ok , I know a lot of folks complain about the BBC , but believe me just be grateful for what you have , here in California the lead item on tonights 11 p.m. NBC news was " What mothers are doing to avoid giving birth on 6, june 2006....6/6/06 (6/6/6) "........... the middle east is in turmoil , starvation in africa is rampant, corruption in government etc. etc and the lead story is about a group of mothers who are planing to having induced births to avoid giving birth to a little Damion on June 6th. ........I just give up , no wonder most of the world thinks Americans are dumb

As for the American 'mothers to be' well, absolute crackpots, putting the birth of your child at risk because of some stupid superstition !!!! Makes me angry:mad: Maybe, just as well though, 'cause if their baby is born on this day, they would always believe it to be the 'Child of the Devil' Nowt funnier than folk, is there ?

Although a fair proportion of yanks may be dumb, the same can certainly be said of this country. Go into any city or town centre late on a weekend night and you will see plenty of them!

Mr C, one of the most enjoyable nights out I've had was a "pub" crawl round the bars of Harlem to celebrate Mrs H's birthday. Very friendly, pleasant people and no hassle whatsoever (and some great music on the jukeboxes too!). And I've had the same sort of experience in Chicago, New Orleans and San Francisco. In contrast, I wouldn't even venture into central Manchester after midnight on Friday and Saturday nights now, as I value my life!

There is nowhere near as much mindless violence and wilful damage in town centres in America as there is in the UK. I used to live in Southport, nice quiet town, and even drove a taxi late at night as a part time job at one time. Now, I know taxi drivers who tell me the town centre is like a battleground any time after midnight any day of the week but especially, of course, Saturday and Sunday AM.

What you say is not quite true, JW....the battles usually start around 9pm sunday to thursday and from about 7.30pm friday and saturday. Next time you're over, let us know and we'll ensure you get a ringside seat.

The surprising thing about alot of all this nonsense is the extent to which many of these incidents are actually "domestics", i.e. drunken tartlet sees boyfriend eyeing up similar intoxicated slapper and decides to whack boyfriend over head with obligatory Bacardi Breezer bottle.

That is why, in this respect, the US is far more civilised than the old mother country. No airing of dirty linen in public there...simply a case of getting the boyfriend back home & then taking the magnum .44 from out under the bed & blowing his b*llocks off. (If he's lucky).

One thing I do think makes a difference is that the drinking age here in the US is 21 , How the Federal Govt. got away with this I dont know, since the legal age for voting, execution, and military service age is 18 (under 21's can drink on base), but the teenage drink/driving accident rate is a lot lower since the law went nationwide.
