Flag flying at Funeral Directors

Every night as I gratefully come home from work, I approach Clayton traffic lights and view the huge, wonderful, silk England flag flying gracefully in the breeze atop of L.Champ Funeral Director.

I cannot make my mind up how I feel about this.

This is obviously in celebration to the football, otherwise twud be The Union Jack.

Know the dead that lie beneath will have no concern for this adornment, however, can't help feeling a little incongruous and disrespectful or summat. Please help me sort out my thoughts on this one.

I hope its not an omen! perhaps the England fans lucky enough to get through the stringent border checks imposed on the English travelling to Germany are gonna dress up as undertakers..worth a try

Well, that's one explanation. tee hee.

Not being a footy fan, would not be very happy if I was lying in state there. They might even put up a Red flag whilst I was there too .. horror :D

Send me to the Co-op ... last wishes posted on here. Please forward to my family.

Re: Flag flying at Funeral Directors

I agree, when i saw it flying there i thought, yes it`s one thing for businesses to support England etc.. but.. it is a undertakers and hence by it`s nature a very solemn buisness, and if i was unfortunate enough to have relatives reposing there i would not feel very much like spurring the footie on, and might feel it was undermining my grief.
In my opinion, but i don`t expect everyone to agree with me, flag posts o funeral parlours should only be used appropiately, half mast etc figure head etc..

Why is flying the Flag for whatever reason disrespectful to the dead?

The person flying it obviously feels that he/she has something to be proud of, yes, the business of dealing with and preparing the dead for their final resting place is a sad one.
But surely flying the flag is in a way a celebration of continuing life!

If you support your nation and any of your nations teams' efforts why should you be barred from showing it? (no matter what your trade is).
I would think that if you actually asked at the undertakers they will probably be willing to explain why they display this flag with the obvious pride that they do, it is far better so far as I can see to have this patriotic fervour displayed in this manner than when I was a child some forty odd years ago where the only time our flag was ever flown was from a church steeple.
I hope that many, many other businesses, shops, communities etc will join in with this, not just for the football, (something I only watch rarely but I do enjoy the world cup hype), but for all things that we as a country can take pride in.

Of course Less I do sorta' agree with you on all points as with 'those were the days',. That is why I put up this thread to get opinions but still torn between the two, and thank you both for it. Just a matter of when I see it just turns my guts a little and find the image a little bizarre if not macabre.

After being in America for a while , thought how great they were at flying their flag and why we do not do it more often.

We all know though, that this is just to do with football and not the country, albeit, as you say, for whatever reason.

I can only hope that when the football is finished, they and all the people flying the England flag at the moment, will replace it with the Union Jack.

I'm sure that the dead do not care about whether there is a flag flying above the Funeral Home....it is only the living who become offended....and that is only because the flag has become synonymous with football and all that the game entails(drinking, fighting etc). I think Less is spot on about asking at the Funeral Home.........I'm sure they would not want to be seen to be giving offence. I don't mind it at all.

I've attended a couple of funerals from this undertakers. The lady that runs it, as well as her staff were nothing but kind, respectful and helpful.

I wouldn't take offence at having the English flag flapping in the breeze above it, nor at the church were the burials took place at Immanuel in Oswaldtwistle, which also flies both the flags of Union and St. George at various times.

Yes, she is a lovely lady Garinda indeed, only one thing I can't forgive her for. Sent my lovely mum there; she would always smile, but when I went to visit her they had pulled her mouth back a little too tight and she looked quite fierce which belied her living personality.

Ah well, gotta' laugh 'aint ya'

Not sure whether its appropriate for a funeral home but I know if I'd have seen it I wouldn't have given it a second thought and wouldn't be offended by it, the flag's everywhere at the moment, which is great, cant wait for the World Cup!

Why katex? the Scots are happy to display their flag as are the welsh, why is that being 'English' should be any different?

We fly the English flag all the time, not because we are footie fans, just we feel we are English having been born and bred here.

Re: Flag flying at Funeral Directors

I think it would be nice if people did fly the flag as Mitzy does, to be proud of England. Trouble is most people only hang it for football then take it back in again till next match.
I`m in no way saying that is a bad thing, it`s good to get behind your team and support them all the way, just be nice if the flag was seen in non match times too.

I noticed it had gone too, anybody know if anything had been said to the place itself or why they decided to take it down?

It must be very difficult for the embalmers to know how to set the facial expression as they never knew the person in life. My own mother looked nothing like herself either and it was difficult to believe it was actually her. My aunt on the other hand looked exactly like herself and so did a dear friend of ours who died just shortly before my first husband.
