Re: Any ideas what this does?
O.K, The wait is over, It is a Vehicle-Mounted Active Denial System (V-MADS)
Active Denial Technology is a breakthrough non-lethal technology that uses millimeter-wave electromagnetic energy to stop, deter and turn back an advancing adversary from relatively long range. It is expected to save countless lives by providing a way to stop individuals without causing injury, before a deadly confrontation develops. The technology was developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Department of Defense's Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate. Approximately $40 million has been spent on this technology over the past ten years. In July 2005 it was reported that the Active Denial System would be deployed to Iraq before the end of the year. Under an initiative called Project Sheriff, troops will receive a total of 15 vehicles. So thats what it is - but what does it do exactly? Its range is about 700 yards and it uses a transmitter to send a narrow beam of 95GHz millimeter(that might mean "microwave:rolleyes:") waves towards an identified subject. Travelling at the speed of light, the energy reaches the subject and penetrates less than 1/64 of an inch into the skin and produces an intense burning sensation that stops when the transmitter is switched off or when the individual moves out of the beam! A 2 second burst can heat the skin to an incredible 130 degrees F. (About 50 deg. Centigrade) To actually burn the skin, someone would have to remain in the beam for around 4 minutes! The sensation has been likened to touching a light bulb that has been on for a while but without the burns on the skin - now that IS going to frighten a riotous mob with small arms (thats guns, not tiny appendages dangling from the shoulder) or rocks which is precisely the situation that it was designed for. It does have just a couple of tiny flaws - Rain or Fog tends to weaken the intensity of the beam and heavy clothing, silver foil or even a dustbin lid (metal) can be used to deflect the beam from tingling someone. :rofl38: :rofl38: |

Re: Any ideas what this does?
I’m surprised that it took the Yanks so long to figure it out. When I was at HMS Collingwood (Navy electronics training school) back in the fifties the then latest anti-aircraft centimetric radar was installed to teach us about maintaining it. The aerial used to be kept in the rest position that is pointing horizontally but when switched on the 1 megawatt output swept the accommodation area and people often complained of feeling itchy. Eventually they had to point the aerial skywards. OK! Our system wouldn’t fit on a lorry, even a very big one but then we used valves and large components.
With modern miniaturisation and a huge power output the next step is in orbit. |
Re: Any ideas what this does?
