Where can you buy diodes nowadays? god I miss Tandy at times

Re: Diodes?

Diodes?, There is an electronics shop in Burnley on Standish Street, or a bit further away, Victor Wright Electronics on The Rock in Bury, and of course if you fancy mail order there is always the Maplin catalogue.

Re: Diodes?

Re: Diodes?

What are diodes? (Sorry but you learn nothing unless you ask)

Ernie 04-07-2006 16:50

Re: Diodes?

Well Tinks a diode is a component on a circuit board that allows electricity to flow through it one way but not the other, like a one way valve in a water pipe. They are usually used in hi-fi equipment and radio and television and they come in various sizes dependant on what they are being used for, the larger ones are normally used in rectifiers and the smaller ones are used in low current devices. (A rectifier converts A/C alternating current to D/C direct current).

CPC at preston
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/home/homepage.jsp
crap for computers but I'm sure they can manage diodes. They've got a public counter at the wharehouse in preston though.
Maplins are slowly taking tandy's place. They open more out of town shops each year. I noticed yesterday that they've opened a new one in stockport.

Neil 04-07-2006 20:36

Re: Diodes?

There is a Maplin in Preston but CPC is easier to get to. Only 2 mins from M6 Junction 31A just past Asda. It is not a public counter it is a trade counter but they will serve anyone. Its very annoying for us account customers to have to wait while some bloke ask if they have such a thing while waving it at the person serving

Madhatter 04-07-2006 20:46

Re: Diodes?

Ye ok, it says it says trade counter on the catalogue(I get my catalogue free, but if you don't spend enough in a year you have to pay), but they serve everyone without question, it's like argos with catalogues on a counter.
Yes It can be annoying, they take long enough to serve as it is, it does my head in neil. And it doesn't matter what I seem to do I can't get this damn computer sorted and my account credited. All I want is a working pc.

Re: Diodes?

I used to get my components from pv tubes accy but they have gone now… Pity .

Have you got the diode type number? I have a draw full. It may cost you more for package and postage than what it would cost for the component and what’s it out of?

Re: Diodes?

What is the application for which you need some diodes?

If it's power diodes you are in need of, Harmsworth & Townley of Todmorden has probably the best ex-stock selection in the country.
I've used rectifiers from these people for 20 years now.

I hope this helps. :)

Re: Diodes?

more phone calls to cpc, three or four I can't remember. They cut me off several times. got passed to customer services from accounts, to be transferred straight back again. Wasn't untill I tried to order another pc and a repair technician got involved that someone from accounts started wwriting down figures that I claim I owe. I'm claiming the 115 refund that they gave me as compensation as they refunded it under that description.
I think I'm owed it, 7 months 5 pc's, including one being one of the previous ones that i'd returned as faulty, the phone calls, paying someone to be in the office when they call. Then losing the last pc that only went for repair that had my extra hard drive in and personal data.
I just want a working pc.
Thanks to whoever put the guide to avoiding o870 numbers in the tech section too. Thats saved me a load.

entwisi 11-07-2006 04:56

Re: Diodes?

You will probably find that yours is a different CPC. There is one that sells computers, this one has been round for years and As far as I know doesn't.

Neil 11-07-2006 05:10

Re: Diodes?

Sounds like the same place in Preston to me Ian. They sell electrical spares, IT stuff, white goods spares ( replacement washing machine support spider and drum bearings cost me < £21 last week. The repair shops in Ossy/Accy wanted £35.) and other stuff

entwisi 11-07-2006 06:38

Re: Diodes?

yep, IIRC the other CPC is out sheffield way.

You could have told me you were going! :D

Cheers mate for those, I'll fit them at the weekend

Madhatter 11-07-2006 22:24

Re: Diodes?

Someone else said something about an electronics store at sheffield.

No this cpc is preston.
Customer services rang metoday. Admitted that My account should be 41quid in credit without the pc.
they are Insisting that I sent the last pc back as unsuitable and when they checked it it wasn't faulty (which is a lie), so therefore I was charged a restoking fee.
The compensation that I recieved of 115 quid is a refund of that restoking fee and loss of the hard drive that I left in it. It was only sent for repair, so therfore You wouldn't take it out would you. Also why would I send a pc back as unsuitable then order the exact same pc.
Faults on it were, ie keeps needing to close, pc keeps resetting, feet are missing, memory card reader doesn't work, remote doesn't work, keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work, case is scratched.
This is the same pc minus my hard drive. It was sent back for repair was restocked instead of being repaired after I'd used it for three months, then sent out to me as a reconditioned return in working order. I want to know how many it's been out too over the last year, how many times do these pc's go out, considering that this is the fourth delivery.
Anyway, even though I get 115 compensation, cpc get the compensation because once I get a working pc I'll still owe the full cost minus what my account was in credit.
Thats 7 months being messed about 5 compouters. if this next one works, numerous phone calls, paying someone to be in to recieve/have collected.
Do you think I'm entitled to compensation. should I stick with it or just send it back, demand a refund of the amount my acount was in credit and go else where ?

entwisi 12-07-2006 06:39

Re: Diodes?

If it really has been such that not one of 5 PCs has been fit for purpose(and I do mean you to think honestly if it was the PC or possibly something you did , installing software that messed it up) then you have protection under the Sale of Goods Act. I would be winging my way to trading standards right now.(actually I wouldn't because I would have sorted it before this long but hey, thats me)

Madhatter 12-07-2006 15:35

Re: Diodes?

Bet you wouldn't entiwisi, n if your so sure give me tips, because I just get transfered, tranfered, transfered, or cut off, or promises of someone ringing us back. cpc call centre, accounts and customer services are an absolute joke. Becuase she put the phone down when I asked to speak to the manager I don't know if they're sending a new now or collecting this heap of scrap.
It's the pc's because I haven't installed any software, it won't let me, says a cabinet file is corrupt.
I'm tempted to go trading standards because having the pc is the only way of getting something back for all the phone calls, dozens of them to 0870 numbers, but also it's quite obvious that if anything does go wrong in the future and I return it, I risk it being restocked and charged for the privalage of losing my pc.

Madhatter 12-07-2006 15:36

Re: Diodes?

where would YOU buy a pc from if you wanted an off the shelf one at a reasonable price.

entwisi 12-07-2006 19:35

Re: Diodes?

laptop, I would buy an Acer,( As I have twice )shopacer.co.uk, sometimes even Comet have some cracking deals on them

Desktop, Dell are OK, there are loads of others I would happily use, I'd even be prepared to goto PC World if necessary.

Madhatter 12-07-2006 19:42

Re: Diodes?

the person I bought it for wanted a dell but I thought they were expensive, they're double the price of this one for the same spec, but I'm thinking now that it may be worth it .
