Roll up, free driving lessons!

According to the Lancashire Evening Telegraph young Asian drivers are to be given free driving lessons because they are more at risk from accident because they drive too fast in souped up top of the range cars.

They will get lessons in cars or driving simulators depending on their ages. The young men will also be shown videos of car crashes and cut out of cars by the firebrigade to show them the dangers of driving too fast and not wearing seatbelts.

Surely we all know the risk of things we do. If these people are too stupid to realise the risks, are they not being rewarded with driving lessons that a lot of young people cannot afford?

garinda 05-06-2006 15:34

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Please don't accuse me of racism for starting this thread.

Surely the very fact that it is aimed solely at Asian youths is in its self racist?

Do white boy racers not die as well?

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

When the likes of the BNP read stories like this, they must rub their hands with glee. Do the do-gooders who devise these schemes not realise the damage they are causing to race relations?

I have put two teenagers through driving tests and its cost me a small fortune... I have more to put through.. The videos, simulators and free lessons sound good... But I cant let my teenagers have access to them because ?.... because ?

Without access to tonight's Telegraph and given the fact their website tells us nowt, could someone inform us as to who is supposed to be giving these free lessons? It cannot be a publicly funded authority, for surely in so doing it would be breaking the law.

From the LET-

'The project has been masterminded by The Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative, Blackburn North Healthy Living Centre and Capa Road Safety with help from the Fire Service, Police, drugs officers, Paramedics and tutors from BSM.'

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Surely is this initiative is receiving help from the emergency services it is indirectly funded from the public purse, and shouldn't be legally allowed because it bars anyone who isn't from a particular race?

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

It's costing a fortune for me to learn to drive and even though I'm an 'older learner' and female I would still love to have free lessons. I can't even get a friend or relative to take me out even now when I am only a few weeks away from taking my practical test & scoring 35/35 on the theory test 1st time!

Are they teaching them how to get insurance for these cars too ?

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Personally I think it is a disgustingly racist gesture, I can think of a dozen white kids of British origin who would be delighted to recieve the free lessons. I think if a person drives like an idiot he/she deserves the outcome wether it be a hefty fine, an endorsed licence, a loading on their insurance or whatever. If these drivers are stopped by the police when they are exceeding the speed limit or driving dangerously, and fined accordingly hitting them in the pocket and making them realise that it is their responsibility to act sensibly when they are on the road, then that is the way to cut down or prevent death or injury on the roads, not to throw money at the problem and hope it will go away. These do gooders really **s* me off.

jaysay 05-06-2006 17:49

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

One as to ask if these young racers have insuenace, to insure a small car for some one under 25 is anything up to £1000, so what does a souped up motar cost for these people irispective of clour or race, or have they even got insurance?

so how bad do you all feel about this? bad enough to post messages on accyweb or bad enough to get off your backsides and do soemhting about it?

moaning may be good for the soul (in reasonable amounts and for good reason) but it dont really get anything done now does it? :)

And what, my dear Kipax, would you suggest one does?

garinda 05-06-2006 23:02

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Yeah Kipax what are you suggesting?

Now the weathers better should we have a riot?

This initiative was apparently launched after two tragic accidents last year. In one a twenty four year old was driving a £50,000 Mercedes CLK 500 avant-garde super car at 70mph on a 60mph dual carriageway. In the other case another young man was found to be high on heroin and was driving at 100mph.

I didn't know wreckless and dangerous driving was limited to just one race. I'm just glad these idiots didn't kill any innocent people, only themselves.

Still at least their brothers get free driving lessons as a reward for their stupidity and arrogance.

my son has worked since leaving school . He is now having driving lessons which by the way he has to pay for . He has no soop up car which he drives around because he has not passed his test . Just go along blackburn road and see all the soop up cars ,parked on double yellow lines .do you need driving lessons to know were to park .or to have music blasting away through accrington town centre, or to parked out side the banks in accrington were it says no parking or has double yellow lines to to get more cash to keep these soop up cars on the road. Why not give the money to pensioners im sure they could find a better way of using it.Not being racists i do think they get a better deal.

entwisi 06-06-2006 06:37

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Those souped up cars you speak of are nothing but ordinary boring cars with extra plastic, big stereos and a loud backbox.

It actually makes me laugh to see all the extra weight these lads put on their cars which actually slows them down!

As for the subject of the original post, I think every child, irrespective of race colour, or creed, should be taught to drive during school. It is accepted that 90% of people will drive during their life so why not do it properly. Get some proper road sense in them early enough with an actual syllabus of what they will learn. As it is all you need to do is be able to perform half well for about 40 mins and thats it. People are left to their own devices to pick up the real driving experience.

I also personally feel that everyone should be retested every 5 years including a proper eyetest. That way some of the disgraceful standard of driving that I see every day may actually improve.

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

you want to go to blackburn college campus/ king georges hall in blackburn, they all do circles around there all day

like someone has said how it baffles them that a 24 year old can afford a 50k car

these lads around the college drive bmw, porshe 4x4 which cost just as much but even more in insurance and petrol, and these lads are my age, 19/20 year old.

yet all i can afford is a motorbike that does 75mph at absolute tops.

i cant afford driving lessons, and it annoys me that because of my race i am pegged back a step

hey i just got the impression you where all upset and suggested something could be done other than moan on a messageboard.. just look at your reactions.. your all so scared of your own shadows you have little pops at me rather than any enthusiasm to actually do anything :(

i suggested soemthing could be done other than moan.. i wasnt suggesting what could be done.. just the concept that somehting could be done.... it would ahve been nice to at least try and make a difference.. to at least try and right a wrong... no lets pick on anyone daft enough to suggest we do.. thats the accyweb way isnt it..

garinda your partly right.. thats not what messageboards are for... but it seems to be what accyweb is for.. and thats dissapointing. but you will no doubt have some witty response to that wont you.. or some sexual inuendo... anything but a positive response..

oh well... a missed opportunity IMHO. never mind eh.. onwards and downwards eh :)

I dont think thats the problem how they can afford.. not really any of our business... but people then giving them free lessons when they can obviously afford to pay and only if your asian.. that is a problem..

entwisi 06-06-2006 09:14

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Just because they are driving them doesn't mean they can afford them. Who knows how much they owe in loans etc? If you went out and borrowed £20K you too could be driving round in a very nice car. Some of these lads also hire them for weekends etc

Think of it this way,
Group of 4 friends, you are only responsible for 52/4 = 13 weekends a year(lets assume you are happy to walk/use buses during the week for those mundane journeys). You can hire a Ferrari from about £300 a day so for about £5K/year you and your mates can be driving round in a ferrari at weekends, posing to all the girlies. BMWs and the like are even cheaper.

what game? it was a serious post.. anyway like i say.. . the response wasn't yes lets do something about it .. your more intent on seeing somehting that isnt there.. a bit sad that really.. missed opportunity to do soemthing about a situation because having a pop or seeing some sort of game is more important to you... oh well ..

may as well leave it at that.. keep to moaning.. maybe one day that will make the world a better place eh... much less hassle than doing somehting :)

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

Surely all this misses the point. The cops should not be involved in any of these silly little schemes involving the usual waste of taxpayers money; they should be out there, stopping these boy racers - irrespective of their ethnic background - arresting them, bringing them before the courts and then either withdrawing their license or jailing 'em. Or both. And confiscating their motors for good measure.

Your first post in this thread could be seen as a bit of a moan, just like you accused the rest of us doing before suggesting we do something more positive about it....but came up with no sensible ideas when asked.

I hope this reply isn't too clever or full of sexual innuedo for you.

I like this bit in that story
Quote:

The course has specifically targeted Blackburn's Bastwell ward, where there is a high ethnic minority population
Does that not make them an ethnic majority?

And this bit
Quote:

Mr Congress' family have already called for crash barriers and speed cameras to be placed on the road a dual carriageway which has a speed limit of 60mph.
I have never seen 60mph signs on that road, it is national speed limit.

Well done LET for another good story ;)

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

I have no concerns with drivers going fast on quite motorways etc (although the police might :p) but many of these 'suped up' (aka added plastic and stuff to make it SOUND like they have a big engine)... they tend to go fast in built up areas where there are many pedestrians which is dangerous for other people not just themsleves..

Rewarding people for driving unsafely by giving driving tests which would cost safe drivers an arm and a leg, is stupid. The fact that on this occasion its limited to one race, is moronic.

Re: Roll up, free driving lessons!

We all like at good moan at each other about anything that displeases us, but how many people actually do anything about the topic being moaned about? Very few because we are all waiting for someone else to do it.

It’s one thing having a good moan on this forum but quite another to take the time and trouble to write to your MP or Councillor, or police etc. Has anyone written to United Utilities about the proposal to put fluoride in the water? It is still on the agenda. It’s not just this forum but others as well. We all love a good moan but when it comes to standing up and being counted most people sit down and turn away.

However there has been one good point raised in this thread. I think that it would be a great idea to teach The Highway Code to school kids in their final year and make them take the same test that is now part of the driving test. I don’t think that giving them driving lessons would be practical though.
