Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
Aye, well it will be if some trendy vicars get their way. On the basis that St. George was not English (or indeed, if he ever existed), these slimey toads are proposing that the Patron Saint should be changed to St Alban, a fourth-century "English" Christian done in by the Romans.
Of course, the colours of the flag would have to change, to a diagonal yellow cross on a blue background, which is the other reason for the change - that the St George's (crusader) cross is offensive to muslims. Well, it may well be offensive to a few, but it didn't appear to offend all the muslim men & women I saw driving round the last few weeks with the flag flying from their motors. No wonder the C of E is in the state that it is in. Would you turn up for a church service held by one of the patronising clowns proposing this nonsense? But don't laugh...twenty years ago we laughed at the idea of female vicars...and look where we are now. |

Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
I don't see the point.
It is not entirely factual that Jesus Christ existed; but the whole of Christianity aren't going to substitute the crucifix for a smiley picture of Donny Osmond are they? |
Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
Donny Osmond nailed to a cross.... now theres a thought..
I dont know wether to sing... allways look on the bright side... or puppy love... |
Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
Hang on a mo. Isn't it supposed to be the connotations (sp?) of the St George cross that allegedly upsets muslims (not that I know any muslims who actualy object to its existence) - not just the Crusades but the fact that it's a Christian symbol and that the country has a Christian symbol as it's flag? So where is the logic of replacing one Christian symbol with another Christian symbol? It's still going to be non-muslim isn't it? St George, St Alban or St anybody-you-fancy is still going to be a Christian saint and therefore non muslim. A sky blue pink cross with yellow spotted background wowuld still be a Christian symbol if it represented a saint and would therefore still have objectionable connections surely? It's like changeing an army uniform and then claiming it isn't the same army.
Silly idea. |
Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
It is more than silly; it is based upon crackpot idealism combined with total ignorance of history; and history tells us that such a recipe leads ony to disaster.
The evidence is that St Alban probably existed, sometime in 4th century AD and was therefore a citizen of Roman Britannica, thus probably a Celt; the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria, Mercia & Wessex were not to emerge for a couple of hundred years and from them the nation of England only under Alfred in the 9th Century. In fact, the first guy to make a stab at uniting the disparate kingdoms in the 7th century AD was our dear old Oswald of Northumbria. I do not have a clue what his colours were, but his first camp on his quest south into Mercia was Church .A few months later he was chopped to bits. Literally. Maybe if we are to have a new English saint, why not him; and if a new flag why not one with a white background with a piccy of Church Kirk tower? |
Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
It is just another pandering attempt to lay down English patriotism, to allay the non-sensical whimsy that Muslims object to our heritage. Like you Tealeaf, i saw many of the cars driven by asians...who I suppose could be muslim, sporting this flag! So the flag is OK if it is to support football, but NOT OK if it is to show patriotic spirit. The Church of England doesn't know if it is coming or going.

Now we're getting somewhere! Let's have Oswald as our patron saint, Church as the new capital of England and convert the old canal warehouses and Commercial Hotel into the new Houses of Parliament. HRH can have freedom of the Borough as long as she promises to stay down in London and not get under our feet. |

Utter bollocks, although I have little doubt that the day will come when the Flag of Union will be replaced by that bloody rainbow effort so beloved of the floral types. If the indigenous ethnic peoples of this land don’t get there act together we’ll all be ****ed. You don’t hear the Scots or the Taff’s capitulating to the demands of idiots. |
Re: Cry God for Harry, England & Saint Alban....
Brilliant shot, Mr K, which shows just why we're going to miss your Stanley shots so much and succinctly illustrates the absurdity of the whole situation - if THEY don't object, why should a bunch of meddling parsons?
Incidentally, I don't think this change will ever come to pass, but I'll bet you that within 20 years, the Union Flag will have been swept away, replaced by the starred flag of the United States of Europe. |
