's pyjamas (not literally) on the ground floor. By the time the customer had visited all five floors most would be in a furious rage after being asked the same thing twenty times.

We should also keep in mind that a lot of sales people are on very low salaries and rely on commission to make a living, very often relying on selling all the extras like guarantees and finance deals, which makes it their companies fault for them being too in your face.

That said I would always choose a soft selling person, who had all the information I needed, over a pushy git.

I agree with the low wage arguement. Thats why im in a good position to comment on such things, as i do actually get a high basic and good commision. Thus meaning i dont have to sell to everyone i meet. I dont need client's business, i value it...

But even though most don't agree, some people still need a little push in the right direction.

You either want/need a product or you don't...... If I need something I will buy it, if I don't, I won't. I love browsing round shops not to buy but to look. If I am hassled by the salespeople and asked if they can help me too many times, then I leave and I don't go back again when I am buying. I also take exception to having product details explained to my partner/dad if it is me who is buying, and I won't buy from there either.

Yes I'm a difficult ******, a rum customer, but I get what I want when I go shopping and I do my research beforehand for large purchases and am in and out of the shop in minutes. I will not deal with pushy salespeople and am likely to report their attitude to their superior just for the hell of it.:D I'm afraid there's no pushing me in the right direction.

Whats worse - pushy salesmen (and ladies) or the spinless cretins who stand around picking their nose and ignoring you when you want attention? I'd go for the latter any day; at least with a pushy salesman you can simply tell him to p*ss off.

I agree about a lot of salesman being on a low basic wage. But there still isn't any excuse for trying to force someone to make their mind up their particular brand. Also they need to learn that most women are as equalling capable of making their own decisions as any man, indeed some are much more decisive.
