Re: Med or Atlantic? St. Paul's Bay, Malta actually
They've got quite a lot of new(ish) buses in recent years but there are still plenty around with underseat ventilation (i.e.you can see the road through the holes in the floor). They still all have a picture of Jesus or Mary at the front up above the driver, they often used to have one or two of Elvis as well but I haven't seen that for a while.
I admire the Maltese bus drivers. The skill involved in swinging round those tight corners and (usually) missing the parked cars/other buses by half an inch is awesome. I also admire the ingenuity of a few of them, like last year when stuck in a traffic jam next to Sliema yacht marina, our bus driver got fed up and nipped off up a side street (it was one way, not our way, but who cares?), round several more small, narrow streets and beat a dozen other buses into Valletta bus station. :D I adore Malta, which is why I go so often. I love the place and I love the people. I also go alone quite often and I feel so safe there, I can go out at night on my own without worrying about my security, which is more than I'd care to do here. :) |

Sliema yacht marina eh? My how things have changed.
We often parked our ship HMS Alamein up Sliema creek and anchored mid stream for a quiet evening out at the Blue Circle bar a mere dghaisa ride away. We would come in front end first and somehow the skipper managed to turn it round on a sixpence before tying up to a buoy fore and aft. A game of darts with the locals was the highlight of the evening. After which getting into a dghaisa, whilst drunk was quite tricky as was getting out and back on board. |

Just a few yachts in Valletta harbour. You should see them at the marina, packed so tight I don't know how they ever get them out. :D |
Re: Med or Atlantic? St. Paul's Bay, Malta actually
I was warned on my first visit - In England we drive on the left, on the Continent they drive on the right - in Malta, they drive in the shade!!
